Crosscode is an underrated gem, one of the best indies I've ever played.

I love this game so much! Definitely one my all time favorites. There is something that stuck out to me as really interesting that I kinda wish you mentioned a bit more: One of the more unique things about this game is it's attention to detail for the sake of immersion and realism. Not just in it's dialogue, background characters and quests but also in it's gameplay mechanics. Like you mentioned it's an offline mmo, and in an mmo you can usually duel people, CrossCode has a character that will frequently challenge the protagonist to a duel. This duel, despite being offline against an NPC feels exactly like how a PvP battle with this combat system would feel like. The opponent uses all the same abilities you could be using, and the AI actually tries to adapt to your playstyle, making them progressively more challenging if you play too repetitively. In my first playthrough, when I got to the first battle, I took the first round and then got destroyed on all subsequent rounds. By the time I got to my next battle though, I got better at the game. I got more familiar with the mechanics and improved my combat skills. I won all the other duels from that point on, but still, never in a landslide. I always lost one or two rounds, and the whole thing stayed challenging throughout. Cool thing is, unless you manually reload a save, there isn't a game over for not winning. The game counts and remembers the outcome of whether or not you win that fight. Obviously you're not "expected to win" but you're not expected to lose either. It's a PvP. Things will only go as well as your ability to play the game allow it to go. This makes it feel a lot more immersive and rewarding than such interactions are in most other games. Because the fight is really hard, but the opponent can only do whatever you can, so it's up to you to be better than them. It's very challenging but all the way through feels very fair too as a result.

I bought this game and finished it in 2020. Later I came back to it in 2021 for the post game DLC, that was released on PC by that time. I have 101.3 hours on steam: I really enjoyed the story (with some VERY good plot twists here and there), the music, the characters and the beautiful graphics. To me one of the best indie games I have ever played. Only thing I was not good at were some very difficult puzzles; I needed to search on KZbin for the solution.

This game is criminally unknown. I played it because it had great reviews on steam and proceeded to spend about 80 hours taking my time and enjoying all it had to offer. It was so good I just jad to buy it again for the switch and yeah it doesnt run so good on switch but I still love being able to share this game with with friends who I think would like it. Compelling story with emotional and funny moments, great pixel art, fantastic combat and music and puzzles that feel extremely memorable. Please do yourself a favour and give this game a go.

Really is an amazing game with a crazy good plot. They nailed the MMO feel of the world. Loved how you could sometimes cheese a puzzle with a well placed shot. Surprised how well they nailed jumping puzzles in a pixel isometric. Music was great. Fun characters. Glad you made this video cause I wish more people would play it. Almost nothing about this game appealed to me from the get go; I usually lean away from pixel graphics and puzzle heavy games but I was totally blown away by how good it was.

Anytime I hear people tout something as the best thing ever, my immediate thought is "what toxic and narcissistic message is this gonna spread," and aside from suffering from human-sue syndrome, this game gives us another message about how it's okay if humans cause pain and suffering to others, but it's wrong if other creatures do it to us.

The beginning is very long and underwhelming. I am not even sure what’s going on. I hate games that drag on before the main plot starts or a setting like “this is all fake. It’s a game within a game.” It really kills immersion.
@VKsChannel2 ай бұрын
Just keep going this game stars slow but it will only get better the more you play it
@torinsmith986710 ай бұрын
I feel like the only person who played this for dozens of hours and didn't like it. I got to around the snowy mountain area, I think? The enemies were incredibly bullet spongy, they dropped only the smallest amount of upgrade currency, and so it became a sloggish grind to improve or else fight monsters that would one-shot me. Totally awful. This was many many years ago though, maybe they've made a balance pass.
@VKsChannel10 ай бұрын
Give it another try and as I've said in the video the beginning is slow and you must put your circuit points on your attack stats at first By the end of the second temple the game will be much more enjoyable You'll have plenty of combat skills and your damage will be higher The story is also very engaging at this point
@dominiccasts10 ай бұрын
The one thing about the game that's a bit hard to grasp at first is that equipment matters way more than character level, and you'll either need money or enemy & plant drops to get equipment. You can buy or craft equipment for the area in the nearest town. Also you don't have to fight enemies when you go through an area, only a handful of enemy types aggro you if you don't touch them. This is especially important when going through Bergen Trail the first time since the town is at the end of it. The tricky part at the start of the game is that you go straight from Autumn's Rise through Bergen Trail without hitting many vendors, since the first set of vendors are all in Rookie Harbor where you start out, and while there are some at the start of Bergen Trail they don't sell much. It's definitely a game that expects you to be going back and forth between the towns and the fields between them, though if you set out to complete quests, that tends to happen naturally (and sometimes you get good gear there too). General rule IME is that if your equipment level is about the same as the enemy levels (hold the item wheel to check) you should be able to kill them in a few hits. If not, buy or craft better gear.
@Galbalan10 ай бұрын
By popular demand, CrossCode actually has a built-in difficulty scaling option btw: you can lower the received damage and enemy attack frequency as well as puzzle speed right in the options menu. And if you get into download mods, there's a mod that can adjust enemy HP scale and the timing windows. And there are cheat mods to adjust xp and credit multipliers, among many other things like solving puzzles instantly. (Haven't tested the puzzle solving one yet.)
@AshEshyr7 ай бұрын
As you get furthr into the game, finding enemies "break" points and weaknesses becomes more and more important and you cant really force through those encounters. I think this part of the game isn't the best explained because of how break mechanics are different for basically every enemy. Nothing in the game *needs* to be sloggish or a grind but if you don't experiment or find out the different ways to tackle different enemy types, i can see how someone would be frustrated with it. There is an infamous enemy later in the game with a very convoluted break mechanic that is an actual requirement to beat that enemy and i know tons of people express frustration with it because it's not explained, and the only way to learn it is by experimenting and following somewhat obscure visual cues. My best tip for it is to watch how your party members fight certain enemies, because often times they will be programmed to exploit break mechanics.
@davidvasquezgarcia95217 ай бұрын
...I think those enemies are the ones supposed to be hit from other angle than the front to damage them properly. That's part of the combat system: adapt to your enemy and not try to defeat them all doing the same thing
@williamtael837910 ай бұрын
Those characters look so bad in terms of design and "badassness", but the game looks so good overall. The only thing I don't like is the skill tree, with its TES Oblivion-like attributes.
