If I had to go back to when I was a brand new blacksmith, I think this would be the first project I’d make.
Thanks so much for watching,
Matt

My first hammer eye punch was out of a harbor freight ballpeen, thing was pretty rad. But handle fitup is one of the more satisfying things in the process.

1045 does not have enough carbon to make an edged weapon. You should have forge welded a piece of high carbon into the cutting edge with a slot that is chiseled or cut in with a grinder. Oil quenching is a waste of time. Get some Cherry Red case hardening compound and use it. Simple, effective. If you had the high carbon cutting piece in then a quench would yield results. Forge On!!!

When you do the normalization cycles, how long do you let them cool down? Until you can hold it for each cycle? Until it loses its color(the color from heat that is) or is there a specific range? Thanks!! My first project like six months ago was a ball peen hatchet! It turned out pretty good. I found some much bigger ones so I’m hoping to make a big big one next!!

@@BrianRust89I was taught it needs to cool down until it has no color in a shadow. I think temp wise once it’s around 7-800 F you are good to go back in the fire! Definitely don’t have to wait til it’s cool enough to hold. The most important thing is one heat at orange (1650F), one at cherry red (1500F), and one at dull red (1350F). This way you normalize the steel as well as reduce the grain size. Small or tight grain gives you a significantly stronger blade!

@@BackyardBladesmithNJ steel baron’s 1080 HT sheet (for knives) calls for the same temps I believe (it’s what I use) soak for 10-15 minutes (I do 30 for large axe heads with antiscale compound) and says to cool until “black and magnetic”, (I do 650F) of course at the last cycle it’s gonna be magnetic the whole time. So what you said is prob about right for most carbon steels and I use it for carbon CV steels too like 80CrV2 and CruForgeV if anyone still happens to have that, actually dm me cuz I’ll buy it off youze
