Today I go under the truck to see why it won’t drive. We find the problem which is a cracked trans pan. Sadly it’s a bigger project than I thought!

I worked at Stewart and Stevenson - Armor Holding's - BAE Systems for 12 1/2 years in Sealy, Texas where the truck was built from ground up !! I was in sand/shot blast !! E-Coat 1 I was there to have a hand in building the first 10 thousand plus truck that rolled off the line !! Those trucks were Awesome at The Time !! The (carc) paint tan and or green , Black and brown was a unique paint !! 👍👍👍

I can guarantee there's a government manual somewhere that says you have to pull back the drive shaft before pulling out that pan. The government allows such known factors in maintenance. On the F-16, it takes around 48 hours to pull an engine out, roll it back to inspect it, then reinstall it. A team of 8 can do it. You're working solo on a truck. You're probably meant to have help with a lot of those things.

I used to write service manuals for the military (it’s subcontracted to other companies) and I was working on an update to this type of vehicle which was being made by a new manufacturer. Anyways, the military style of repair is to not do this in the truck. If you broke the pan, you should actually remove the transmission from the truck prior to doing any repairs. They would have never sanctioned this kind of repair in the field. And this specific issue is an Allison transmission design issue. I’m sure it’s meant to remove the T-case from the trans before pulling the pan.

You are probably right. Lifting the body 8 inches onto jack stands should do it.

That's the first thing I thought when watching this vid. Also, seems just pulling the center "X" piece of the U joint would allow clearance enough. Or positioning the truck so the driveshaft rotates enough so the bolt misses the ends of the the driveshaft?

there is a master switch in the cab left side lower kick panel to cut out the main ignition switches on the dash. Second trans fluid is the the same oil in engine which is 15w-40w diesel oil. Caterpillar engine depends what year but range from250 HP up to 350 HP. If you send me your engine serial number i can look it up.

I work for S&S and we get these in the shop from time to time. Most of the time the owner had just bought it from auction and has LOTS of issues. Some cost more to fix than they paid for it. They're tough little trucks but sitting for God knows how long, under God knows whose care, in God only knows what conditions tends to really take its toll on em.

The Allison engineers are fine- the problem is with the people who designed the chassis. Typical problem when different groups of engineers don't talk to each other. If you think the pan would come out without those couple bolts then cut them off and replace them with shorter studs.

i love when people are looking at a beautiful machine, a marvel of engineering. Engineering because engineers designed every single aspect of it. Tolerances, reliability requirements, thermal challenges, fluid dynamics, performance requirements, torque and force calculations, finite element analysis, corrosion, material interactions, and icould go on and on. All the while making trade off decisions. in this case probably around center of gravity and ground clearance (I’m speculating). But then guy with wrench comes along, knows better and degrades an entire profession?!? Cool truck through

@@huckefinwoodcrafter308 not bad price wise I'm wanting to get the larger 6x6 version then turn it in to a wildland fire truck for doing prescribed fires and federal fire contracting there a great chassis that's capable of having a 1000 gallon tank. The cat motor is a plus but I wish they were Cummins (Preference) But parts and service availability is critical for my application the truck will be going to the west coast alot from the southeast (arkansas) I'm worried about the little things like getting the truck dot compliant finding tires finding parts for the inflation system
