Hello Mrs. Realistic ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). They're from Finland, with a Dutch singer, multi-platinum and have been going about 28 years - and still as popular as ever. World's best band IMO. New album out this year. It is a festival in Northern Germany with about 82,000 attending. Nightwish were headlining. Singer Floor Jansen is possibly the world's most versatile - everything from metal growls and screams to grand opera. Bassist Marco Hietala (sadly no longer with the band) is a great vocalist too and still performs solo.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZbin. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZbin in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years next march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Not really pioneers. Dozens of actual symphonic metal bands existed before nightwish and they hopped on the bandwagon once it started to get popular. They switched the style from power metal into symphonic well after the genera was established.

A very good reaction. Lead singer Floor Jansen is indeed tall, 6’1”without heels. The band are from Finland but Floor is Dutch. There is also an English multi instrumentalist who wasn’t on stage for this number. I see that Gabriel has been in touch. Mrs. Realistic...."Ghost Love Score" is a favorite of almost every Nightwish fan! I get tear drops rolling down my face just listening to Floor sing! At 66 years old, and A hard rock, heavy metal fan when I was a very young! Nightwish is in a classic their own. Floor also has a solo album...more pop music, which she writes! Fabulous album! Oh...the concert was sold as Nightwish was the headliner! Only 82,000 in attendance!

Lead singer Floor Jansen used to coach singers at Amy Lee's level. Ann Wilson was my favorite female vocalist for 40+ years. As my admiration for Floor's talent grew, it finally went over the top with her cover of Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort. Check it out!

My personal opinion, they are a notch below epic now, since this band member lineup of Wacken 2013 has changed, especially after Marko left 3 years ago. Still awesome, but not epic, cause Floor has to hold the whole band up during their performances.

When I saw them live, Floor did both parts for "planet hell" But troy really stepped up during "I want my tears back" and held his own. But you could tell it took alot out of him. Marco was so good, he always made it look easy.

During that interlude Floor Jansen flew up to Asgard, popped over to Jotunheim, slew a half-dozen Frost Giants, and then flew back onto the stage to finish her song of the gods. Yes; Floor is an Asgardian goddess, which explains why she's taller than all of the men, and why over 82,000 people are worshipping her. (Nightwish is a Finnish band, but Floor is Dutch, and the concert was held in Germany. Wacken is pronounced Vah-ken).

If you follow the "road map" Gabriel gave you you'll have a safe and pleasant journey, it's been tried and tested. When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013. This song wasn't on the set list for the tour originally since Anette didn't have the vocal ability to perform it. But Floor had heard the song when her first band After Forever" toured with Nightwish when Tarja, their first singer, was still in the band, and she loved it. So Floor asked Tuomas (the guy behind the keyboards) if they could make it a part of the set list. And they did, it was song number 13 of a 15 song set. There's som minor variations in the backing between Floors and Tarjas version, mainly that the choir have been reduced in volume. There's a video on youtube from, I think, Argentina, recorded Dec15th 2012. And there's one of Tarja doing it too. Yes, Floor is over six feet tall. And during the covid pandemic she recorded a home video of the song Alone that was a hit for Heart late seventies or eighties I think. I think this song may lead you to a rabbit hole full of Nightwish, Ayreon, After Forever, Epica and others. Enjoy.

As I couldn't find a mention of Emppu, the lead guitarist, he is the joker in the band. Hence why he was initially having a drink and strolling behind the drums. He is in fact playing most of the time filling in the music but does not often play extravagant solos unless required, the band plays as a whole ensemble.

Floor's previous bands where After forever aged 16, Revamp, Nightwish, Northward was a small project she had done. I was so happy when I saw that you found Nightwish. During my long life, I have had many musical favorites but only found four that I have become so obsessed with, that they will be with me as long as I live. The first was the Beatles ❤ who I discovered in 1963 (it's scary how old that makes me sound 😱👵🏻🤣). The next two were Aurora ❤and Nightwish ❤ who I discovered almost at the same time a few years ago. Nightwish really deserve all the praise they have received, their music is incredibly well composed and expertly performed. Tuomas's texts are fantasy and reality, dream and consciousness, natural realism and mystery. I never get tired of listening over and over and each time discovering new thoughts and feelings in myself. And as you may understand, Ren ❤️ is now one of the gang of four. I'm not saying he's better than everyone else, but there's something special and indefinably wonderful about him that makes me love him more than everyone else. He's probably the one I'll hear in my head, comforting me on my deathbed. Thank you for your Ren reactions and for this first Nightwish reaction, hopefully there are many more to come!

Very common to see US / Canada people comparing Nightwish to Evanescence because sadly this type of EU metal has very little presence in the Americas' mainstream. Symphonic Metal is a huge scene, just not on radios or TV in any meaningful way. I come from Brazil and it's the same there. I had to go after this music, it never came to me. As you listen to more of Nightwish and Floor you will come to realize they are very different. I love Evanescence by the way, and Amy's voice is absolutely haunting and beautiful. Floor is just very different, and has more range than any other vocalists I have heard. She sounds one way in this song, and on the next sounds different. And she keeps doing that. When you think she can't do anything else different, she growls :D A gift that keeps on giving, with work ethic and knowledge of her instrument unlike any other.

Very good Mrs. Realistic. Maybe I could mention, to get back into the music a 5 second back is very handy and can be done immediately with the left or back arrow, the right does the reverse and j does 10 secs. Your format is appreciated and noted in that the material is given the full screen while the reactor takes a corner, it not a common style and to my mind it should be. I applaud you for that and give the only one thumbs up that I am allowed !!

Actually, it is the music industry that is the problem here. The industry is more concerned with quantity over quality. Bands that could sell out arenas and other large venues, because they don't market here, and/or have a label here, don't get radio play or perform very much here. Sadly, the way things are going, the 2012/2013 tour Nightwish did here may be the most extensive tour they will ever do in the US. Which means that Nightwish may never get the recognition here that they have in Europe, or even in other places around the world.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The Amy Lee reference (Evanescence) is common in reactors new to this genre, but heads up...Nightwish fans are generous and helpful, and generally forgiving, however the general idea is that Amy Lee, with no disrespect, is limited in range while Floor sings anything from death metal (not kidding) to Opera (also literally), and everything in between

You're very perceptive on several points: 1) She is tall, 6ft+ 2) The band is Finnish (though this singer is Dutch and lives with her Swedish husband in Sweden). This is the 13th song in a 15 song set. Wacken is a relatively small town (9000 people) and the festival draws many large bands including NW for concerts. Wacken citizens get free tickets. Ticket sales for others sell out a year in advance. When this concert was selling out, the prior singer was on the ticket (her name was Anette Olzon). This crowd of 82000+ people had bought tickets expecting Anette - even though she was a less liked singer for NW. Anette was good, but Floor was asked to finish the tour and we got her instead. We were really happy about that. NW does concerts all over the world. They were in Oregon or Washington state when Anette was fired. Floor was hired to finish the tour in the Americas (North/Central/South) and then through Europe. Unfortunately, all bands start regionally because it funds travel. The first singer of NW (Tarja) was fired (ironically) because she didn't want to do shows in the US. On a given tour these days, NW does several gigs in the US (though some gigs have been hampered by COVID make-up dates and then Floor got pregnant. She sang into what looked like her 6th-7th month. She also had to pause when a lump in her breast needed to be removed. The big thing with pipes is an art piece surrounding three keyboards and some other musical equipment (and a rack for his bottle of wine ;-). Music from around the world gets better exposure because years ago radio only played what a few labels wanted played and most radio stations only played bands that fit tightly inside a genre. Starting in the 80s/90s, sub-genres began getting play on large stations, but there was still a limit. Then there was a brief period where massive illegal song distribution via Napster et al. opened up an awareness that we weren't seeing 1% of the world's music. See Mongolian group The HU with Lzzy Hale sing "Song of Women" (a particularly moving song), or Baby Metal's "Headbanger", or any K-Pop band to realize that we've been sheltered in our consumption of music. Even in the US, many people haven't heard of the a cappella band Pentatonix. Their rendition of "Hallelujah" is wonderful. They also recorded an excellent medley of 90s dance music. There are only so many hours in a day - regrettably. In the meantime, welcome to Nightwish. Be careful with comparisons to Amy Lee/Evanescence - it's a sore spot for some reason. btw - Amy Lee did not want E to have a rock part - it was forced by the label. See her sing with Lzzy Hale in "Break In".

What sometimes gets overlooked at first is the poetry in the lyrics from Tuomas by the grandioseness of the band, he is a brilliant writer/composer but what never gets subdued by the band is Floors voice! - Was so fortunate to see Nightwish live in Chicago last May such a performance live.....
