I go around Marsabit to buy some food supplies for my next ride, and I go to try my first nyama choma, definitely the very best food you can find in Kenya.

🤣🤣tuko wengi bro. I used to listen to stories from my uncle who was a driver for Posta back in the 80s about how wild, dry and harsh Marsabit, Moyale, Lodwar, Mandera and all those other small Northeastern Province towns were na bado sijakanyaga huko even today. My uncle was a legend of the road having driven all around Africa form SA all the way to Lagos all the Congos , Zambia and Zimbabwe back in the 80s.He was even part of the service/chase crew of the Safari Rally and he drove everywhere like he was in a rally. Once his vehicle gearbox failed out in the bush in Lodwar and he could only drive in reverse. He drove from Lodwar to Kapenguria in reverse. took a whole day na shingo karibu ikatike.He had hundreds of such stories and pictures too.

As a Kenyan married to an Ethiopian, I never knew that there are parts of Kenya where one can be mistaken to think that they are in Ethiopia because of the music being played around the shopping centres, the environment plus the locals resemble Ethiopians. Marsabit looks very organised Town.

The media tends to paint a horrid picture of Africa - many get pleasantly shocked when they visit countries like Kenya. I've seen expatriates and missionaries crying when they have to go back to their countries. On the other hand, the media also tends to paint a fantastic picture of the so-called developed countries - I was shocked to witness homelessness and abject poverty in Europe and the USA on my tours there, wow ... what an eye opener that was.
@lauras9966

I love this video. It really shows the intertwining of border peoples, mixed nationalities, Ethio-Kenyan, music from Ethiopia with Kenyan dishes and juice, again a shared liking. Theyre all sweet toothed! It just goes to show how seamless humanity is and the faultines are just really constructs. Still economically the country seems more organised. I heard the Kenyans are I think investing in partnerships with Ethiopian telecoms. The microfinancing instruments they have would be so beneficial in Ethiopia especially in remote areas. They deserve the best. Peace development and safe trade.

Yes, the company is called SafariCom. They got a license to operate in Ethiopia - massive growth opportunities for the company and Ethiopia. They'd already opened an office and trained the locals, but the civil war disrupted their activities, but I think everything is back on track now. Imagine sending money to the remotest parts of Ethiopia with no internet, just a cell signal, pay for services, shopping etc right from anywhere in the world - you could do shopping for your old grandma, pay school fees wherever you are in the world. No bank account needed, just a basic cheapo cell phone. It's incredible! Of course, the infra structure needs to exist, and the system needs to be acceptable by everyone as a medium of payment.

I love your knowledge on so many areas...i havent heard a lot of inaccurate things about Kenya...the lady just wanted you to buy her soda 😂green stuff is sukuma wiki(i think collard greens). You can buy a Safaricom line and access MPESA. I dont think we can call Marsabit a city should be a town.
@lucywanjohi2974
@lucywanjohi2974 11 ай бұрын
I am glad you are enjoying Kenya. Can I point out a few things? That first lady who was saying 'soda' was asking you to buy from her, not that she wanted 'soda' in order to be in camera. About the barbecue, I really doubt that you were eating the goat with its skin. We do not do that in Kenya unless it is something I have never heard of. I think it is just nicely barbecued so it is crunchy on the outside but moist on the inside. Can you imagine chewing hide? About paying by Mpesa, as a foreigner you can use your passport to buy a local sim card. It is cheap and could be a good thing since it looks like you will be on the Kenya stretch for a long time now that you are still in the northern part of the country. All the best. Your channel has become my newest YT sensation.

Well said, Lucy, on all counts - thanks for setting the record straight for this guy and pointing out about Mpesa accessibility to foreigners. He was enjoying the results of slowly barbecued goat meat. May I also point out that when they go back home, they can still use the Safaricom lines (cheap roaming) to make transactions with businesses and people in Kenya and make /receive calls! It's better to have a dual SIM smartphone for this.

MPESA is very much accessible to tourists, you just need to buy a sim card, register with your passport, and you get to use MPESA straight away. That's readily available to tourists coming through airports... The region you entered Kenya has historically been marginalized and so lags far behind in terms of development and, hence, most of the challenges you are facing. But with devolution and equalization funds in place, they're slowly catching up with the rest of the country.
