technically because Spinal Tap has put out published recorded music, and done live shows, they are an actual band. similar to GWAR and Gorillaz, it's played for theatrics...but no one looks at Gorillaz and says "yep, a 2 dimensional character is really playing music rn. no orchestra or members of the Clash....it's just a total coincidence that the singer sounds EXACTLY like the dude from Blur" and no one sees a GWAR live show and thinks "they really just killed Donald Trump, and fed Joe Bidden to a space worm"...like it's an understood thing that these projects are taking the rock n roll tropes and elevating them theatrically to a point of high camp...even art in the truest sense. however, it is important to make the distinction that there is a difference between Spinal Tap the manufactured fake band for the mockumentary "This Is: Spinal Tap" and the REAL band Spinal Tap which was a marketing ply (strictly to sell the film, and retain IP rights) that has gotten....a little out of hand with how extreme the marketing push has gone. hey, William Castle could make a gimmick work, and lets not forget the storied history of The Monkees.

At this point in history, much like Citizen Kane, its genius is watered down by ironically how genius it was. SO much of the satirical style has seeped into every genre, and so much of the band's 'antics' have been rendered commonplace by the actual antics of bands and our increasing knowledge of said antics. Difference between seeing an airplane take off from the airport today and seeing the exact same thing 150 years ago.

Is Weird Al's band a "real band"? Spinal Tap are a real band -- and yes, they're a comedy act too. The Rutles weren't a real band, though they were funny. And when NPR's Terry Gross interviewed Mike Nesmith, her referring to The Monkees as "a band" brought Mike's correction: they were a situation comedy about a band. But Spinal Tap is a real band.
