When we were kids they had a mule that walked in a circle and turned a compression wheel where the canes were fed into it to crush the canes squeezing the juice out. The juice was then cooked in a copper tray over a fire until it was reduced to the correct consistency! It was a 24 hour process with some one tending the fire and watching the syrup at all times. Loved going to watch them!

About 40 years ago my son (about 10) and I were visiting my parents in western N.Carolina and I bought several quart jars of sorghum syrup. Wrapped them in my son's PJs and packed them in carryon luggage. Well at airport security had to open my bag and unwrap the jars to prove they were not "bombs". My son was soooo embarrassed that people could see his PJs!😂

I chopped and peeled 4 of my 20 stalks, just to munch on them. They were delicious, but I was disappointed in the amount of juice they held. I guess I'll just chew on the rest of them, because I won't get a cup of juice from the lot, I reckon. I think I have plenty of seed to plant an actual crop, next Spring. Do they sell on line. Not able to find a link. Big fan of molasses from my childhood. Just wondered how this lined up with molasses in flavor. I bet he would have liked hot biscuits with melting butter drizzled with sorghum syrup.

This was fun!! Justin, I have a question. I didn't grow up using syrup, other than the stuff in the store, and it was rare even then, that we got it. A couple of years back, I ordered some Sorghum Syrup from a farm, up your way, and it made me sick to my stomach. I ordered 2 bottles, and I thought maybe something was in the first one, and so I opened the next one..Same thing. It made me sick to my stomach. Is it me? Or could it have been a bad batch? I have stayed away from it since.
@metcalfmills56792 жыл бұрын
I don’t know why that would have happened. Seems every body has different ways of doing it. I have never heard that. I eat it by the spoonfuls. Some people use chemicals on it, that could have been why
