I was given one of these lovelies when I was 10 - I left him with mum and dad when I got married and moved to a flat at 22 - he lived for 16 years - after I left home he became my father's shadow. I took care of his grooming whilst at home - not sure professional groomers were very common back in the 60's - I would sit on the steps of the front porch and comb his beautiful sable and white coat - I'd fill a large bag with his fur. His white bib would glisten like silver in the sun and his fur was like silk. He was an extremely gentle, loving and intelligent dog - hie was happiest when the four of us would sit down for dinner and he could sprawl under the table and touch each of us with one of his extremities - his herding instinct fully satisfied. So many beautiful memories and I still shed a few tears when I think of him all these decades later - he was my childhood best friend and my protective brother.

Your story reminds me of my sweet boy Gabe… he was my angel and my very best buddy… I found him laying in a cardboard box in a Walmart parking lot when I was in college… I took him home with me after going right back into walmart and buying him a bed, some toys and some puppy food… the next day I took him to my uncle who is a vet and got him his shots, dewormed and a flea treatment… Gabriel was a collie/lab mix and a beautiful, sweet sweet boy who followed me everywhere I went… I took him everywhere with me… at night when I went to work, he went with me and slept out in my truck … I went out on my breaks and lunch to let him out to go to the bathroom… after I got married in 2000 he was still my best buddy… my husband once said, "I swear you love that dog more than you love me." I jokingly replied, "it’s not that I love him more… I’ve just loved him longer." 😂 Gabe crossed the rainbow bridge when he was 15 years old… he has been gone for 14 years and I still miss him to this day… I have a 14 year old Bull mastiff named Aliyah and I buried her brother, Hotch last month… he was also 14…I got him a month after Gabriel passed away… I was so grief stricken that my husband drug me to the OKC Animal Shelter and told me to go pick someone out… I came out with a little yellow lab/whippet that I named Hotch…. He was a special boy too… all of my dogs are special in their own way… I miss him very much and she’s a tear every time I think about him and Gabe… it's not fair that they only get to spend so little time here with us …

Thought about that too and did some research. Its apparently because of the noise, smell and the concentrated heat that a blow dryer has that dogs dont like / hate them. The height of their popularity was during the TV show "Lassie" in the 50s/60s. Everyone wanted their own Lassie. The show started off in Black & White - imagine that! That's a lifetime & more go! While the name was female, the actual dog actors were male as their coats & sizes are bigger.

I would not call that "easy to maintain" if you have to groom them once a month - I have a lagotto + I know what I am talking about. they are also toutet as easy to care for - but you have to plug the ears, cut the nails + especially the hair between them... mine change into a fur monster with infected ears within two weeks if I do not care + in summer and autumn I have to remove a handful of seeds and parts of grass from her fur after each walk if I do not keep her very short through this time.

My family had a rough collie in lighter coloring, actually extremely similar to Lassie from TV. She was also a good bit bigger than Abbie, but she loved baths - and hated being brushed. She lived to 11, 12 years old after doing an escape-artist move at 4 or 5 and then running into the street, where she got hit, necessitating a hip replacement. That hip was the *only* part that didn't hurt when she aged. She eventually could not walk around the house or play at all in the yard. I choose to remember her as the brown and white blur able to leap clear over a full size bed.

Oh, my! She’s an elderly collie, but her floof is still Majestic! She’s looks good, Vanessa!👍💕

Truly well bred full size rough collie. An exemplar of the breed. You did her great justice Vanessa. I hope she is no longer kenneled for long periods and standing in poop. Abby did appreciate her grooming, she did show her appreciation in the end. Brave old lass.

Thank you for being so good with sweet Abby. You were very kind and thoughtful of her age and fear. I’m sure she left feeling better to be clean and fluffed up again. I hope she can have a nice long nap somewhere warm for awhile now. Her owner must have been thrilled! Just think of the affection that you enable because after a trip to see you, the animals are a pleasure to snuggle with!

Abby is a gorgeous Rough Collie ❤ and she was a little nervous during the bath time of the grooming session, but as the rest of the groom progresses she was getting better after you tightened the collar part of the lead while you were trying to blow dry her 😊 The calming toan of your voice and the gentle touch of your hands and heart ❤️ allowed Ms Abby to relax and allow you to finish her grooming session with a wonderful outcome ❤😊❤ Abby might be a 10 year old lady that has mobility issues, but she's still a beautiful Old Dame that represents the Rough Collie Breed ❤😊❤ Thank You Vanessa For Everything You Do For All The Animals ❤🐾🐾❤ and Owners that come to you for Help ❤😊❤😊❤😊❤😊❤

Protective of family; good watch dog. Highly trainable and eager to please. Sweet, gentle, and sensitive. High maintenance for their coat and sometimes mental health/anxiety.

Oh Vanessa! Abby is such a Gorgeous Girl! She is even more spectacular after your kind grooming. Thank you. I had a B&W Aussie rescued at about 8 years old. She had not had good care until she joined our family. Robyn was extremely arthritic and suffered through every groom, even when I combed and brushed her as gently as possible. It is not easy to care for a dog in advancing age and physical problems. But it is so worth every single effort to give as much love and comfort as they can accept. 😇💟

I have an 11 year old Sheltie that I got last year. Her coat was pretty rough when I got her, but after a few months of regular grooming and some daily camelina oil, my Abby is in much better shape. Wonderful job with this Abby, as usual❤.

I saw two Shelties (mother and daughter) last weekend. Hadn't seen any in many years. Their owner let me play with them. What sweet, well-behaved dogs.

I’ve got a 12 year old pup. Watching this makes me realize how blessed we are to have her in good health, with minimal, if any, joint issues. She still bounds around with our newest pup as if she were 3 years old.

Such a dignified old lady! My cousin had a rough collie, and while i didnt care for the cousin all that much, Max was the sweetest boy on the planet and very eager to run around in the backyard with me whenever we went to visit. Also he was probably about the same size as Abby, maybe a little bigger, but i dont remember him being a massive dog

Love your explanation about the nails being “too long” after grooming- I have so many clients who only come in every 2-3 months complaining that I didn’t get the nails short enough, but the same people will obviously complain if I send their dogs home with bleeding nails ! And they rarely listen to the advice of bringing them in more often because they think we’re just trying to make more money. I hope people find your videos and become more educated about stuff like this! I will say we do have a handful of clients who listen and come in every two weeks for nail trims and have successfully receded the quicks which makes it worth it though!
