Even though it didn't end up being the solution, if you ever have to kill boos for a key again, I'm pretty sure boo circles count as one entity. You have to kill the entire circle to get the key from them. So by running left and right, never killing a full circle, you actually gave yourself a zero percent chance to get anything from them.

Yoshi got between the munchers because of spawning/despawning mechanics. Yoshi doesn't despawn as long as he's alive. So he was between the munchers when they spawned. You could have gotten him out by despawning the munchers. I once made a puzzle level that used this type of mechanic actually.

Ryu: that Yoshi has a star! Muncher: he he, Yoshi go squish. Fun Fact: loaded items stay loaded farther off screen than not loaded items need to load. In other words, items don't exist until they're loaded so Yoshi can run through their position while a certain distance off screen. The same is true for enemies but they can't go as far.
