I dug up two of those runners or sprouts last spring and put them both in 3 gallon pots . A couple months later I went to transplant them and I couldn’t lift the pots . Roots had grown down through the drainage hole in each pot . I had to get my pruners and cut the roots and they were thick . The roots must be strong to grow through your container bottoms but they get weaker and start crumbling a bit after a couple years .
@BIGALTX

Yes, I’m sure that’s what happened. The containers lifespan is just about up. And yes, if there’s a drainage hole in the bottom of a pot, they will definitely find it.

Third option: That is cane that is sprouting from the old root stock still in ground from where you had plants there before you put them in tubs. I have had plants show back years after I was certain they were all dead. I have Kiowas sprouting where I have not had kiowas in 8 years.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 ай бұрын
Sure, that will happen. However, this was not a place where I ever had blackberries in the ground. They were about 100 yards away when they were in the ground. Seems evident that there is a rupture in the bottom of this blue tub. Thanks for the comment.

I had a bunch of thornless blackberries growing in beds in my back yard. Two years ago my wife decided for me that we should move the blackberry patch to the far back of our property. I used pots of earth to tip root my new stock to move them and after those were viable we cut down all the remaining berry canes and tilled the dirt till it was very fine. We decided to create a new raised bed gardening system with large metal beds. We put down woven fabric weed blocker under the beds. It took a while to get the beds filled and we finally began planting this spring. What's really weird is that I have blackberry plants coming up in random places in my yard now two years after we cleaned the patch off. Apparently small pieces of root survived in the ground and are now coming up two years later. I've been digging them up and consolidating them in another area out of the way. A few even showed up in the raised bed area coming up through gaps in the fabric. These thing are tough and seem to be hard to eliminate.

I use both Earth Boxes and the black mineral tubs. My oldest Earth Boxes are around 13 years old and still going strong. Same for the black mineral tubs. The blue mineral tubs are made of thinner material than the black ones and crack/deteriorate more quickly. Just don't stack the black ones. Getting them apart is nearly impossible. I even drilled holes in them to prevent a vacuum, but they just get too wedged together.

If you can get some of the empty black PVM tubs, made in Sealy Texas, they are much more heavy-duty than the blue ones you are using. I have some 20 years old, still working. Not paying big bucks for Earth Boxes. I feed the PVM tubs to my cattle so I have a good supply.

Most likely they went through the bottom. I started with about 40 plants in the ground and they put out runners so ferociously that I had to start pulling them out and replanting them. Now I have over 100 and they keep going!!! Good problem to have for me :) I've also had some look dead as can be just to see them sprouting up again as soon as they get some rain. Hi Allen, Should I take out suckers that sprouted up in my containers. They don't look like the big thick Primeacanes that come up, they look like a vine more than a cane. Would these make a new plant like a cutting and send up big canes months later? Thank you for your great PAF blackberry videos. I watch them over and over. Dale H. near Baton Rouge, Louisiana
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 ай бұрын
I know what you’re talking about… I get those in most of my tubs. Actually, they are a new primocane, but they just don’t look like the rest of the canes. However, they will produce a few berries next year, so you may want to leave them alone. As for propagating them, I’m not sure I’ve never tried it, but it’s worth a shot.

Earthbox Prime Ark update: I have a 6 foot cain growing in the soil next to my Earthbox. Watching your video I decided to find out what is going on. My Earthbox had sank into the soil a bit, so I had to get a shovel an nudge it up a bit. The drain hole was a solid mass of roots going into the ground, and that's where the cain came from. Doesn't seem to impact the Prime Arks in the Earthbox, they are growing fine and producing nearly continuously.

This is the fourth year for these blackberries to be in these blue tubs, but I don’t know exactly how old they are. They may have been bought 2 or 3 years before that. Just not sure exactly how old they might be. I have already replaced one, and have a video on it. It’s not that hard. I just lifted the blackberry with my front end loader and slid another tub under it and set it down. Slicker than snot.

The plants have been in containers for 6 weeks. The blue berries are slowly growing new growth and they are green but not a bright green. But the raspberries have next to no new growth and are have pale lime green weak looking leaves. I’m in eastern New Mexico just west of Lubbock , zone 7b I believe. Any ideas on what to check?

I have one mineral tub that nothing grows in. I think there must be something residual in it. Don't know if that is your problem. I planted some beans in it this year. A couple sprouted, but wouldn't grow. I moved them to a different tub and they took off. I will dump the soil someplace on the property I don't care about and scrub it really well before I try planting in it again. You might move the raspberries to a different place.
