One of the artists that I feel most privileged to have seen live. Rory did it his way and never compromised.

This is from 1979 at the Montreax Jazz Festival. I have this on DVD. The whole performance is great. This is his opening song. If you liked this one then check out his closing song, Shadowplay from the same show. It's a great performance. The bass player is Jerry McAvoy. He has been Rory's bassist for most of his solo career. The drummer is Ted McKenna. He played for years with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band before joining Rory. Seen him twice, in 82 and 91. The second time I saw him Slash was in the VIP section. Rory brought him out for one of his encores and they jammed on a couple of Chuck Berry tunes. It was pretty awesome.

As Donna said: He totally kills it. His Stage Struck live album from 1980 are phenomenal. Songs like Shinkicker, Wayward Child, Brute Force & Ignorance, The Last Of The Independents and Shadow Play. That trio rocked.

It felt like he was one of your mates when you went to see him. His acoustic picking is amazing too. I really your enjoyed your reaction. You might enjoy him doing Pistol Slapper Blues, it is on Youtue.

Rory passed away in 1995. That Fender Stratocaster he played was the guitar he played throughout his career. The paint peeled away because Rory had a rare blood group that made his sweat very acidic. That guitar was recently sold at auction in London for £889,400 ($1,156, 793).

The British indie guitarist Johnny Marr later declared he knew he was in the presence of genius when he saw Rory change a guitar string WITHOUT stopping playing. It was relentless touring that made him fit for purpose and he never compromised. There was no danger he was suddenly going to do a disco album; whatever the merits of that form.

Rory Gallagher was born in The Rock Hospital, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, Ireland as his father was working on building a dam to generate electricity for the county. Rory Gallagher was arguably the greatest guitarist of his generation and perhaps of all time.

This whole concert at Montreux was fabulous, but Rory never did a bad concert (until he was ill). I'd argue that some of the Irish Tour performances are just as good, along with the Rockpalast (Germany) or the Old Gray Whistle Test (UK). He was on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the Midnight Special here in the US. IMO, any live performance, especially in the 70s, is going to be good. I was privileged to see Rory a number of times throughout the 70s and never saw a bad show. His beat up 61 Strat he's playing here is going up for auction on 10/17/24, with an estimated sale price of $1 million. Personally, with all the guitarists like Sir Brian May, Slash, The Edge, just to name a couple, I think that guitar is going to go for considerably more than that. Once you start listening to Rory, you'll find yourself really enjoying that rabbit hole. I'd suggest "A Million Miles Away" or "Bad Penny" as a next listen, as well as "Going to My Hometown," In the last song, you see that his energy is contagious no matter what he was playing.

Thanks James and ladies for excellent video. I am thinking of Tenacious D, and their song "Tribute", for they could not play the best song in the world, and IMO this is not the best live Rory video, for I would go for "Shadow Play", from Montreux 1979, the same brilliant concert that "Shin Kicker" was taken from.

You are welcome ladies.... like I told you in my intro, this man makes all the rest look like amateurs..... his world tours filled coliseums, there were even riots in Greece, when a bunch of people were turned away..... at the Isle of wight, there were naked chicks rushing the stage, his band TASTE made Hendrix look like an amateur. Hendrix got heckled, and Rory had naked chicks running up on the stage....
@user-dh5bnafe4bАй бұрын
You'll be saying that he invented the electric guitar next.😊 At least you didn't bung in the old "Hendrix said RG was the greatest guitarist" myth.
@jameswagoner3309Ай бұрын
@@user-dh5bnafe4b I don't have to..... if you've ever seen the Isle of Wight concert, you'll hear quite succinctly that Hendrix was getting heckled, whilst Rory Gallagher and Taste had naked women jumping up on stage with him... Jimi Hendrix's set was dismal, while Taste ruled the day....... it's just a fact.
@user-dh5bnafe4bАй бұрын
@jameswagoner3309 You say it's a "fact" that Taste ruled the day at the IOW Festival because Hendrix was sub-par on that day? How very strange since Taste played at the IOW Festival on Friday, 28th August 1970, while Jimi Hendrix played in the early morning of August 31st . He wasn't at his best, there was clearly something not right with him. He died three weeks later. Then of course, there's Chicago who actually did play on the same day as Taste and which act was better is a matter of opinion, not a fact. The guitarist who could make Terry Kath look like an amateur has never been born. All those naked women though - I've no idea how that equates to musical talent in your fevered imagination. I am a Rory Gallagher fan myself BTW, just not a delusional one. 😊
@jameswagoner3309Ай бұрын
@@user-dh5bnafe4bexcept you are a delusional one, it is a fact Jimi Hendrix got heckled, and taste got a resounding ovation, and had naked women rushing the stage.... you're not only delusional, you're in denial...... pull your head out, Jimi Hendrix ain't all that, he had lots of those bad days, I have never seen a bad Rory Gallagher day.
@jameswagoner3309Ай бұрын
@@user-dh5bnafe4bI think your imagination is fevered..... crowd reaction is a pretty good testimonial to the talent of the musician.... pull your head out. Jimi Hendrix was not all that..... Rory Gallagher was the total package, and never put on a bad show, not that anyone has ever seen anyway.... he was also much more prolific than Jimi Hendrix..... Jimi Hendrix was nothing but hype. Watch him sometime on the archival footage of his interview on The Dick Cavett Show..... I understand that you're a fanboy, but sometime you have to come to the reality of the situation. I saw Rory Gallagher back in 74, I had been playing guitar for 2 years at the time, I saw him at a very small club in Schaumburg Illinois... the club was owned by Danny Seraphine the drummer for Chicago... after the show I wanted to throw my guitar away and choose another instrument.
