@@Ass_of_Amalek Ironically, "æ," in practically all contexts, represents the "a" sound in "cat," "trap," and of course the General American pronunciation of "flag," so you basically wrote the General American pronunciation. Without using IPA symbols, I would write it out like "Fleig," as the "a" sound in h0ser's pronunciation is a diphthong between "e" (as in "may" or "weigh") and "i" (as in "bit"). But there is no technical reason not to spell it without IPA symbols, which would render /fleɪg/ for h0ser and /flæg/ for General American. Oh, and if you're wondering why I said "æ" represents the near-open front unrounded vowel (aside from just the IPA connection XD [Which means International Phonetic Association, not Indian Pale Ale you braindead imbecile {sorry I just predicted you would be one XD no harm meant}]) because the original letter in Old English, æ, represented that SAME sound which is why it was chosen for the IPA symbol. Technically "æ" isn't even a letter, it's a ligature (NO not like in a Clarinet Mr Squidwardface XD XD XD LMAO) which is when you have two letters coming together to make one new symbol. Usually ligatures are used because scribes back in the day (LOOK how old I am saying "back in the day LOL" even though I'm only 11 years old (AND STILL SMARTER THAN YOU XD XD LMFAO) because it was WAY faster and WAY easier than writing out both letters separately (...somehow even though you practically did THAT lol I'm even smarter than ANCIENT SCRIBES!!!) ...ANYWAY,,... the ligature arose out of the RUNIC alphabet used by Germanic peoples way way back (which does have uncertain origins, although it almost certainly came from either the Ancient Greek, Etruscan, or Roman alphabets! FUN FACT TIME...DONE!) which looked like this: "ᚫ" (I'm not seeing the resemblance lol it's actually done this way because when the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were Christianizing, the Latin language [and by extension alphabet] were seen as the most superior ways of writing, so they were used instead of the older, "barbarian," "pagan" scripts (which I think look quite cool LOL) so they just combined two that already existed (they did this A LOT...English had so many more sounds than Latin and instead of using newer letters, they just stuck two together and called it a day LMAO I would've done it so much better, but, like, but ANYWAY GUYS, or should I say? GUY IDK sorry for assuming ur gender. ANYWHOMST... I think that the fact you've gone ahead and used that spelling is really quite racist because you've juxtaposed an ANCIENT SACRED LETTER (still used in Icelandic btw who are SUPER WHITE) onto any old video about nations?? DO you not see how racist that is???? You're spreading symbols of white history, pride, supremacy, and hate onto videos about other cultures! THIS IS SO OFFENSIVE! So as someone with a higher IQ than you, I will ask you KINDLY to shut your mouth (or your fingers XD LOL since ur typing that out XD) and go outside for once in a while!!!! and LEARN about other cultures and what things actually mean (EDUCATE YOURSELF) instead of spreading white symbols and not even knowing what they mean (LOL). THIS is the problem with schooling these days. Kids aren't raised on GOOD souls like Kanye West and instead are taught by the RACIST RIGHT WING MEDIA!!! @@Adam-326 right, which can be long or short, and in this case it's the long version. this could be clarified as 'æh', except that in this case it is forming a two letter diphthong with the 'y'/'i' after it, so an added 'h' would function as a consonant making two syllables out of a diphthong. probably the majority of 'a's in the english language are pronounced like 'æ'. there is no way to spell out that the 'æ' is long (unless you would prefer 'ææ', but that would be an informal method and possible to confuse with "æ'æ", again adding a syllable), thus 'flæygs' is the most reasonable way to spell the word as hoser pronounces it. 'flæigs' would also work, but that kinda looks like it calls for a celtic pronunciation attempt.
@Ass_of_Amalek Жыл бұрын
@@Adam-326 the diphthong in "sky", "eye", "cry" or "I" is 'ai' with a proper 'a' that most other languages would recognise as such (english is weird about vowels and how it spells them, with the diphthong 'i' for example being very strange). it has nothing to do with 'æ'. in "slay", it is in principle the same 'æy' hoser uses, but I don't think that it is commonly pronounced quite as long. there probably are regional accents that do that though. and I suppose if you intend to use it like "slay queen", one would say it that way. xD

Here's the story behind the Indonesia and Monaco flags: Monaco's flag was adopted in April 1881. Chosen by Prince Charles III in 1881, the national banner recalls the colors of the Grimaldi coat of arms, which themselves recall the red and white colors of the heraldry of the Genoese Republic, the cradle of the Prince's Family. The House of Grimaldi was founded in 1160 by Grimaldo Canella in Genoa and became the ruling house of Monaco when Francesco Grimaldi captured Monaco in 1297. Monaco's flag has a 4:5 ratio and Indonesia's at 2:3. And the shade of red is darker for Monaco. The Indonesian flag's colors are derived from the banner of the Majapahit Empire. The red and white symbolism can also be traced to the older common Austronesian mythology of the duality of Mother Earth (red) and Father Sky (white). This is why these colors appear in so many flags throughout Austronesia, from Tahiti to Madagascar. In the early 20th century these colors were revived by students and then nationalists, as an expression of nationalism against the Dutch. The modern red and white flag which was first flown in Java in 1928. After Indonesia's independence was declared and a war with the Dutch ensued, Indonesian youths removed a colonial Dutch flag flying over Surabaya's Yamato Hotel (now Hotel Majapahit), tore off the blue strip and re-hoisted it as an Indonesian flag. So symbolically, it can be interpreted as the Dutch flag without the blue, signifying the divorce.

I mean, before flags became more and more standardized and commodified with mechanized mass production in the United States, the national flag often had many variations in the arrangement of stars, often creating patterns such as a giant five-pointed star, a circle, or a diamond (like Arkansas has now). It’s pretty creative, honestly, and I wish we could see more of this in the US, as long as it stays tasteful/aesthetically pleasing, of course. I think it's not quite that we don't conceptualize "Earth" but rather that we tend to define ourselves by what we're *not* as much as by what we are. Country flags are relevant because *other* countries exist - in fact, people's sense of national identity is always stronger when confronted with *other* nations (e.g. while traveling or living abroad, in international sports matches, in wars, and so on). So I don't see there being a case for an Earth flag until "not-Earth" becomes politically relevant somehow, either by human colonies elsewhere or by us encountering aliens.

Sometimes you can just tell the passion of a group whether it's a nation, city, county, province, prefecture, or state by looking at their flag. The island nation of Kiribati for example has a wicked cool flag. The flag is the expansion of the coat of arms of the former Gilbert and Ellice Islands colonial flag, like how Maryland's just an expanded version of the banner of arms of Cecil Calvert, the 2nd Baron Baltimore. The insignia was designed by Sir Arthur Grimble in 1932. The bird on the flag is a frigate bird which represents power, poise, freedom and Kiribati cultural dance patterns. The sun rising refers to Kiribati's location astride the Equator. It has 17 rays to represent the Gilbert Islands and Banaba. While the waves are of course the Pacific Ocean! Zheleznogorsk in Russia is another example of a unique flag that gets the point across. Zheleznogorsk, or previously known as Krasnoyarsk-26, is a closed city that was created in 1950 for the extraction of plutonium. The last reactor for plutonium production shut down in 2010, however the city is still closed because of its importance to the defense industrial complex. So to represent the reason for the city's existence, there is a bear that is splitting an atom!

I've thought of a good flag for humanity, which is different than earth: a blue background with a white circle in the middle. On the white circle is the negative image of a human hand, showing the blue "underneath." I thought of it from the first art that humans ever made: handprints on cave walls. Also it counts as both a left hand and a right hand if you look at the flag from the other side, so it includes lefties as well

You might see the Red Hand of Ulster, but it wasn't used for more than a few years in the early 20th century. You'll usually see a Union Jack or the Irish Tricolor instead to donate the political allegiance of the people living in that area, and a warning to get out if you're not part of that group. There have been suggestions from both sides of the political spectrum to use St Patrick's Saltaire as it goes with the theme that England and Scotland have for their flags, and has an icon that everyone acknowledges; St Patrick. But so far, we're just cast to have a blank white rectange on flag lists.

from the film Death By Hanging, in which the protagonist who is scheduled to be hung is unaware of ideas like nations: “What is a nation? Show me one! I do not want to be killed by an abstraction!” He goes on to question the idea of land ownership and how a nation denotes the land as theirs, and if that’s just. Just food for thought with the idea you posed of being in Tokyo.

There’s a video by the Templin Institute on flag designs which might help answer or provide discussion to the questions and points in this video. Just an fyi for anyone interested in the topic.

A flag represents an idea or a set of ideas on a canvas (usually out of cloth). The cat flag is an idea, american flag is an idea and any other flag is an idea
