China has never offered any of its flanker variants on the international arms market as a concession to Russia. Russia was also not completely blameless in the way the original Su27 deal fell apart, there was extreme tardiness and unreliability on their part in the period of 1996 to the early 2000s due to the collapse of the USSR.

This might be true, but Chine always try to manufacture everthing by itself. They even do it when their own product is more expensive then an import product with compareable quality. They do it simply becauce they try to keep the money and the whole chain of economic value in China. Trust me I work with people from China since more than 15 years. They buy at the beginning, but as soon as they identify a real nead or market, they instandly try produce it in China.

China and Flanker are completed each other, in one hand China aire force fill the gap of defence system before J10 and J20 come out, so they will not be complete defenceless for several years. (Also get the russian tech which was still consider advanced at that time). On the other hand, these deal really save the russian plane industry, it kept everything going in trouble time. Also Chinese user do giave a lot of valuable feedback about the technical details, eg. early Flanker's weak structure problem, these feedback also help the Russia to design and make Flanker better. A win-win situation for both.

The breadth of these programmes is remarkable, in this case this is leveraging an already remarkable airframe for more capability, notably China going down the F15E tandem config for the A2G role vs the side by side of Su-34, probably influenced by the Su-24 and F-111 of the 70s. This doesn't stop them from carrying on with more fundamental aircraft development. I suppose not sacrificing current capabilities whilst developing future aircraft Bravo another interesting post.
@WanderfalkeAT
@WanderfalkeAT 2 жыл бұрын
The Tandem Configuration limits Pilot to WSO interaction to Audio, while the Side by Side help's immensly with the Workload, Communication, Systems Management. The Su-34 and the Ka-52 are the way for Russia. Impressive Aircraft both of them. The only Downside with the Su-34 is the rear visibility, but they have a Toilet instead :)
@vickydroid
@vickydroid 2 жыл бұрын
@@WanderfalkeAT You might have to ask operational pilots about that, all I seem to recall was that from a study of side by side v tandem in a 60's or even 50s was that side by side was psychologically advantageous for the crew's willingness to undertake and complete missions in the nuke role. Other than that virtually all modern fast jet attack aircraft in the NATO Inventory are tandem or even single seat (go figure) in any case if you missed the point of China's appropriation of the Flanker airframe for systems upgrades, it minimises the design risk if you don't radically change the airframe, I daresay that without an SU-34 to hand to develop a side-by-side variant for marginal operational advantage designing a wholly new duck bill cockpit for their attack aircraft would have been a pain, they took the less radical path of the tandem configuration.

Dude. You are the best public domain aggregator of information on weapons systems I have seen on KZbin. Your detail and workmanship is impressive. Thanks for another deep dive into the fascinating world of Russian and Russian derived Fighter aircraft. If the training of the Chinese pilots and their tactics are worthy of this aircraft, the prospect of our fifth gen fighters facing a huge fleet of these and a significant number indigenous Chinese stealth fighters for intelligence and targeting is kind of frightening. I still have confidence that our Air Force and Navy can deal with them, but we may see some serious casualties in numbers we have not faced since Viet Nam. And the Chinese will have enough numbers to absorb significant casualties and still pose a threat.

J-11D has been under test for years and maybe we'll never produce them. Since a 4++gen fighter using 5th gen avionics can't be much cheaper than a 5th gen fighter and its air superiority capacity can never match a real 5th fighter. The fact is we choose to directly put J20 into mass production. Btw, the reason why keep producing 4++gen J16s is that they are multi-role, having great payload, and are suitable for intercepting and long-range CAP missions because they have double seat, just like F15EX. A good parter of J20s.

Central lifting body layout? And the very effective side strip wing design? The flanker series has very good maneuverability at subsonic speeds, but the airplane is very large and falls into a "trap" at supersonic speeds. The Flanker has poor roll performance and the airframe structure is not strong enough. The latest su35s and j16 got rid of it by changing materials and redesigning the aircraft.

SU-27 components were found to be inconsistent from batch to batch, so much so that they had to make it themselves just to get consistency. By then, they found they have LOT OF ROOM to improve....just by getting the base line consistent. ( a few thing they can now tune ) Electronics from China were already ahead of Russia, hence changing to better radar is a given. I wonder if Russia bought the J11 AND THEN REVERSE engineered it,....would Russian industry also improved ?? Oh well, this is how I wrote it back then Vasily looked up at chief Wu over his shoulder with an uneasy expression and said:" so... this is not just a localised 27?" And cheif Wu just shook his head while still bending down over the cockpit and his arm placed on the front frame:" no captain... this is a J11D... but trust me , it's far better than what you have in mind..." Vasily leaned back on the seat and gritted his teeth:" it suddenly sounds like a bad idea to take this out for a combat patrol right off the bat..." Chief Wu said:" no worries captain, all the damage has been repaired, even the seat is a whole new one..." Vasily looked up at him again:" that's not my... alright, I need a marker, and some paper tape... oh and, don't tell me this thing doesn't have any settings for interface markings other than chinese..." Wu answered while already climbing down the ladder:" I have that flash memory somewhere if I can find it, I'msure it wasn't on the cargo plane that aliens shut down on our way down here... it won't take more than a couple of hours captain..."

@@Millennium7HistoryTech a small portion from one of my more original ideas for a scifi novel, currently shelved and eating dust, mainly because back then my understanding of air combat and technology was criminaly miniscule so now that I have access to much better sources I rather do much more study on it, these days there is DCS, and some amazing channels like yours or aircraft interviews, or fighter pilot podcast etc that I draw information from, when I feel confident that I have a proper picture I sure should get back to it... Basic idea is, around our current time in a slightly alternative history aliens invade earth and our hero, one captain Vasily "Kurshan" Pupov, a Su57 pilot stationed at Kamchatca gets caught in the air by the first wave of air battles aliens launch to secure their planet fall, then there is a journey all the way across the Asia so he can join what's left of soviet troops on the European side of things, I wrote it as far as Kyrgyzstan but that's as far as it ever flew 😉 it must end up somewhere between the things my god of military novels Tom Clancy writes and the character driven story telling of ace combat series... or so I hope it does...

I think the J-20 has taken over as the premier fighter since the cost to produce the J-11D is similar to that of the J-20, it makes no sense to produce the J-11D.

Chinese military exports are ramping up fast. Watch for when China exports military drone swarm systems. Look at DJI’s $14,000 M30K drone including excellent optics, night vision, precision lat long target mapping, Laser range finding and laser designator. Now add multiple specialized drones including snipers, shaped charge guided munition release and suicide drones with coordinated operations quickly dominating many square km in 1 predawn hour. For the price Germany is paying for one F35 ($240 million each when including everything but consumables and future upgrades), China will be able to offer 17,000 militarized drones comparable to the M30K.

Drabble. The J-11D is a dead program with 1-2 jets converted as prototypes for a failed new-production upgrade (similar to the Su-35) centered around a lightweight, composite, airframe which never passed the Chinese defense ministry cost:benefits analysis. The jet was to be an 'ultimate evolution' response to beat the Golden Eagle F-15C but with the demise of that program, the emphasis has instead shifted to a much lower standard MLU known as J-11BG, as China is leaving the Flanker series itself in the rear view mirror, intending to use them as cheap, on-hand, fill aircraft in hastening the replacement of J-7 and J-8 interceptors with a standardized (maintenance and training) followon reserve fighter, while they shift their own, primary production, effort to home-grown, Gen-5, designs. The J-11BG will probably have an AESA at some point, however; based on the pitot radome, it is presently still a Zhuk derived mechanical array driven primary sensor airframe. This, by itself, makes it non-competitive in a stealth driven threat scenario of area defense against B-2/B-21/F-35 strikes on deep infrastructure. It will have to be vectored by GCI as a supplement to long range HQ-9/S-400 SAMs. The J-16 is the F-15EX equivalent, right down to the MAWS/SAIRST chisel fairings on the forward fuselage with the emphasis shift being towards continued production of the J-10C for Cross Strait actions in the next 5 years, backed by a much larger fleet (current estimates, 300+) of J-20 for the high end as a strike platform to destroy Taiwanese IADS/ADGE elements in the opening rounds of a massive DEAD effort to allow for followon precision OBAS by conventional fighters, in support of airlanded troops. These then seizing an SPOD to enable rapid invasion reinforcement without populating an invasion anchorage or crossing a white water threshold to push Chinese Marines ashore. It (J-20) may also act as an ASST scout for the carrier response. Targeting long range anti-ship missiles from subs and ships as well as aircraft. The Flanker has limited utility as survivability in either role and the PLAN/PLAAF know it. J-11D had a Type 1245 integrated AESA with sidelooking arrays in a resculpted nose with electronically fenestrated, sealed, integral radome. It had a WS-10C derived engines with WS-15 technology from the J-20. It had an enlarged, dual-band, SFPA, IRST, atop a larger fuselage fairing (better cryo-cooler). It was to integrate PL-15 and PL-10 from the start with options for PL-xx and PL-21. It had an entirely new RFS suite, similar to that of the ALQ-250 EPAWSS. All of which has basically been transitioned to the J-16 with it's much simpler (Type 1248 with repositioner) radome and more general, multirole/escort jammer (J-16D) mission in support of H-6 bombers bringing long range YJ-12 or even DF-17 air launch BASM to kill carriers in the SCS and maybe even Yokosuka. The J-11D could not do that because it doesn't have the second seat to run the systems. The J-16 on the other hand _can_ do the J-11D's missileer/Anti-AWACS mission (PL-XX is 21ft long), at range, because it already has an AAR probe. If you are going to sell unique SME insight, then at least offer new information and correct details. Selling the 'Ultimate Flanker is Chinese' as a title with a thumbnail picture of a J-11D and then providing only a generic rundown of _other_ types in PLAAF service is literal Wiki Wanking bait and switch, not informative. @@holystatic I actually think the J-11D is not the EW variant of J-11, as EW needs to be twin seat while J-11D is single seat. It’s prob an air superiority variant, like the Su-35, but it was dropped in favor of J-20 and the older J-11B were upgraded to bring some specs to the J-11D instead.
