Great DIY infomercial, thanks! That’s insane - 11¢ each!! I have a friend who has a second home in Michigan that apparently has “all the basswood I want” on it. I turned him down initially. About to make a call and change that order!! 😅 Loving the 1x1 series! I had a grain split on a project I was working on March 28 that cost me 10 stitches. Once I get the feeling back in my index finger I’ll have some catching up to do. Thanks again for taking the time to get this content out to us.

Good way to show how to break down a large piece and the resulting cost per piece. Last weekend was the first trip of the season to our cabin in the high country. I grabbed a piece of aspen from the rack, brought home and cut into 1 in. It carved as nice as basswood. We have nearly 300 acres of aspen, my wood costs just dropped substantially.

I was extremely fortunate to score some, very rough, free basswood 1x7x36" planks at a recent woodcarving show in Wisconsin! Wow, buzzed up on the table saw creates soooo many 1x1 sticks! What a fun size to carve....and display around the house...

Compared to pine lumber that block seems expensive,but it works out so cheap when you cut it up. Not to mention all the hours of enjoyment you get from it. Nice job Doug! You lead the pack of carvers on KZbin for sure. For those who collect/save their carving chips - or should be, here's an idea; I have purchased hand carved fish decoys and the carver 'packed' the fish with chips (aka 'dunnage') to protect it and to add to the hand carved experience. Great concept. The idea is to save the chips from our 'cheap material' hobby and when you sell one, use the chips to use as packing dunnage to help protect it and promote our hoppy/experience. This allows us to use the wood, chips, etc. and even drive costs lower!!!!! ; ) Cheers everyone.

Thats actually a really cheap chunk of wood compared to uk prices! I reckon about triple that cost for lime that size in my local UK sawmill (and getting thick blocks is near impossible too - thickest I can get is three inches). Maybe I should emigrate to Canada and cite ‘basswood accessibility’ as my reasons 😂😂😂 Great video as always Doug 👍

Yes Stu, as well as the cost, which in my mind is expensive here in the UK, we don’t have any choice regarding quality of the basswood as our Canadian friends do. From what I understand where the tree grows plays an important part of its hardness. Yes the sharpness of the tool is important of course but when I see carvers cutting into wood more easily than I can, using my Flexcut knives, I think it’s because it is a softer wood, just my opinion of course. Some wood even comes from China, apparently.

Yep. Agree with all this. Am in the UK but was in Canada a couple of years ago for some weeks and was doing some carving in my downtime. The basswood there is something else - I too was able to do Doug-sized cuts out of it, which is impossible with the lime we get here. I was beginning to think he was superhuman! Ps there are 2 species - the European one Tilia Europea (lime/linden) is much harder than the US Tilia Americana (basswood)

You're sooo right!! And even if folks don't have the tools: I buy mine in 1x1x12, and then cut to length. I'm sure i paid a little more than 11 cents but still a very small price per piece. Thanks again for this series. Perfect size for my smaller hands, and when I mess up too much, I just start all over with another piece of cheap wood.

Hey Doug, I'm lovin your 1x1 tutorials. I've hunted everywhere in New Zealand and unfortunately we simply don't have the option to buy Basswood in a larger slab type form. Cheapest I've found is 6x peices" @ 50mm x 25 x 25mm (2×1x1") which cost me $36.00 NZ ($6.00 @ peice NZ) which comverts to around $58.16 / $9.70 a peice US that's insane! Told my wife I'm going to start pruning our fruit trees haha. Due to our importation laws were not allowed to purchase from overseas without a license due to our strict infestation risk to our export tree/food industry so I might even try pine cause I can buy a full 6meter length of that for less than the $36 I paid for 6x little peice. Crazy Anyway thanks for posting awesome informative videos. Peace ✌️

When I started watching you a year and a half ago, I went out to find some Basswood at my local lumber shop. (No sawmill nearby, but a really good dedicated lumber store. Lots of unique pieces as well as the usual suspects). I found 2 six foot lengths of 2"x6" Basswood for $25 each. Both were poker straight with super straight long grain. I didn't count how many blocks it turned into, but it was a lot. So cheap.

I get my Bass wood at Manards for $10 for a piece 1.5”x3x10”. Sometimes I cut it with my back blade hand saw. I should go cut down the Basswood tree in my backyard but from what I’ve read I don’t think I’m prepared to process that many blocks. The tree is huge tho , I’d never have to look for wood again .

I've switched almost entirely to Aspen (aka quakie aspen) because it carves almost as well as bass. The only thing I have found is that hardness varies from bark to heart. The closer to the heart the harder. But it is free for the taking here in Utah where I live and according to the USDA Forest Service grows all over Canada. Give it a go and let me know.

I still have a block of bass wood I bought from Woodcraft a couple years ago. It's 3x3 and 12 inches long. I paid 11.50 for it back then. So it looks like I'll get 54 1x2 blocks out of it that averages out near .21 cents each. The blocks will be a little smaller than 1x2 since my saw blade will take up about 1/8. Oh well, still a fun project.

Haven't read all the comments, but even if you don't have a bandsaw it's still good value. A good ripsaw will cut basswood really easily and accurately and in a few hours you'd have your 250 pieces. Given that'd be a once a year (or three!) operation, it's worth giving up an afternoon for. For the final crosscuts too, it'd probably be worth clamping a few of the long one by one lengths together before sawing together to speed up the process.

yup... I bought 4/4 & 8/8 basswood boards from a mill in Ottawa 5" wide by 8'. Ripped on tablesaw to 1x1 ans chopsaw 1 stick to size. wirh shipping it's $0.21 per carve. let the fun begin😂
