I add gated reverb just enough to fatten and widen the snare, without adding enough to make the snare duration sound longer. Then, I add ambience reverb to the gated reverb returns.

I think the important lesson here is that, in a world full of digital reverb options, it’s nice to have a piece of hardware that actually limits the optional parameters.

I've been using a SPX900 for my guitar rig since the '90s. It is a multi-FX like unlimited SPX90s that can be stacked, saved, and recalled. I've always loved the sound of Yamaha equipment, from the DX7 to the PM2000 to their grand pianos.

I worked thoughout the late 70s, 80s and 90s and its good to see that the spx is still doing its thing...for young engrs like yourself. Class never dies. But if you want to really check out reverb. Rev 7 is all you need.

I used many an SPX90 in my 30 year live career. I carried four because they were so versatile. Killer gated drum preset, by the way. When descending into the clubs I always stored my presets in the 60 bank. I would return a year or so later and they'd still be there! The main failure mode is in the sealed power supply. After ten years or so the sealant would become conductive and the unit would fail. Glad to see two still in good shape. Alternatives are the REV5, SPX900*, SPX990 (lots of pre and post alternatives) and the SPX2000 (pricey). The 2000 has all the old 90 presets in a special bank with neat display color changes! 900's seem to be very nicely priced currently. All the goodness of the 90 with wide-band long delays and the swell "white room" preset......

I really like drums that sound big and spacious with a generous amount or reverb. Maybe it’s because my frame or reference is the 80’s gated reverb as that was so fashionable when I was a toddler hearing pop records in the late 80’s. I feel that some 90’s drums sound a lot more flat in some cases (depends a bit on the genre). I wish I could record my own drum kit, as it sounds really harsh in my attic room where it’s crammed into a tight corner. What I’ve always wondered about is how to keep the sounds separated with the different mics. Drumkits must be the most difficult accoustic instrument to record with all those rattles and sqeaking noises from the paddles.

Great drum reverb tip! Shorter reverb than normal, but with a longer decay on the band with harsher mid frequencies => Gives the drumkit more impact and energy! - So awesome Wytse!!!

That reverb has its own characteristics. Nothing is perfect, but each and everyone is unique. That worked on the snare drum really well. Awesome! My dad bought a zoom guitar pedal with small speakers (like 2inch speakers maybe) and I used it and it sounds unique. It didnt sound great plugged to an amp but it works well. ✌

Those drums sound gorgeous! What I wouldn't give to have that kind of quality as a starting point. The toms sound perfect. After learning how to really use Pro-R, I haven't used any other reverbs except some UAD verbs with an Apollo for live performances. Every reverb I've ever used had some tonal quality that I didn't like. Pro-R lets me make the exact reverb I wan't and my only complaint is that they don't have a keyboard across the bottom. I love to adjust my reverb EQ to empasise frequencies that are in the key of the song. It's a subtle beautification. That Yamaha unit does sound great on the snare, though! How does it sound on other things?

Alesis Microverb is another underrated vintage gadget. Technically it may be poor, but it has a number of very smart and crazy presets (you can adjust very little). A plugin with the full algorithm would be exciting. In a technically clean but cold mix, it might bring in a lot of "dirt", and in quite complex sounding ways.

I know this is 2 years old, but I can't recommend the free Longsound Microverb VST enough. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the real unit but, ever since I got the plugin, I've used it extensively for my tom and snare verbs (Large 5 and Gate 2 are my faves). It has a certain dark, metallic sounding character that I've come to love. Sadly, it's only 32 bit.

@shogunai
@shogunai 5 жыл бұрын
The fact they have ADC/DAC circuits. But in all honesty there are fantastic VST reverbs out there and with a bit of knowhow you could easily create a very very close approximation of the Yamaha verb he is going on about.
@gregg_msk
@gregg_msk 5 жыл бұрын
@@shogunai Yeah, I know, but still wondering... To me, the biggest pain is that plastic muddiness, when you send to the reverb something percussive or with the sharp attacks . You'll get a lot of noise\plastic\sand. You can use some EQ with hi shelf until that mud will dissappear, but by that moment the sound becomes too muffled. The best way to me to get a clean and natural\musical reverb is to remove attacks, but I don't know how to do this quick. The best results you get if you send a copy of your signal with some volume automation(smothing transients), but it is too time consuming. I tried to put Transient Designer before the reverb but it did not help too much. So it is interesting to me how are the things with the hardware reverbs meaning this aspect.
