Charlie may be a whisker chewer. I've known a few of those. We had a gorgeous goofball of a boy Siamese who would sit in a doorway and lean into the door jamb to bend his whiskers towards his own mouth and then chew, chew, chew. We were worried it was a stress thing, but the vet said some cats just like to chew whiskers. His mom and sister, who also lived with us their whole lives, would smack him in the head if he tried to chew on their whiskers, so he came up with his own method of getting his tasty whisker fix. Barney was a good boy. Dopey as they come, but such sweetie.
@shendisackettАй бұрын
Wow I've had cats for over 25 years and never heard of that before. Not their own whiskers anyway! I'm not surprised his relatives smacked him on the head. Siamese are more prone to pica though from what I understand. I had a moggy who was obsessed with chasing her tail, and acting like it wasn't attached. She was perfectly healthy but my ex husband wanted me to take her to the vet, I said to him and what exactly would I say? My cat's weird? In my experience they're all weird!

@@CallieCEntertainment she was an indoor cat so had never had an accident and was as I said perfectly healthy. Not everything has a medical explanation, it was just her favourite 'toy' for a while. I did end up mentioning it once at the vets and they checked her and said lots of cats do it as their tail and their siblings tails are their first toy. She mostly grew out of it when she learned to play fetch, but on odd occasions would still play with her tail. As I said some cats are just a little weird, all of mine have had their own little quirks. My current kitty loves shredding cardboard. Give her a box and she's in heaven as she gets to sit in a box whilst tearing it up. She never eats it, she kindly spits it out for me to clear up 😆 Her name is Luna but she's known as Loopy Lu. She also growls when there's a knock on the door if we are chilling or it's dark out, and if any animals dare to enter her garden she's at the window banging her paws on it and swearing at them.

I don't think some people realize how difficult it can be to care for an aging cat. If a cat doesn't want to do something, it's NOT going to do it. You'd be surprised how nimble even an elderly cat can be when wiggling away from you and the claw clippers or pills. You have to pick your battles while trying to do what's best for them and their quality of life. I had to sneak cutting a claw here and there because my elderly cat would only allow me to once before getting defensive. Sometimes his claws would get long enough to curl into the paw pad before i was able to take care of it. It can be really hard to feel like you're always upsetting and stressing out your cat that you truly love and are just trying to help. It's always shades of gray, never just black and white.

One of my rescue cats is probably 12 or so; her exact age is lost to history. She is mostly deaf and has hyperthyroidism and a heart murmur, but she is a total sweetheart. I will freely admit to spoiling her, just a bit, because I don't know how long she'll keep blessing me with her little life.

@hannaedwards4723Ай бұрын
Same here. My 20 year old was easier to clip as she got older, and i had to brush her but she was a shorthair. We adopted another lady at 11 (now 13) and i do check her claws, and we tag team clipping her dew claws, to get her used to it for when we might need to do all of the claws. She doesn't love it but we established enough trust to quickly get the dew claws done every few months.

Thick claws are very common in older cats because they don’t use their scratching posts as much, whether from arthritis or another reason. We’ve had several super seniors & they all eventually developed thick claws.
@StreetPreacherrАй бұрын
Is it more common for strictly INDOOR cats to develop arthritis? My black domestic short hair is 14 and has been an indoor/outdoor cat (always inside overnight) for probably the last 12 years... Luckily he's only ever required vet visits for regular shots, seems to be as spry as ever, and doesn't appear to have any problems with self cleaning. Is there a chance that regular exercise of hopping fences etc. actually prevents joint issues? I also notice that I only ever need to clip his FRONT claws. He doesn't have a scratching post, or damage furniture, so I figure just running around outside is enough to keep the back claws from becoming overgrown.

Seriously, some cats are horribly embarrassed when they are shaved, personality can change (and not for the better). Both my daughter and I (at different times) had cats professionally shaved due to the information that they would tolerate the heat much much better (totally indoor cats, but we tried to do what we were instructed to do.) My daughter's cat cried and hid for weeks after the shave. Plus her beautiful long hair never did grow back the same. My cat just hid for a few days, but the beautiful shaded stripes in his hair also did not grow back - he became just one color with no stripes after the shave. I highly do not recommend shaving a long-haired cat IF it can possibly be avoided. (The cats were professionally groomed/shaved at different and unrelated facilities.)

If it's already common in cats that aren't diabetic, then it might be unrelated to diabetes even if diabetic cats have it too ;) These cats were describes as elderly, and it is common for elderly cats to have a thinner coat above the eyes - not unlike how humans get thinner hair as we grow old. That spot above the eyes is also where the cats have their "this is mine" scent glands, which they like to rub on things they lay claim to, which means the fur there gets some additional wear and tear so to speak. You're right that hair loss *can* be a diabetes symptom, but it isn't always related to diabetes (and from my understanding it's not commonly because of diabetes). It's important to look for additional symptoms to narrow down the actual cause, *Here's a list of additional things that can cause hair loss in cats, in case some other cat owner is reading this and worry about their fur baby:* stress genetics excessive grooming inflammatory disease a hormonal disorder bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection protein deficiency allergies It's a long list, but with most of those things there should be *additional symptoms* to look for to narrow it down. And again, *sometimes cats just get thin fur from normal aging.* Unlike humans, cats don't seem to have gendered patterns of hair loss, but the thinning is easier to spot on cats with light skin and short dark fur.

Had a beauty like this one named Misty. My grumpy old lady, I miss her. She lived to her 20s and was a chonky girl when she passed, the vet was shocked at how old she was because she looked so healthy. Took a piece of my heart with her. I love my kitten, and I’d give anything to have another year with Misty.

Luckily my 14 year old black domestic shorthair has only ever been to the veterinary for regular shots... I manage to trim his claws at home, and have nursed his wounds from the occasional 'turf war'. The problem with BLACK cats is it tends to hide any blood, so you don't even realize they're been injured until you try to touch in them in a spot that got cut, and they suddenly get angry for no obvious reason. His biggest problem is the occasionally EYE INFECTION, always the result of getting in a swatting session with a neighborhood cat, but luckily a few ant-biotic eye drops always clear up the cloudiness in a less than a week! He's also still able to self-clean, as far as I can tell. Fur always looks shiny/smooth, and he smells nice, so I'll probably just end up bathing him in the shower if it's ever necessary. He does sometimes go out in the rain, so hopefully that means he won't be scared of some soap and water :) Which breed do people find to the be the HEALTHIEST felines? I love cats, but just HATE the idea of dropping a few grand on some treatment that might or might not work, and the cat ending up with a significantly diminished quality of life anyway. It might be cruel to say, but 15 years isn't bad for a cat, and kittens are nearly free... So if I there's ever a $10K Vet Bill, decisions might needs to be made. And don't talk to be about insurance, in my experience Pet Insurance is almost useless for anything you'd REALLY need it for.

I have a diabetic senior cat that my bf adopted from a friend who was unable to keep her. In many cats, the diabetes appears in their senior years and often has nothing to do with the care they have received. My kitty adores prosciutto like my bf. But she loves all treats. She has special food and insulin to help keep her condition under control and keep her healthy. We also have kittens, and they are helping her to exercise a bit more, too! Edit: please know she has only had prosciutto once in her life. And that is because we were eating some and dropped a scrap! She went absolutely nuts and kept begging for more, but we know she shouldn’t really eat it, and didn’t give it to her.

Boots and Charlie are lovely senior cats. Loved hearing Boots purr. Charlie seemed more scared than anything else. Here in the UK we call non-pedigree cats Moggies. I have 8 beautiful rescue Moggies. Four are gorgeous black cats, two are Tabby brothers, one is a handsome, large Tuxedo and the other is a lovely (and extremely loving) Ginger and White cat. Our Ginger and White started putting on a lot of weight. He was about 6 months old when I was asked to foster him (foster fail - again). He would eat his own food really fast then push the other cats out of the way and eat theirs. We fed him separately from the rest of the cats until he came down in weight to a normal size for his age. He was fine for a while then he started doing the same again, so we fed him separately for a couple of months until he lost the weight. This time he got the message and now eats his own and doesn't push our other cats away from their food. I think with some rescue cats, they don't know where their next meal is coming from so they eat everything they see. Our cat is 6 years old now and although he is a chunky cat, he is not too overweight. It is something we keep our eye on because we want to try and avoid diseases like diabetes and arthritis in later life. He also knows he won't go hungry with us as they have regular mealtimes.
