I love how the whole school really gets behind the team. I wish it were the same in England, but as a country we are more into football unfortunatley.

Lucas Green Rugby is still more popular in England than SA believe it was or not. Football is also still number one here too. Although there probably has been a gravitation to Rugby football after Siya Kholisi lifted Webby. Schoolboy Rugby is a different level though. Only the top schools private and gov play it though. There are also good sponsors in Schoolboy rugby tournaments and derby games. As well as TV coverage on Super Sport.

@@nice1256 in schools in England it's treated as a second rate sport a lot of the time. I feel like England is missing out on lots of great talent. Most athletic people will gravitate towards football in England. I think we are just starting to see a good representation of England from the younger guys in the squad. I hope by the next world cup the country can get behind them as SA did in 2019:)

@@averageyoutubeuser5537 because it's true lmao, genetically South Africa is nowhere in the tallest and heaviest of the world and when everyone take drugs (strongman) South Africa doesn't stand out. How many rugby player from South Africa going to Europe end up getting caught, in France 5/6 the last 3 years, even specialist from South Africa says its an issue about how poor the control are. Ralepelle didn't spend three months in France he got caught. The worst is, he got caught 3 times but none in South Africa, it was every time when he played in Europe, against Ireland at Dublin (with an other team mate) and 2 times in France. Same goes for like Dyantyi that couldn't play the world cup, they didn't see it until world association checked. And Goosen, and pienaar etc... Let's not talk about 95 The world has an heritage of farmer, that was the job of about 80% of the European. Europe made war for centuries every where. I played against Hilton College around 18 years ago, when they were touring Ireland. They beat us by 20 and seemed a very well-organised team, but the main thing I remember is how shocked they were at our basic facilities. They expected terraces and chanting fans, not the one man and his dog that turned up to watch us play.

Budding Boks! Love and loved schoolboy Rugby! Even with a team like Saints it was brill to watch when we could cause such upsets as a Pretoria Boys defeat under Jonathan Ross captaincy. Also beating St. John's at home after being 20 down at the break. I know oaks be lugging at me at this moment. But even tier two is entertainment mate! Loosing to Paul Roos by 40 points was an honorable thing! At least it wasn't 50 ;

I tell you this brings me so much pride in South African school boy rugby. I am 5 years out of Pretoria Boys High, the School at 2:20 who scored that beautiful try to beat Affies. I can still remember my debut at u/15E (Yes we had like 8 teams an age group in 2012) beating King Edward School, and being so sore I couldn't walk up the boarding house steps. We lost 108 - 0 to Grey Bloem later that year but I sure do miss this sport.

Respect to SA from NZ - always formidable tough and bully-ish from school boy up to Springbok level - always the benchmark for physicality - just part of the esp Afrikaaner psyche - Its different in NZ, the best NZ schools play a pragmatic game built on toughness, speed and skill and being well drilled and disciplined thats why the best schools in NZ are not usually the giant Island school 1st XVs lwho may be full of athletes natural talent and the giants but came up short at the very highest level, the ABs are never the biggest team in international rugby, England, SA, etc are almost always bigger but the ABs have the same strengths as the best NZ schools; mobility, toughness, highly skill, well-drilled, pragmatic players - this is a reflection of NZ's national charater and psyche too though this is changing and evolving as NZ evolves, I like the way the Irish, French and increasingly, other celtic teams play too, full of passion and fire, can lose by 50 points one day and can kill you the next dep on how they are feeling, England play like the world belongs to them and should bow down which is why we all hate losing to them, Ozzies are optimistic and glass half full, they win one game against the ABs and then think theyre the best thing since sliced bread, can never cont them out, Island teams play with alot of heart courage and pride and face burdens none of the other teams would dream of ever facing eg - having to pay their own fares to play for countries, having no gear to train with etc - Im a NZ raised Islander that grew up playing rugby
@gumdrops5572
@gumdrops5572 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it bully-ish as much as it about using what you have. Here in SA we are gifted with naturally big, strong and mobile players, so it would only make sense to use that to our advantage. Also, the intent behind our physicality is rarely to inflict pain out of malice, but generally serves a purpose of either generating go-forward on attack, or halting momentum on defense. It may seem like a simple, blunt approach to the game, but it's actually a remarkably astute and efficient tactic as it uses our best attributes to gain ascendancy in a game. The teams that have the best records against us (notably NZ) are teams that are able to either front up physically to halt our momentum, or use our sometimes predictable tactics to their advantage (Ireland in particular have been very good at this in recent years). If you look at successful SA teams, they generally have a very systematic approach to a game. With the kicking game, coupled with the physicality of especially the forwards being a "slow poison" (simply tiring the opposition team to the point of breaking). In most of these games it will be a tight affair until around the 60-minute mark, where the gradual breaking down of the opposition's energy levels leads to gaps opening up in the defense or simple lapses in concentration. You'll rarely see a strong SA team be all running from the start of the match (unless it serves the express purpose of gaining early ascendancy). This is also why we generally produce less superstars (with some exceptions of course) than NZ, for instance. Our players play within a system that's designed to break the opposition's game down, as opposed to simply overwhelming them with superior speed / skills (which we generally don't have, again with exceptions). When all of this comes together, you get games like the '07 and '19 WC Finals, where the opposition (England in both cases) simply get gradually stifled out of any scoring opportunities and have to take increasing risks to stay in the game, giving us more and more opportunities to score. On the flip-side, SA teams that have tried to embrace a more expansive (and consequently more individual-focused) game plan have been largely unsuccessful, with some exceptions. Case in point would be the Harry Viljoen era (early 2000's), and the Allister Coetzee era (famously leading to the 52-0 defeat to an incredible NZ team in 2017). Our players learn from an early age to play as part of a 15-man unit, as opposed to playing for personal glory. Of course this doesn't always pan out, as a rugby player in SA, you WILL be regularly reminded that you're only as good as the player next to you. At least, that's the theory behind it, the practice doesn't always hold true.
