Something to note about this song is how he uses the words people and love. In Korean 사람(sa-ram) “people”and 사랑 (sa-rang) “love” are similar in spelling. There is only 1 letter difference and it changes the meaning. Also the word 사라 (sa-ra) means “life” or “live”. I find it interesting how he plays with the words so poetically. Just a little fun fact for you 😊
@evantesseract737

Didn't he say he thought about calling it 사라 so people could choose for themselves if it was 사랑 or 사람? But it was confusing so he picked one. 😅 I love the way he plays with words

I guess you can compare IU's fame in Korea the same as Taylor Swift in America, she is a household name, everyone knows IU in Korea for having an amazing voice and as well as an amazing musician and lyricist. The way you talked about the intention behind his word choices is spot on 👏 Too many will chalk it down to something else because English isn’t their first language, and those people clearly don’t know much about poetry or the fact that if Suga ever writes words that throw the ear off, that make you stop & think, then it’s 100% intentional. This man thinks so deeply about his word play. There are no mistakes. Just very purposeful, planned word dynamics. He moulds words like clay with a pristine artist’s eye and he’s very very particular. Music is his life and he’s told us that many many times. There’s an Agust D documentary showing soon on Disney+ which will chronicle him preparing for this album incase you’re interested Knox 💜

Wow Knox! I was blown away in the first 30 seconds of your comments. You're so good at this!! Well this had me in my feelings and gave me a lot to think about. So far with all of their solo releases, what's really sticking out to me is just how difficult they all found the pandemic. I know we already knew that to an extent but it's clear that they were truly devastated and lost. Their post Covid works are filled to the brim with what we all felt then. Fear of losing touch, relationships crumbling, destruction, helplessness - added on top of that their fear of losing us, the fans. They were one of few artists who still kept giving when the world stopped - we got music, concerts, comfort etc. They put so much of themselves out there for others to heal with and I hope this time is allowing themselves their own type of healing

bts members really work so hard. for the past decade, they've been grinding non-stop. perhaps when covid happened, they feared that the lack of activity will result to fans forgetting them and their music. hence, "losing everything." and they often think they're loved for their personas and needed the reminder that they are loved even as just themselves, outside the limelight and fame. that's why the last line hit so hard. he's also reminding himself that he should love him. i'm glad they've all come to realize this. army has also proven we'd be around, no matter what. 💜

I love that you pointed out the poetic proximities in the verse and how interesting it is with the double negatives. I see it as the way time flowed during pandemic lockdown time was really weird. Days overlapped each other and went fast and slow in random unexpected ways. And the lines of the verse sort of seem to do that imo. If you end the lines at different words it’s like there are sentences within sentences? I’m waffling but I’ve had fun interpreting this one!

Thought you’d enjoy this note - The double entendre in the line 'what comes at the end of love?', referring to both the ending spelling of SARAM & SARANG and the ending of a relationship... Hey! I wanted to drop a msg here to tell you that a big reason why I got into BTS back in Oct 2021 was actually your breakdown of Suga and RM's rap! I wasn't as familiar with their work and not at all into Kpop as a whole. But your in-depth analysis made sense to me and actually opened my eyes to their poetry/lyricism. The lyrics, the gut-wrenching, so emotional, heartfelt delivery, as well as Suran's beautiful r&b vocals are amazing, so inspirational, meaningful, need to be heard, beautiful song! Suran is a solo R&B artist that Sugar worked with again on her song 'Wine', later on as producer, which he won for Best R&B producer for that yr as well as Suran won for Best R&B Artist that yr as well!! But a loving especially this particular song with IU. Her vocals were just stunningly beautiful. Yoongi has also worked with another equally well know r&b artist Hieze, who he produced for as well, that I don’t recall being react to yet. SUGA is going different direction with this album. He let go of all the anger and with it all the agressive spitting. Now he is more chilled, which is not a bad thing. I love his sound right now. His singing improved as well, by a lot. I wouldnt be surprised if theres a legit folk/rock /alternative rock song on his album. I am just a little worried that there will be people expecting AgustD or daechwita 2.0 and not finding it, starting complaining and hate campaigns. I really really hope this doesnt happen. I want Yoongi happy, at peace with himself, inspired to do all kinds of music, more than I want another hardcore rap song. Just do what makes him happy. Saying all this, i still have zero idea what the album sounds like, of course, i might be completely off. AT THE END, APPLAUSES TO SUGAR.👏👏❤

Thank you, Knox! You never fail to amaze me. I want to share a story since you said something again about Yoongi's rap style (with the pockets and all 😋). I'm a metal musician and I love progressive music. I love the syncopated rhythms, odd timings, technicalities, and the overall complexity. He is my bias and the way he raps really caught me at first because it's kinda unconventional (for me at least), just like the music I like. I didn't think that I can find something like it outside my genre. I'm slowly learning the beauty and intricacies of rap, mainly because of him. I never thought that I would explore a different genre and want to incorporate it into future compositions. I've learned so far that metal and rap aren't completely different, and they can go hand in hand to create something uniquely beautiful. ☺️ Reactions/interpretations like yours make me realize, again and again, how lucky I am to have found BTS. BTS, in general, really shifted my entire mindset towards music. 😌 Thank you also for helping us reach a wider audience. Lastly, please continue on blessing us with your knowledge! It really helps us put the ideas we can't properly formulate into perspective and actual words, as sometimes, we can be too preoccupied admiring them lol. 😅 Thank you again! 💜

Something else, a contributor for the backing vocals is Adora. She had her solo debut in 2021, but was a producer for Big Hit (BTS and TXT) for years before, and notably provided a good amount of the female backing vocals for their songs, including Yoongi's song Seesaw.

The featured artist is IU. If you don't know IU you should. She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world today. In fact Rolling Stone Magazine says she is one of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. This is her 2nd time working with IU. The 1st time was back in 2020 on her song Eight which is about her struggle dealing with the suicide deaths of 3 friends. The last 2 passed away in 2019, Sulli, one of her best friends died just as she was starting her Love Poem tour. And Goo Hara who IU learned of her passing during the last concert in Seoul 30 days later. She reached out to Suga t produce the song and was featured in it.

tysm for your reactions, always love them a lot and your way to interprete and analyze songs. Dont know if someone mentioned it already, but it´s important imo: the song wasn´t supposed to be "People Pt.2" (there´s "People" on one of his previous mixtapes). He wanted the song to be "sara" (korean) - with a -ng ending it would be sarang = love and with a -m ending it would be saram = people. depending on whichever consonant you put at the end of the word it´s people or love.. so it would have been the listener´s choice

I should also add that BTS lived together in one luxury apartment that they called their dorm; so depends where each member was when covid lockdowns came into effect. Regardless, the abrupt cancellation of their world tour and all their planned projects would have been an extreme shock and the feelings of helplessness, loneliness and frustration can be overwhelming even in the company of others. V also wrote about this in their song "Blue and Grey".

Thank you so much for this excellent reaction! You're right, it is profound and your analysis and interpretation of the musical elements and the lyrics make for a rewarding watch. Yoongi's words are always low-key but deeply impactful. No longer angry Yoongi, this is an introspective, still angst-ridden Yoongi. The blend of his and IU's voices is absolutely beautiful. I love the shots of him smiling and with the dog.

Loved all of your interpretations of the lyrics and focusing on the poetry in the lyrics! After I saw his comments after the end of the song, I listened to it again and with the knowledge that it was a message to himself during Covid-19, I related the song to my own experience of time when all the usual the world was on lock down.
