One of the coolest things about those old revolvers is that the cylinder is removable. So when they needed to reload they would just remove the cylinder and replace it with one that was pre loaded before the battle. An officer would typically have 4or 5 pre loaded cylinders in their cartridge pouch and then their sword for close engagement.

The Remington 1861 "Old Model" revolver cylinder is easier to remove than the Colt's. Also, they tended to carry more than 1 gun in order to avoid the long reload.

founding fathers didnt intend for muskets to be used forever, they fully knew that firearm technology would advance, the already had a deck mounted gun that could fire roughly 60 rounds a minute so long as you had someone pushing the next round in fast enough. also, multi barrel muskets can be considered automatic becuase you can fire more then 1 round per trigger pull. and yes, YOU CAN OWN A CANNON, privateers were a thing, they had their own boats, they asked if they could have cannons to defend their cargo, and the founders said "go fucking nuts"

The reason is because of gun laws themselves. Those revolvers are made in the traditional pre 1899 style. Before smokeless powder was made. All guns and rifles were black powder. So they are considered as antique firearms. Even though they don’t have modern firearms features. You can look at the date of the guns manufactured and that would determine whether it requires a background check or not. A German Mauser made in 1898 is legally not a firearm. While another that was made in 1899, is considered a modern firearm.

It was common for soldiers to get 4 shots a minute off with a percussion gun common early on in the Civil War. Flintlock muskets used before that could be loaded about 3 rounds a minute. They would have 3 or 4 rows of a hundred soldiers. The first rank would fire and step back to reload while the second row fired, stepped back to reload, third row, etc. What sped the process up was the use of preloaded paper cartridges. They would tear the cartridge with their fingers, pour in the powder, drop in the bullet, ram it tight in place, load a cap on the nipple, cock the hammer, "aim", and fire. A lot of soldiers were more concerned about getting their gun loaded and fired in the general direction of the enemy. With 400 guys lined up 80-100 yards away and however many more hanging around behind them, you were sure to hit someone, even with a smoothbore musket. I was demonstrating a smoothbore Brown Bess musket to some 4H kids on a blackpowder team. They had only fired modern blackpowder guns, but they were still able to hit the general area of a target 100 yards away on the first shot. Yes, you can hit a reasonable target at 100 yards with a smoothbore musket if you practice and know your gun. A friend's wife had never shot anything more than a .22 and was able to hit our target dead center with my friend's smoothbore French replica musket. The bullets they were shooting during the Civil War were .69" and .58" in diameter and were lethal out to more than 500 yards. Sharpshooters were able to use their rifles to make called shots to their targets' eyeballs out to 450 yards.

From the late 1850's until the early 1900's, cap and ball revolvers were actually loaded with what they called "combustible" cartridges. They were treated paper sleeves with the powder charge poured in and a bullet glued on. You would slide the whole package into the front of the cylinder and use the rammer to force it into place. A lot of companies sold the guns at a loss so they could make more profit selling the preloaded cartridges, much like razor blade companies sell razor handles so they can sell the blades. The cartridge boxes often had a small packet with 6 or 7 caps. Cavalry would often have 2 to 4 or more pistols in holsters on their side, chest, and saddle. They would charge close to the enemy (about 50 yards), fire into the mass of troops, wheel around to a safe distance, then charge in from another direction, emptying another gun into the enemy troops and repeat until they had emptied all their guns or the enemies got suckered into trying to chase them down, where they were ambushed by another group of soldiers in hiding. When they came back to camp, they would dip their guns and swish them around in a pot of hot water by the fire to clean out the fouling, then they would take them apart to dry them, oil them, and reload with their paper cartridges. That's how you clean blackpowder guns, with water and patches until the extremely corrosive fouling is gone. If a British soldier allowed their guns to have a spot of rust, they would be flogged, they were serious about the King's or Queen's property.

A very similar reason is why Black Powder revolvers are basically the only option for many people who want to own a gun but don't want to/can't go through the mess that is applying for a permit in my home country, Poland. Our gun control laws are a disgusting mess written by actual communists- literal communists that sent tanks and riot police armed with full auto AK's against people protesting silly things like starving bc there are food shortages or absolute lack of free speech and one party system... The only gun you can own without purposefully hard and expensive to obtain permits is a black powder historic piece (or replica of said piece) that isn't modified to accept modern integrated cartridge ammunition, along with a few other requirements. The hilarious part is that you don't need to register it anywhere, you don't need no permit, you can walk right into a gun shop and buy it over the counter or ONLINE like a toy. The only thing that is slightly harder to obtain is the actual powder- theoretically you need European Firearms Pass which is just a formality, but funnily enough there are no laws that state you can't give Black Powder as a gift, so a lot of people do "mutual gifts" (you give me black powder and I give you money that just happens to be what you paid for the powder plus a couple beers). The amount of violent crime with black powder guns? Zero. Zilch. None. There were robberies and such with illegally obtained modern firearms, but not a single one in 30 years with a black powder gun, even though it's a perfectly functional firearm.

it's still a firearm, it's regulated as a firearm, but since it is legally considered a "primitive" firearm (essentially, the powder, primer bullet are loaded separate), it is not regulated the same way a post 1898 firearm would be (even back in 1934, you can see the way the gun-grabbers/statists thought). Many states extend firearm restrictions to these as well, just because an FFL isn't legally allowed to run a NICS check for them, doesn't mean you are legally allowed to purchase them if you are otherwise under disability... buy/carry at your own risk.

The ATF considers muzzleloading firearms to be antique regardless of the age of the design or the date of manufacture. So it holds as true for modern "inline" muzzleloaders that use 209 primers as it does for actual 200-year-old antiques. And apparently the regulation pertaining to antiques exempts them from the requirement to pass a NICS background check or file a Form 4473. So yeah, it's a national thing unless state or local laws supercede it. The only exception to this is muzzleloaders based on existing "modern" firearms, like the Remington 700ML. Because their action is based on an extant firearm that requires a 4473 and background check, the muzzleloader variant also requires a 4473 and background check. It's honestly the same kind of screwy regulatory shenanigans that lead the ATF to require a 4473 only for the lower receiver of an AR and not the rest of the firearm.

On the federal level, blackpowder guns aren't considered firearms and any gun made before 1899 that can't chamber a commercially loaded cartridge is considered an "antique" and is not considered a firearm. If the gun is converted to shoot a commercially loaded cartridge, it IS a firearm and all the laws apply to it. A lot of 1800's muskets were converted to fire cartridges or even shotgun shells, like the trapdoor Springfield. They took a Civil War era rifle and modified it to shoot the .45-70 cartridge. Even though they were made and converted before 1899, they can fire .45-70 cartridges, which can be bought at stores, so they're a firearm. The British Enfield rifle muskets from the same time period were converted to shoot a .58 caliber cartridge, but there are very few companies who make it, it's a "boutique" round, so it's not considered commercially available. You can order a blackpowder gun or antique gun online or from a catalog and have it shipped to your house but... A lot of states DO consider blackpowder guns as firearms or dangerous weapons, making them illegal for ex-cons and other prohibited people to possess. Those states regulate them the same way as regular firearms with background checks and you have to have them shipped to a licensed gun dealer, not to your home. Certain states also prohibit people from ordering black powder or black powder balls and bullets, they have to buy them at a licensed gun dealer.

imagine being in a shootout and needing to reload. thats probably why its not considered a firearm, cuz of how long and tedious reloading is.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but in the CivilWar i think only some officers used the blackpowder revolver (the one in the video) and even then only some officers used it.

By the time of the Civil War I think you'd be hard pressed to find officers who would still use single-shot pistols.

Personally I think all weapons should be able to be bought without checks. A lot of the things that can remove your rights shouldn't actually do so and the others that remove your rights rightfully should probably keep you in prison.

Regarding the difficulty of muzzle-loading a rifle in combat, there were shortcuts most militaries developed to speed up and simplify the process. One was to load powder, a wad and a bullet into a greased paper "cartridge". You bit off the back end, dumped the powder down the barrel, rammed the wrapping and bullet down on top of the powder, placed a percussion cap and fired about three shots per minute. This was a good system but actually led to a major revolt among native troops in British India in 1857, since Hindus wouldn't bite a bullet greased with beef fat and Muslims wouldn't bite one greased with pork fat, and the British commander in charge was not "going to humour their beastly prejudices". Meanwhile the Prussian army inherited by Frederick the Great was drilled to fire five or six aimed shots per minute in combat, assisted by an iron ramrod that could not break under hard use.. By 18th century standards this was like facing machine guns. As for getting one shipped to California by mail, it isn't classified as a firearm until loaded and primed. In an unloaded and inert state it is a curio or relic and can be shipped right to your door without a background check. Actually carrying one, or even owning one as a prohibited person, is still subject to the usual California firearm laws. You won't see anyone walking the streets with a Navy Colt on their hip.

The British army by the Revolution used .69 caliber balls in .75 caliber Brown Bess muskets. They dispensed with the ramrod and wad and just poured the charge down the barrel, dropped the ball in, and slammed the stock on the ground to settle the ball, the primed the pan as they raised the musket and fired it in the general direction of the enemy, following which they repeated the process. Absolutely NO accuracy, but rate of fire was the Holy Grail. Keeping a wall of lead between them and the enemy was the point. A well trained soldier could get out three shots a minute. Hitting anything was strictly accidental. Dropped balls were a big problem, getting the ball down the barrel with shot whistling by your ears was a bit nerve racking, and you didn't want to bend down to pick it up so just grabbed another. At the Bennington Battlefield they have been able to precisely locate the lines in the last couple of years by the lines of dropped balls left there after the battle. They have also been able to determine which hit someone using luminol!

Brandon is dead wrong!! It doesn’t have to be black powder!!! It doesn’t have to be based on a pre 1899 design!!! Modern made muzzleloaders of origin design are antiques!!. It’s all about the ignition system (matchlock flintlock caplock or literally anything but centerfire or rimfire).

Laws regarding _[Topic X],_ written by people wo know precisely *nothing* about _[Topic X]_ will always result in unintelligibly stupid laws regarding _[Topic X]._ This is as reliable a rule as any other universal constant. This rule doesn't *just* apply to Firearms as [Topic X], it applies to any subject you can think of. Firearms just seems to be one of the more egregious potential [Topic X] examples one can bring up due to 1) the extreme levels of ignorance and incompetence involved as well as 2) how absurdly easy it is to *display* the almost impressive combination of ignorance and incompetence involved.

Yep. MOST laws written today aren't even written by the "lawmakers", they are written by lobbyists and passed without the "lawmakers" even reading them. As such, their primary objective is to institute new taxes and fees, and enable politicians and corporations to get taxpayer money.

You just reminded me of the most important advantage of the AK type over the AR-15 family, for the grunt - steal case ammunition, you can use a magnet to pick up cases on the range, AR uses brass non magnetic brass. And before some hippie calls me on " brass 7.62*39/ steal case 5.56...." I am speaking about the ammo that you get from the army... No brass for AK, No steal case 5,56 which will not run in a m4 anyway but...

No, that's something else again. Curio & Relic classed firearms are still firearms and still covered by the NFA and GCA. Cap and Ball revolvers are not classed as firearms at all, and therefore _not_ covered by the NFA.
