Glad you found the best kept secret in music, Rory was the greatest guitar player, but never got the recognition he deserved.

Well, in Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands and in Germany he had many fans and I am sure that almost every bluesrock lover knew his name and recognized him. In my humble opinion the adoration of some of the pop- and rockstars is far too exaggerated. Having said that, I attended 5 Rory Gallagher concerts, so at least I knew to appreciate him :-).

Rory is one of the greatest guitarist ever! I saw him 3 times, and he killed every show! Take a listen to 'Going To My Hometown', where he kills it on the mandolin, and perhaps 'Catfish Blues' from his days when he was 18 years old in a band called Taste! You'll love them both! Wonderful reaction to the legendary Rory Gallagher (pronounced Gall-a-her).This was a clip from the documentary "Irish Tour '74", recorded while Rory performed in Ireland, including Northern Ireland, during the Troubles, when no other artists would dare hold a show in Belfast. Fascinating story. Try checking out some later live pieces with clearer recordings, such as pieces from any Rockpalast show, the "Rock Goes to College" performance, the 1984 Belfast show, the 1977 Hammersmith Odeon show or the acoustic "Me and My Music" performance from the BBC. All have some great pieces. Please check out more from this incredibly talented musician, who was also a decent human as well.

Seen Gallagher five or six times and had a mutual friend in Roland Van Campenhout (a Belgian Blues-rocker who knew Rory's brother well), through which I had the chance to chat with Rory; the first time as a snotty-nosed kid of fifteen at the 1976 Bilzen Jazz festival in Belgium. Talked with Rory again, backstage at the 1981 Reading Rock Festival in England, armed with some pints of Lager. Gallagher was one of the most friendly guys you could find. Very approachable and open for a chat about most things you can think of. Soft-spoken, witty, with a great sense of humor and a boy-ish charm that attracted quite a few people of the female variety. Though I never saw him take advantage of it, on the several occasions I met him. He also remembered me the second time we met, which made me like him even more. And to finish, Jimi Hendrix was once asked how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world, and Hendrix replied: "I don't know, you'd have to ask Rory Gallagher...".

One of the top guitarists ever! Multi-talented and every show was full of energy. He updated a lot of classic blues as well as wrote his own. Audio mixes from the 70s can be difficult. A Million Miles Away is a favorite, and live Bullfrog Blues shows off the talents of Lou Martin (keyboards), Gerry McAvoy (bass), and Rod D'Ath (drums). This is from the Irish Tour--and he was about the only performer that would go to Northern Ireland during the Troubles. His gear is going to auction October 2024, and there is a real movement to get his battered 61 Strat back to Cork City, Ireland. Some of my favorites are from his first album, and I'm not sure I've seen any of them live here on the KZbins--For the Last Time and I Fall Apart.

I was introduced to Rory's music by an old schoolmate, also the sax player in our first band, whose father was from the same county in Ireland. It's pronounced Gal-a-her, btw, the guy who announced them gets it right, I usually forget. 'Bullfrog Blues' is generally my first thought when I hear his name. I saw him numerous times in the 70s in Toronto. Great entertainer, musician. In 1976 I bought a guitar amp from a guy who used to live with Lou Martin, Rory's keyboardist, Rory gave it to him, it was destroyed in a fire later that year along with most of my belongings. Anyway, great performance, cool reaction, though the difficulty understanding the words may just have been his enunciation, y'know, the bluesy, southern inflections adopted by many artists involved in the worldwide popularization of music from America that America had dismissed and marginalized as "race music". Watched an old Black Sabbath video of 'War Pigs' yesterday that also had two mics(mikes =microphones) joined with electrical tape, as here, not duct tape. Maybe one mic for a TV, radio or other separate feed. It's fine, even if it looks odd, it was representative of solutions to fit the situation at the time. ✌🏼😊🎶❤🍁❤️✨️🕊 Rest In Peace, Rory 🇮🇪 🎸🎵

Jimmy Hendrix was once asked by a journalist how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. Hendrix answered that he didn’t know and that they had to ask Rory Gallagher that question. You don’t see it so well in the video but that guitar he is using is used a lot. It looks like it has been found on a dumpster. If I remember correctly that guitar will be auctioned off in October this year. It is one of the most recognizable guitars there is and will cost the one that buys it more than a million dollars.
@jameswagoner33093 ай бұрын
That is because Rory Gallagher was voted by other musicians in Melody Maker magazine, as the world's best rock guitarist for a few years in a row. It looks like Jimi Hendrix was snubbed I guess....
@runedahl14773 ай бұрын
@@jameswagoner3309 I think Hendrix was just being sarcastic. All these voting about who is best guitar player is just a bunch of baloney. I saw that Taylor Swift was voted number eight in one of these votings. With all respect to Taylor Swift and her music I think I can come up with at least 100 guitarist that are better than her. Usually the ones that are listed are famous persons but famous is not the same as being the best. Let me give you one example. Have you ever heard of Danny Gatton? Probably not. He was also called “The Humbler” because a lot of more famous musicians walked off stage with red faces after having had a gig with him and understood that he had outperformed them. Unfortunately he committed suicide when he was on the bring of real fame so the big audiences never hear of. Hendrix was brilliant and innovative but there are so many others that are the same and play a different category of music.

Rory had a rare blood type which was acidic and his sweat caused the paint to come off his Strat. That's what gave it the beat up look.
@runedahl14773 ай бұрын
@@williambevins I know that his sweating was the reason why the guitar looked so beat up but still he must have played on it for thousands of hours. I did not know that he had a special blood type. A guitar sounds better the more you play on it and it starts to loosen after more than 1000 hours. I heard about a guy that inherited a crap brand guitar from an uncle that passed away. This uncle had been a lifelong member of the Salvation Army and had used the guitar for probably 30 years or so. It sounded lovely on the typical Salvation Army cords like D,G,E,A and C, but if you tried to play more advanced jazz chords you could clearly hear that this was not a top of the line guitar.
@williambevins3 ай бұрын
@@runedahl1477 The first time I saw him he had the old strat with him and he also had a second white strat that he played. Years later when I saw him again he still had the old strat but this time he had a telecaster as his second guitar. I think he uses different tunings and that's why he switched guitars. You are right. The old strat sounded phenomenal live.
