Source: working on an image generation startup. Replicate (not sponsored but would love to be lol) is fantastic. It's very affordable and unbelievably powerful. As Cody alluded to, you can and should spend hours tweaking it, but the most powerful part to me is the ability to fine-tune models. Fine tuning means taking a base model and inputting training photos into it to get a specific thing out of it. For me, I upload 1-2 dozen training images of a car, and I can fine tune it on those models to get output images that include that car. For Pieter Levels, he fine tunes it on people's faces so that he can get photorealistic selfies of the input models in various environments. This is awesome because it lets you get the creativity and beauty from randomly generated environments and backgrounds while still maintaining a highly realistic likeness of a specific subject. (also so glad Cody and I are going through our GenAI arc at the same time)

yeah man, I've spent hours just playing around with prompting. I've tried training a model once and it worked ok. I think in my use case, I'd want to train a model for a "style" or lora, but I haven't had time to look into that. Flux / SDXL seem good enough for generating some images that look "creepy" enough.

I am working on my own project and have so many questions. 1. How do you approach the hosting costs. I am sure they increase dramatically if the site is getting heavy traffic. 2. How do you handle the API costs related to the AI model? 3. What database do you use? 4. Does the site get attacked regularly?
@WebDevCody2 ай бұрын
1. I host on a vps, and it’s typically a pretty flat rate of $3-5 per app. 2. I put a credit card for openai and it just charges the card based on usage. I put spend limits in place for safety 3. Postgres and convex 4. No, and I also put everything behind cloudflare

@Innesb2 ай бұрын
That’s strange; I’ve been using Cursor with Typescript this evening (literally for the last hour or so, during which time your message was posted). I’m using the Claude Sonnet 3.5 model. Having said that, Cursor was not working at all about 5-6 hours ago; I kept getting “couldn’t connect” message in composer, but it started working again a little later. It definitely wasn’t my connection; I was using other Internet services successfully. I was somewhat disappointed that I was unable to find a status page for Cursor.
@ZodakZach2 ай бұрын
im not sure all the features cursor has but i would look into a vscode extension called Continue that allows you to pick from various different models to use for like autocomplete and refactoring your code and understanding your codebase. i think its pretty similar to what cursor offers but just not as integrated of an experience as cursor and probably lacks some of the nice features but atleast typescript will work and u wont have to switch between editors because that sounds like a pain. and with continue u just have to pay the normal api cost of what ever model u use and pretty easy to set up.

I don't understand how you can run a local GPT. Wouldn't it need access to petabytes of information?
@WebDevCody2 ай бұрын
They have smaller models on hugging face. Some are 4gb, some 13gb, etc. the larger the model the better it performs. I don’t think a model requires petabytes. That’s only if you’re training the model
@ZodakZach2 ай бұрын
thats only for training the models, to run them you still need quite a bit of memory especially for like the state of the art models that have more parameters but there are smaller models trained for more specific tasks that you can run locally pretty easily
