Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of: Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals John Deacon - Bass guitar "Bohemian Rhapsody" released originally in 1975 is the creation of Freddie Mercury but he never told anyone what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics. Freddie often writes in metaphors so I would not suggest trying to take these lyrics literally. He wanted listeners to be able to apply to the song whatever meaning it had to them personally. Not what it meant to him. BTW - Freddie did admit that it was composed of three separate songs that he had been working on but could not seem to finish. So he decided to mash them together, adding some transitions and bridges, and created "Bohemian Rhapsody". "Bohemian Rhapsody" can be broken down into 6 parts: Part I is the "Into". The video image shows the four members of Queen singing and harmonizing the lyrics of the "Intro" in acapella. In reality, it is only Freddie's voice you hear on the recording. Freddie laid down 5 separate tracks of himself singing and harmonizing with himself. (FYI - multi-tracking and overdubbing runs rampant in Bohemian Rhapsody.) Next is the "Ballad" portion of the song ('Mama, just killed a man'). Freddie had worked on this song for years but it never had a name. The other members of Queen tentatively titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song". The lyrist Tim Rice (who wrote the lyrics for "Jesus Christ, Superstar", "Evita", "Alladin", "The Lion King", ...) who was a close friend of Freddie's believes this portion of the song’s lyrics were about Freddie confessing to his fans that he was gay (a radical and scary thing to do in 1975). The third section is the guitar solo. This is the only part of Bohemian Rhapsody not written by Freddie. Freddie told Brian that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and where he wanted it to fit into the song but left it to Brian to create. Brian wanted to have his guitar effectively sing a verse that would inject a different melody. He heard something in his head. He said that he could hear this melody and had no idea where it came from. That melody isn’t anywhere else in the song, but it’s on a familiar chord sequence, so it dovetails in quite nicely. The guitar solo leads to the fourth section the "Operatic" section. Freddie not only loved Rock but he loved Opera. He was always fascinated with the idea of combining rock and opera. It took 3 weeks to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Operatic" section was much smaller when they began recording but Freddie kept adding on to it. There are various lyrics in the "Operatic" section that seems to refer to the band. Freddie appears to cast himself as Scaramouche, a stock clown of 16th-century Italian literature who dances around making a fool of himself but speaks the truth. Galileo who was an Italian astrometer, physicist, and engineer definitely refers to Brian (Queen's lead guitarist) who in real life is Dr. Brian May, a scholar with a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. Figaro refers to the Mozart opera, "The Marriage of Figaro" and it is a subtle way to reference Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) who has a four-range vocal span (E2-E6) and was even frequently cited as hitting E5 while playing the drums in live performances. Freddie compared Roger's voice to a dog whistle. The final reference of Magnifico is Queen's bass guitarist, John Deacon, who has a degree in Electrical Engineering. John is the creator of the "Deacy Amp" which when connected to Brian May's homemade guitar (the Red Special) through a treble-booster could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals. It is hard to realize that it is only Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing in the "Operatic" section (John never sang on the records). This was 1975, well before digital recordings and autotune. Recordings were made using 24-track analog tape. The limits of tape made it necessary for the three vocalists to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. Some sections of Bohemian Rhapsody feature 180 separate overdubs! The fifth section is the "Hard Rock" portion. In this section, Freddie sings angry lyrics addressed to an unspecified "you", accusing them of betrayal and abuse and insisting "can't do this to me, baby", before the final lines conclude with him singing, "just gotta get right outta here". FYI - the "Operatic" and the "Hard Rock" sections of BoRap were featured in a scene in the 1992 film Wayne's World, in which the main character and his friends headbang in a car to the rock part. Because of the success of Wayne's World, Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released in the U.S. in 1992 and rose to Number 2 on the Billboard chart. In the sixth and final section, the "Outro" returns back to the "Ballad" to close the circle of the song and ends with the sound of a Chinese gong. Welcome to the world of Queen.

It boggles my mind that this song/video was released nearly 50 years ago. This was the first video that was ever produced for promotion of a song and Queen finished it very quickly and on a very small budget. They needed to promote their song but were leaving the country to go on tour so they made a video to show in their stead on Top Of The Pops which was the only place in the UK to really premier and promote your music. Their usual format on that show was lipsync but in this case, they had to settle for the video. It was their policy to play the number 1 song each week and this song stayed on top for 9 weeks which really annoyed the producers of the show because of the length of it. Most songs had to come in around 3 minutes or less to actually get radio play back then and this song was around 6 minutes. Yes, more Queen. React to Queen songs and the Queen Army will beat a path to your door. BUT! never break in on a Brian May Guitar Solo or a rain of hate will come down on you from that Queen Army. Queen doesn't generally block so you are usually okay on their songs and live performances with just a pause or two. Use the official Queen site to get your Queen stuff and you will probably be alright. I am glad you liked Bohemian Rhapsody, it is beautiful. Probably the next song should be "Somebody To Love" live at Montreal. You will really see how together this band is live and how confident and great Freddie is as a Frontman. Queen is even better live than studio and they kill it in the studio. Thank you for your reaction

A lot of people consider this Freddie's coming out song but he never really came out during his life. He felt that was private but this is often interpreted that way. If that interpretation is true, he was killing his earlier persona, Farrokh Bulsara, born to a religious family and becoming Freddie Mercury who was bi/gay and one of, if not the best male vocalists in rock history..

Queen is a band of 4 people, three of them are still alive. The drummer is called Roger Taylor, the guitarrist Brian May, the bassist John ´Richard´ (true fans will understand that) Deacon and the lead singers name is Freddie Mercury. He died in 1991 because of Aids, Brian and Roger are still on tour with Adam Lambert, nobody does really know a thing about John, the dead of Fred was too much for him... Maybe you know their movie which is also called Bohemian Rhapsody. It´s a song by Freddie Mercury and I only know that even the band mates didn´t knew why he called the song Bohemian Rhapsody. They thougt he would call it `Killed a man´ or something like that (that´s what I know from their interviews. I´m pretty sure you know their iconic songs `We will rock you´ and `We are the Champions´. Most of the fans also say that they remember Live Aid as the best Conzert of Queen which is also my choice. There´s an unbelievable performance of `Radio gaga´. Maybe you´ve still reacted to that but if you didn´t, please do it quickly!!! I hope the answer of a 12 year old girl helped you! So many people try to make this song "mean" something when I think Freddie was just telling a story: boy kills someone, instantly ruining his own life; tells mom, tries to run, gets caught, tries to beg for his life, they won't let him go, etc. Freddie was quite a story teller in the early years (Fairy Fellers Master Stroke, My Fairy King, Great King Rat, Seven Seas of Rhye.) 👏👏👏Welcome to the Queen’s world! You can find a huge catalog of their amazing and versatile songs and stunning live performances. You can choose any of them you never won’t be disappointed. Let me introduce you the Queen: Freddie Mercury the lead singer and pianist, Brian May the guitarist, John Deacon the bassist and Roger Taylor the drummer, they all were highly graduated and of course they were great musicians. Queen is the most versatile rock band, they wrote their own stuff in several genres from rock to jazz, to pop, etc. about 200 songs. Freddie never took singing lessons, but his powerful and emotional performances are still legendary. There are several theories about the meaning of the song, but Freddie never explained his lyrics and especially not this one, it remains his secret forever. He composed this masterpiece from 3 earlier written and unfinished songs. All those beautiful harmonies are the result of a very complicated 3 weeks recording in 6 different studios, only Freddie knew how it had to be sounded. Pls, check out Save Me at Montreal 81.

Queen is the best band ever. This was Freddie Mercury's Opus. It's telling the story of a young poor boy who killed a man and told his mother and he said look I was so smart I had it all but I'm just a poor kid, I'm going to run mama! Mama says no, the devil is in you, they won't let you go. And at the end he resigns himself to the consequences of his crime, Meet me where the wind blows! Beautiful! It's done in different genres almost like an operatic play. Freddie Mercury's background musical training was classical. The man is a lyricak genius and this isn't a song, this is a composition. All their music is stunning and ahead its time. My 9 and 11 yr old grandsons know every word!

I have to say, watching you (a total newbie to Queen) carefully and thoughtfully work your way through this piece of music was just a delight! Yes, the video is a bit of an acid trip but the music itself is next level amazing, and you totally tapped into that. "Three songs in one" is actually quite correct. Freddie Mercury was very much into opera and wanted to make a rock song that captured all the drama and different moods of an opera. Clearly, he succeeded.

It’s a crime committed, a confession to his mom, his arrest, searching for a defense using methods real and characters of fiction used, (research those names), the trial: his attorneys arguing his case, “ he’s a poor boy, let him go”, He’s found guilty “we will not let him go”, and convicted, sentenced to die, knowing he’s going to hell. (Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me.” ) Then, his berating the court, berating his mom, berating the attorneys, his attempt to escape, “got to get right out of here”. He’s recaptured. Then, resigning to his fate, “nothing really matters”. Finally, the gong…his execution. That’s the short explanation.

Understand, this is only my interpretation. It’s true, Freddie wanted the listener to make their own sense of the song. Many think it was his, “coming out” admission while hinting he was dying from AIDS. but the lyrics simply don’t imply any such thing. Plus, he was very private about his personal life and this was written many years before the AIDS epidemic. I believe this was intended to become an opera (Freddie loved opera) that he never got the chance to flesh out. The Rhapsody title hints at that intention and the musical transitions scream of operatic influences. Each lyrical passage make sense to me especially with each section as it relates to the one that follows. Sorry for the rant. Enjoyed your reaction. Please explore more Queen. Trust me…that band employed every genre of music from rock to blues to gospel influenced to country to pop to anthems. They Are the Champions and They Will Rock You! 😉 Get it? No? You will. May I humbly suggest “Somebody to Love,” live 1981 in Montreal and, their performance at “Live Aid”, 1985? Live Aid was a charity concert for the famine in Ethiopia with 60 headline rock acts performing in both London and Philadelphia. It was linked by 13 satellites and seen by over a billion people all over the world. To this day, Queen’s performance is considered the best live performance by a rock band. When they left the stage after their set, Elton John said to Freddie, “You SOB, how can anyone follow that!” Interestingly, Freddie had a painful throat infection and was advised by his doctor not to perform but he went on anyway and became a legend. Sadly, he passed away from AIDS in 1991. Sorry for the rant but as an 80 year old, 45 year rabid fan girl/grandma, I love that young people are discovering these talented musicians. Freddie Mercury, multi instrumentalist, lead vocals. Dr, Brian May guitar, vocals (astrophysicist). Roger Taylor, drums, vocals, high falsetto (studied Biology), John Deacon, bass guitar (electronic engineer).

One interpretation of this song is that it conveys the emotional journey of Freddy 'coming out' to his family and the world as a gay man. It happened around the time of his marriage break-up. The person he refer to in the song as being killed was Farrokh Bulsara (Freddy's real name) and the 'official' image of him as being straight. It was about him stopping the pretence. It's brilliant.

If you watched Shaun of The Dead movies, you heard "You're My Best Friend" and "Don't Stop Me Now". Anime? "Killer Queen". Rap? also "Killer Queen" and a sample from "Under Pressure"

It is not a literal death he is singing about. It is all about his coming out of the closet as gay. The man he killed was (HIM) His old self was gone the new Freddie was born. Freddie was terrified about letting anyone know, especially in the early years when (In those days) it was not as accepted , and could have literally destroyed his up and coming career. The operatic section was the Indecision , the battle that was taking place in his mind.Sort of like the Devil on one shoulder the Angel on the other tugging him in both directions at once. This song is the truest masterpiece EVER written by a Rock band . Hands down Queen were The real Monarchy of Pop Rock. They were what all others tried to emulate. They single-handedly influenced MANY artists . Even Lady Gaga was a Huge fan. She got her name from one of their songs "Radio Gaga".
