I discoverd your channel today. And I am really happy to finaly find some advice on how to bond with my canary! I rescued him 3 years ago, during winter, and I am a total newbie about birds. I found books on how to take care for canaries and I met a vet for him, to check up his health. But it's hard to find tips on how they behave and comunicate. I let him fly in the house sometimes. He didnt go outside every time, I think I made mistakes here, as I make him move when he his on top of books for exemples, because we dont want him to poop on them. Need to find how to make my house birdproof to let him fly outside more. Thank you for you videos!

Lovely to hear from you again! 🎶 Happy New Year, Signore Leporello! Alas, 2020 was a tricky year health-wise for a number of us. I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in June! 😨 Thankfully, my neurosurgeon removed it completely, and I feel better than I have in years. I can still play my violin! Please do not feel obligated to post videos if you’re busy. We’re just happy you’re well, and the new apartment looks wonderful! I continue to have many bird-related questions with which to inundate you! 😏 Hugs :)
@leporellothegoldfinch4 жыл бұрын
Oh my God, I'm very sorry to hear you've had to go through this, and I am so happy that everything went well! Glad you can still play the violin, I am sure it would have been a loss to humanity if you couldn't! How is Punkitititi? Looking forward to your questions, always a pleasure to hear from you :)
@icy_icenhour4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your words of kindness and concern! I have so many stories- I couldn’t see or even walk immediately following surgery, but it all came back, and now I’m even able to practice the Korngold Concerto- my absolute favorite piece for the violin! The brain is a remarkable thing. My silly bird boy is beautiful and doing well. He’s quite the conversationalist! Unfortunately, he simply doesn’t seem to enjoy his time outside his cage, and he’s had years to acclimate at this point. I even covered the windows with paper to block his view outside. No more than ten minutes outside and he races to press himself against the windowpane, and fluffs out his feathers in stress. I simply don’t understand. He’s a different bird in his cage: confident, assured, curious, even comical. I hate to confine him to his cage, but it seems to be what he prefers... I suspect it’s an innate personality trait from his breeder’s stock, but otherwise I am stumped!
@leporellothegoldfinch4 жыл бұрын
@@icy_icenhour That sounds like an ordeal which I cannot even imagine. Respect to you for getting through all this! The Korngold is wonderful, I hope it will bring you great joy! The classical music business can be merciless, and it's nice to have these oases of pieces one loves to play. I'm quite confused with Punkitititi's behaviour as well, to be honest. Is he as stressed when he is in the cage, yet able to see outside the window? If he's racing to the window to communicate with the birds outside, he might just be lonely - in this case he is likely to mellow out if another bird were to be introduced. Just a thought. Or maybe an avian vet could be consulted during one of his checkups?

I am so glad you and handsome Leporello are back!! I've been binging your videos recently; I found you through your molting tips video, since my husband got a male European Goldfinch from a pet store in New York City a couple of months ago. Our bird has a lower left leg problem (now named Dr. House), and only eats very few kinds of seeds, but otherwise, not so bad picking up from a pet store this time, I'm not sure where else I could get European Goldfinches in the US though. Our goldfinch thankfully started molting after giving him liquid Calcium Plus and Iodine (Morning Bird brand) he's probably almost halfway through now. The liquid vitamins have been helping his leg quite a bit, he can rest on it now, when he couldn't before. My husband insists we keep his cage in a box (with part of it open) until his feathers fall and grow back, and insists that our bird is sensitive to light while molting. My husband had already tried to put him in a closet (with the door open) to help Dr. House molt, but he only started molting after providing him liquid vitamins since he's an extremely picky eater. I feel terrible keeping our goldfinch in the box, so I keep him out, in a place he feels comfortable, whenever I can. Your tips have really helped me bond with him, he plays when he's around me and out of the box/closet, and he's started crunching his beak! He only makes sounds preparing to sing, but hasn't sung yet, and doesn't make sounds like yours or at least, I haven't heard them yet. Sorry for the long comment, I just mean to say that your advice helped so much that our goldfinch enjoys being around me now; he stops playing when I have to stop being close to him or if I'm not looking at my phone or something else for too long, he'll stare at me until I return my gaze to him. I'm trying to tame him more, he doesn't like being out of his cage, and I'd never pressure him about it, but I've been able to get much closer to him than the beginning thanks to your extremely valuable advice! Danke schön für deine harte Arbeit und Einblicke! 🙏🏼💎💙
@leporellothegoldfinch4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your lovely words, and good job taking the bird out of the box. During the winter months, birds need more light, not less - in the form of artificial lighting, that is. There are specialised bird lamps which do not flicker, and it's a good idea to have such a lamp on top of the cage, hooked to an automated timer. Six or seven hours a day should do the trick - ten to twelve in the summer months, with a transitionary period in between. If you roughly go by sunrise/sunset times, you're doing a great job. Good lighting will ensure your feathered friend will moult at the right time next year. That said, Leporello just finished moulting himself - so maybe it's just been a crazy year!

I forgot I was subscribed to you! I had been looking into getting a finch of some sort, but guess what I ended up with... A PIGEON! I was really torn between the two because even though their care is very different, I really liked different aspects of both of these birds. I ended up choosing a pigeon because they supposedly bond a little more readily to humans since they have been domesticated for a very long time. I was also worried about getting a smaller bird because I thought they might be more fragile as well. I was about to unsubscribe since I really dont need finch information anymore, but then I remembered how much I love Leporello and watching you interact with him. So I think ill stick around!! (If you were interested in seeing any clips of my pigeon, ive posted a few on my channel, im not a youtuber but I collect videos of my pets there to send to friends lol)

Lovely question! I'm afraid to say most of what I know comes down to 20+ years of experience. But I really love reading old birdkeeping instructions from the 18th and 19th century, which are now mostly available in digital form on Google Books. Birds were a major source of entertainment in that period, and there's some great stories - e.g. about goldfinches that were trained to play fetch, pull little carts, and even to fire tiny cannons. But I digress... the internet can be a great resource. I'd just advise to avoid general pet sites (they often have no clue and post poor, even misinformed articles to get clicks) and to consult sites made by long-standing bird breeders.

Good idea. Unfortunately there is not much you can do to avoid touching your bird when administering flea (or as I rather suspect, mite) infestation, short of scattering diatomaceous earth in the cage and on the perches. A trip to the vet will still be necessary. Gouldians are highly sociable animals and must be kept at least in a pair. They will never get tame if kept alone, because they will be constantly stressed and afraid of everything.

You're quite right, you should never grab your bird - he will never get tame if you keep doing that! Birds remember your voice and even smell, so he will know it is you even if you turn off the light. Instead, only feed him in the cage, and give yourself + your canary a time window (!) rather than a fixed time until when he needs to go back. Birds tend to go back into their cages at least once every 30 minutes if you're not feeding/watering them outside, so just be patient. If your canary doesn't go back no matter what, he is not comfortable with his surroundings, and you should definitely start at the very beginning of the bird-taming playlist!

@incanusolorin26074 жыл бұрын
He didn’t fly away because he was unhappy. Maybe he was, but that’s not the point. He flew away because you were careless and didn’t close the windows before letting him out of the cage. Perfectly happy birds will also fly away just to check out the outside or because something spooked them, and will get lost and never be able to find their way back in. You must either train your birds to free fly outdoors or keep them inside with doors and windows closed at all times.
