I think India's institutions, while young, will likely persevere. The system actually maps well onto their society as states have more often than not caved to the broader society than the reverse in India. So they should broadly keep it.

As an Indonesian, the situation of secession could be happening if things were to go wrong but for now, our sense of Indonesian identity is stronger than regional identity. We usually don't view things in a concrete A or B, whether it's culture, languages, and ethnic backgrounds. Chinese Indonesians will see themselves more as an Indonesian rather than Chinese, ask a Minang/Batak/Ambon/Manado/Bali/etc. person, they will reply they are Indonesian first then their background (ofc if u are a foreigner asking). I personally am kinda fed up with the whole idea that regionalism is still stronger than a nationalist identity because throughout my experience talking with many different people from different backgrounds, they are really friendly and identify themselves as Indonesian. Of course, things will look differently if we talk about religion and Papua issues but overall, Indonesia is more united than ever and will continue to be more and more united in the near future.

Because his sources of understanding on nationalism is from european nations perspective which develop national Identity mainly from ethnicity unlike Indonesia which develop its identity throug the suffering under Dutch colonialism and long time trade relarionship. I mean our main slogan is "in differences we are united" which is from Majapahit era writting, as such Indonesian even before colonialism have strong relation between each ethnic groups.

We passed 1945, 1965, and 1998 without the Balkanization happening. What kind of event would break up Indonesia if the invasion, genocide, or economic crisis didn't work? Sometimes westerners can't accept the concept that together in differences is highly possible to happen.

Very good points, but you seem to have failed to understand Indonesian nationalism, and you put it in a European perspective, where ethnics are the root of nationalism. From your perspective, states like Russia and India won't exist. We can all agree here that the root of Indonesia's problem is corruption and other stuff, not ethnic differences (well maybe not west Papua but you get what I'm trying to say here). The heavy emphasis on separatism, in the end, is quite jarring. East Timor wasn't supposed to be part of Indonesia in the first place. Supported by the U.S, Indonesia under Soeharto invaded Timor Leste in 1975 under the pretext of anti-communism and decided to eat it. They were an occupied independent country. Separatism in Indonesia is not that big of an issue thanks to the presence of a lingua franca, increasing federalism, and heavy investment in the outer islands. Sacrificing its lust rainforest for development, handling the impact of climate change, creeping fundamentalism, and managing its human resources are more debated topics, especially in the next 50 years. But! This doesn't excuse nor discredit the lack of national discourse on the ever-present racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination. Things are still rotting. The point is, that different groups of people can still make compromises and live together without the need for an ethnostate. Civic and constitutional nationalism exist y'all.

The emphasis on separatism is far from accurate though. Those flags the video showed bearing the names "Minahasa, Batak, Dayak, Flores" are completely fictional. I'm a Minahasan Christian, AND INDONESIAN, and I've never seen that flag bearing the name of my ethnic group before. The only separatist movement that exists or had existed are the Papua and Maluku ones. The Maluku was already defeated, and there has never been any more uprisings or issues leading to seccession. I think when foreigners (especially Europeans) look at Indonesia at a glance, and see that we have a lot of things to differentiate between ourselves, they tend to think of the worst is to come. But as a matter of fact, the opposite is true. We are proud of our ethnic backgrounds and we are proud Indonesians. We accept, understand, and are proud of our diversity; and the fact that we are able to coexist, cooperate, and even assimilate in tolerance is a God-given grace. We are grateful for it, we are grateful to be born Indonesian

As an Indonesian, I want to explain some correction: 1) 3:49 It's not entirely true about food production is centered among coastline of 3 major Island, especially in Java. Here rice field is way deep into interior of the island. Northern part of Java island is mostly plain with some hills, having a most fertile soil in the country thanks to the volcanism nearby. For the island of Sumatra and Borneo, food production mainly nearby a river since a soil in deep interior isn't really good for planting rice (instead we planting palm oil there) 2) 6:45 By some account is still debated if Majapahit really conquered Nusantara archipelago. Other theory explain if Majapahit mainly used diplomatic power to having control overseas (by having an allies, or vassal states) since they don't even manage to conquered their neighbour in the backyard a.k.a Sundanese (though they manage to conquered Bali with military force) 3) 15:05 Is incorrect to calling inhabitants of Java as "Javanese", they're one of major ethnic mainly living in Central & Eastern Java. There's other major ethics living there need to be considered: Sundanese, Betawi, Maduranese, and other smaller one. Sundanese and Betawi mainly live in Western Java (while Maduranese living in Eastern Java alongside with Javanese) 4) 16:20 Java-centric (by politics and national development) is one of the root that giving rise of separatism here. Usually they're mad due to giving lots of resources to the central goverment but gain only a little. From few separatist movement we managed to solved 2 of them: Free Timor Timur (by giving them Independence as it should be) and GAM/Free Aceh Movement (by giving them more autonomy and all GAM leaders agreed with that in 2005) 5) 16:40 Well honestly that's a real legitimacy of current Indonesian territory: being a successor of Dutch East Indies. Though our education said we're successor of Majapahit Empire as well as their legitimacy (this actually inherited from Budi Utomo's idea about Indonesian nationalism, which actually embrace Javanese imperialism)

As a Filipino dude Indonesia is almost everything I wish my country could be (excpet for the 'x' times more islands and and even more vast) but cannot afford to do so due to our own different geographi and historical circumstances to be able to be "that country everybody is chill with": • because they're not directly in between two powerful countries trying to use their country as a base to influnce/ manipulate/ or just plain strangle the hell out of the other country; • not living in a very high-maintenance geographic location were food production is always getting limited by typhoons no matter how fertile the soil is, infrastructure getting "reset buttoned" by earthquakes as much as in the Philippines; • the colonizers not generally shoving their faith and their lifestyle to the locals' face so they get to keep their own original culture and not antagonize eachother (Mindanao); • and can live normally being themselves and not constantly & toxically trying be "one with the cOoL kIdZ in the block" like trying to be western and having a woke "protagonism complex" (tryna feel like the bida/good guys of a movie) even though we can't afford to and should'nt really be doing so in the first place (although this helps our tourism industry but sometimes the attention seeking backfires at times). It would be interesting for Indonesia to be a regional power that the Philippines can live along with since they are a lot more chill and would like to see itself "helping & hanging out with its long lost cousin" (compared to the two powerful countries trying to influence my country and always tends to think that the world revolves around them), but Indonesia is also a HUUUUUGE economic competitor because whatever the Philippines have, Indonesia terrifyingly has it like 4x even more (export crops, rice terraces, manufacturing, & more exotic culture for tourism, etc.) But I don't want the Philippines to go toxic on its cousin, so my country naturally (sometimes toxically) needs to seek trade and attention elsewhere for its own & everybody's good. I tend to disagree. There was barely any shared history, and the way the colonizers (not only the Dutch, btw) would treat the locals varies vastly between region to region. For example, the plantation slavery in Java would be so different towards Dutch-Minahasan relations in Sulawesi due to the vast difference in local hierarchy, culture, and natural resources. Not even all regions and ethnicities considered themselves colonized. For example, as much as I love West Papua being part of Indonesia, that was completely a political maneuver on Soekarno’s side. Ethnicity-wise, let’s be real, a ton of us, collectively, dislike each other. If anything, that’s a testament of how effective the Indonesian nationalist propaganda has been (hey, it’s worked on me too) given the short time it’s been around.

As usual when I see this type of videos they failed understand the idea of Indonesia Nationalism and try to put it into european point of view which is, ethnicity as the sources of nationality. In that logic there shouldnt be India and the US should be divided into smaller states. I think most ID people here will agree if I said most discontent nowdays are rarely targeted because of ethnic conflict but due to government curroption or political actions to earn votes on election.

Can't agree more. If i make a personal list of indonesia's biggest problems i wouldn't even consider unity of the country in the top 10 Indonesia's main challenges: 1. Equal development across the country 2. Competency of (mostly) the lower end of the government (i said the lower end because like it or not jokowi is more than competent running the country so far) 3. Better quality of education(better teachers) 4. Poverty elevations 5. Eradicating corruption in all levels of the society 6. More infrastructure to ease the logistic to the outer islands 7. Islamic extremism 8. More high end manufacturing and leaving exporting raw materials 9. R&D to boost innovation 10. Bringing the economic potential of other islands outside java 11. Better waste management (please don't litter the ocean)

One thing you did not mention in the video is that indeed the dutch owned indonesia but indirectly through voc that was controlled by people who had stockes in it only when voc went bankrupt due to financing wars to seize controll of spices' monopoly the dutch state took over indonesia and had appointed a governor to run it.

East Timor is never the part of us even historically is never under the shadow of Dutch colonial empire, it was Portuguese, and we made a mistake for colonialized it because of cold war situation (fear of rising communistic regime at East Timor that would bring us on the same situation with Cuba although it's actually not much communistic and moreso socialism or left leaning regime but Cold War mentality became the motivation for Timor Leste invasion). Our true mistake was Sipadan and Ligitan which is now Malaysian island. The thing that i fear the most is the rise of fundamentalism (Indonesia has to be kept as secular at all cost or this country will be separated thus your point of islam as a uniting element for Indonesia is invalid, we had a constitution named Piagam Jakarta which was included an obligation to believe in Islamic god but the constitution changed after proclamation to be more accepting towards other religion, but the problem is our freedom of religion is stricted to 6 state religions and not taking account to Atheism and Agnosticism. It's not fully freedom of beliefs) and i got a mixed feeling when it comes to enviromental situation, people need to feed and a place to settle so the enviromental change on forest regions to be villages or cities is inevitable, unless if you want to genocide us, but the idea of eco-city or eco-society can make balance between the needs of urbanism and environmental preservation. Human resources are also the big issue, we still need to reform education and provide more infrastructures such as network infrastructures, schools, streets, bridges, electricities since there are still many of remote areas that haven't got electricity and proper connection from school to the village, not to mention the quality of electricity itself.

just a slight but important correction: the strait of Malacca is shared with Peninsular Malaysia and (sort of by extension) Singapore. So Indonesia does not get full autonomy in things that do and do not pass through it. In fact, the busiest ports in the strait are all Malaysian, only eclipsed by the Port of Singapore (which is technically not part of the Malacca strait). Indonesia's busiest port isnt even in the Malacca strait, its off the Jakarta Bay and typically cuts through the sea between Jawa and Sumatra.

Indonesians already traded with indigenous Australians, it was Makassar people who made trade contacts, Makassar people also teach many things to the natives of the Australian continent, Makassar people look for sea cucumbers to sell to China, It's amazing that even though the Makassarese were able to conquer Australia but they didn't do it, they preferred to trade while teaching something to the natives of the Australian continent, But when the Europeans came, the Europeans began to carry out many colonial policies by levying taxes on the Makassarese, And continue to increase tax rates, until the Makassar people feel no more profit from selling sea cucumbers, from there the contact between the Makassar people and the indigenous inhabitants of the Australian continent was cut off, then after that the European colonizers made the Australian continent a dumping ground for British criminal convicts, That's when the horror experienced by the indigenous people of the Australian continent, Makassar people are still remembered and considered brothers by the indigenous people of the Australian continent, Come to Darwin's territory and meet the Aboriginal people, Ask them about Makassar people, they will tell you many things about Makassar people, one of which is about the painting of Makassarese outrigger boats

Quite a 'Murica-centric view. Nationalized industries and centralized control was important to keep the islands united and fend off any colonial takeovers. In this aspect Indonesia was far too vulnerable compared to India in the same 1950s+ era. Somewhere middle he says the economy should be more liberalized and then at the end says they can follow the chinese state-owned industries export model. Not like I'm advocating for any, but the respective country should apply a customized strategy considering its own geo-strategic position. And not be like "unregulated free-markets go brr". As usual at the end he said Indonesia was "unified" into a country by the dutch, even though once upon a time, the Majapahits ruled the same place as well.

Well it’s more western centric view in general. Most people interpret different history and cultures through there own cultural and historical lens. Plus, the victor writes history and it’s only been W’s for the West for the last 500 years (until recently) so most people are gonna have a western centric view.

Indonesia is used to be referred as the Southeast Asian version of India due to many exact things (both pros and cons): large population, diverse religion and ethnic groups, a growing economy, and similarly, being embroiled in many troubles relating to territory, religion or people. Indonesia's rise is, akin to India, very turbulent at best, due to its history of struggling to connect all parts together. In some way, if India can rise, then Indonesia can, too. Except that Indonesia does not have nuclear weapons, which India has.

Thanks for making an Indonesian video, but once again you REALLY missed a few important points that I think you probably are so ignorant of 🤭 About Indonesia's unity, the country itself is more *stable* than you think, thanks a damn lot to our *national symbol* and *motto*, *The Garuda Pancasila* that holds up the 5 principles of our ideology on a shield, The Pancasila itself and our *"Bhineka Tunggal Ika"*, taken from a *600+ year old* javanese script which roughly translates to *Unity In Diversity*, and Let me tell you it's a powerful line for the people of Indonesia. We as Indonesians have been taught and learnt of how powerful unity is and how catastrophic things could spark up if we decide to be apart from each other and do not set aside our differences. A prime example of how Indonesia fell into the unworthy hands of colonizers that used the exact technique of Divide and Conquer in order to take control of our lands even further. All of those we have been multiply thought as a citizen of a *multicultural* *society* like *Indonesia* and so past events would not be repeated. So everyone would feel a stronger sense of *nationalism* that we already had *deep within* us and a hope that we would stay united even forever. Those, are the reasons of why we are still united until today, and for I hope that it would stay like that for long as a fellow Indonesian citizen that shared the same national identity as to all my beloved- fellow Indonesian countrymen. So, whatever on earth do you mean by islam uniting the country and people when it's only a majority wise for its population. I can see you are *exaggerating* so much about *Indonesia's separatism* when it doesn't even came out on the Indonesian people's mind on the daily basis. Why would it when our government has successfully took down past rebellions like the Free Aceh Movement that seceded in 2004 by an agreement and more like the South Maluku in 1950s. Why would we be so concerned when the state had tried it's best to keep our unity EVEN *without the background reason of* dutch *colonialism* in the archipelago and stick up with our national motto, when the government celebrates all of our "recognized"/ official religions by making them a public holiday that made us into a multicultural society ethnic and beliefs wise. Sure there's still stuff going on with the West Papua rebellions that the government or The *President* himself, have been trying to make things for it like *further developing* the region and it's infrastructures that have said to calm the unrest/rebels. A lot of our fellow Papuans are said to adore him for the effort he did. Even the Garuda bird that i mentioned is a mythological bird from the Hindu religion, an emblem of the world's largest muslim nation/ population by country. Do you see that happening in states like Afghanistan, Pakistan or any other muslim majority states? No single offense to them but you seem to be acting like and you're prolly also gonna be satisfied if we break into smaller pieces like we should be ain't it? I was really expecting this video to talk more about our economic situation today that i am really interested on and wanted a video from you about it as we are currently having a pretty stable and even a higher growth economy despite some inflation and spiked up gas prices and in the middle of todays world's recession that seems to spews everywhere. Our debts are quite low and majority of the people still has food to eat. That way it would match the tittle a bit more about being the Asian economic power. I would say I still do appreciated some points and this video that you've worked on in general and I am also aware that we still have a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to be the strong power we're trying to work on like some that you've mentioned in the video, although with a slight dissatisfaction from the stuff i've just mentioned. - sincerely, your Indonesian viewer 🇮🇩

Westerners are generally unable to comprehend our mindset of unity. For the rest of their (European) history, they have always been presented with a highly tribal nation building, focusing on homogenity. This mindset of tribal superiority over the others is what created the many wars and conflicts that plague their small continent.

The theory of the break up of Indonesia does not make sense anymore. As it has been seen by the younger generation more inclined to be unity of the state rather than regionalization, heck a lot of local ethnic languages are predicted to be extinct in the next decade just because it has no purpose in the Indonesian educational system that used Bahasa Indonesia rather than each their own ethnic languages
@jokerofmorocco
@jokerofmorocco 2 жыл бұрын
And how is that a good thing? Native languages should be preserved. Also part of the reason why separatism isnt as big is because of the settler colonialism going on in Papua where they try to outnumber the native Papuans by mass-migrating Javanese there to dilute their population

@@jokerofmoroccoAlso i don't see why migrating to Papua is a bad thing. The whole reason, Indonesia is supporting mass migration into Papua is because it is so sparsely populated. Unlike real settler state like USA, Australia, and Canada. Indonesia does not marginalize papuans and force them into native reservation, and instead view them as equals
@jokerofmorocco
@jokerofmorocco Жыл бұрын
@@exelenxius5832 It's bad because the intention of the transmigration policy is to replace the Papuans to make them no longer the majority in their own lands and to make Papua lose its ethnic and cultural distinctiveness by making it the exact same as Java or Sumatra. Javanese should stop breeding like rabbits and implement family planning in Java if they're worried about population density rather than moving to other islands especially West Papua.
