Cycling Around The World (자전거 세계여행)

Күн бұрын

The border between China and Korean peninsular is connected by river. We, Korean, call Amnok River at the west side. It is called Duman River on the east side.
It is called Duman River on the east side. This is very important river in Korean peninsular history. That's why I came here. I got the dream on my world tour. If I succeeded to cycle six continents, I must go back home through North Korea. That's why I've never been back home while cycling over 12 years. I wanted to show my own Korean people and the world with my bicycle. No matter how the politic situation is complicated, we still could be connected. Finally I've cycled over six continents over 12years. But I failed to make this dream real after waiting 12 years. Although I gave up dream, I want to overcome my frustration by cycling from Amnok to Duman River

Hello Jin, perhaps the most emotional video of your long journey. Maybe for consolation: In 1982 I cycled to Marseille. Quite by chance I met an Australian who was also cycling. We had met a year earlier in Ireland. The joy was great. I invited him to my place. A few weeks later he visited me in Frankfurt. We rode our bikes into the mountains. A long climb. At the top the road was blocked by a wide fence. You could look further. A strip about 500 meters wide where nothing was growing could be seen. Dogs patrolled, soldiers with rifles. It was the border between West Germany and East Germany that was drawn after the war. The west was the conquered territory of the USA, the east was the conquered territory of Russia. He was totally impressed and said it was the most powerful event of his entire European trip. 8 years later the border fell. When we met, people from the West and from the East, we were surprised to see that they spoke exactly the same dialect. And much more. Maybe a little consolation for you. At some point maybe it will happen to you or to us. Best regards Bernard

Wonderful video. 20 years ago I made inquiries about cycling through North Korea (I had a contact in a charity that worked in the country) but it proved impossible. Hopefully one day you can do it. But its a fantastic idea to cycle along the border - I always find borders so interesting - so many stories about why a particular line gets drawn on a map.

Nov 2022 I had my first bike tour, it is from Seoul to Busan. I really enjoyed it. The bike trail could possibly be the best. When I reached the finish line next to the Nakdong river, I had a wish someday I hope I could be able to cycle from Busan to Seoul and then to Pyongyang and onto China. I hope that day may come soon.

I'm quite curious (like you are), how do the Chinese feel about the North Koreans? Is there any racism? Did you ever need to defend your Korean heritage, against locals who would suspect you of being a North Korean? The nighttime video showing the stark difference between the vibrant Chinese city and a dark North Korean side is striking.

Dear Jin, don't be sad! I am sure, your dream will soon be fullfilled. Perhaps you can observe, that the world is actually rapidly changing. Most important changes are happening in the background and already occured positive changes are irreversible. First visible step in the foreground is the fall of the western dominance and by this a rapid ending of further wars in the near future. I can not recognize a mechanism, which could actually enforce North Corea to open its borders. Actually North Corea helps stabilizing ballance of forces between US, China and Russia at the side of Russia (and NOT against China). Putin never forced his strategic partners to any political changes within their countrys. Which seems sad in case of dictatorships has its positive side, as Russia gives its partner a feeling of safety, which makes them more confident with their enemies and even with their population, which could at least be positive at the end. This is dfferent to the behaviour of the US, which allways supportet rumors within any country even at their friends and which often was the reason for dictators to be so hard with their opponents. Anyway I know, that in a near future there will be no possibility to inprison so many people, so that this opening will happen in probably few years. Diktators will never be able to suppress their peoples in the future! In the past there have been forces in the background, enabeling and forcing suppression of peoples, which are meanwhile dissolved. Wo does so in future, will be naked without any safety and support. Most important in any case: Don't adore alleged saviors, even if the do mirracles and identify themselves as "powers of light" or something simmilar! Such forces may play a not really negative roll in the first step, better sayd do something good (and probably help fullfill your dream). But they or at least the forces behind them are NOT our real friends. So stay awake and see things happen WITHOUT becomming part of any ideology or religion or esotherics! Enyoy life and hear on your heart! I wish you all the best and much joy. Best regards...

I feel sorry for you that you couldn´t make your dream come true. but it´s not your fault. The world is getting more aggresiv and not more peaceful during the last years . China has the power and the influence on North Korea to lead it to a more peaceful politik but instead China gives support to Kim and Putin for there war against democracy. It´s a sad world but keep on cycling, it keeps the wheel on turning.
