It's funny, having watched this series through so far, I can now instantly tell when it's a British game because of that weird warbly high pitch part of the music that every British game seems to have. I can't unhear it now.
@JaspertineАй бұрын
In music terms, it's called an arpeggio. In practice, it involves taking a chord and playing the notes individually (think House of the Rising Sun by The Animals). The British games make those sounds by playing arpeggios at crazy fast speeds in order to play chords, because otherwise a single chord would take up all of the NES sound channels.

As a kid (we're talking around 5 or 6), I vaguely remember a game where the main character was going through some kind of pyramid-looking space, and then transitioning to some kind of outdoor area that vaguely looked like the exterior of an airship or some giant vehicle. I could never figure out DECADES later what it was. I never got past that area (or my brother or whoever was playing couldn't), and it stuck with me. I did have suspicions that it was probably Strider, given how I sort of remember what the main character looked like, but I don't think it was until watching this gameplay and hearing the music that I could finally confirm that yes, it was NES Strider.

Think I got it at an early Christmas; I remember my mom got me The Ultimate Stuntman and a Dizzy game from the Home Shopping Network, and I played Stuntman all the time. Loved the music, and the idea of it being several games in one. I won't go so far as to say the game was amazing, but I immediately got hit in the nostalgia as soon as I saw the title screen!

I did not remember NES Strider being so much like Rygar, Bionic Commando or Duck Tales with the whole search and return mechanic. I guess it was a way of getting a lot of game time from little assets. And I can really respect what it was trying for, all the while being very happy that game logic today is often very different.

Very excited to see where Strider is going to end up. Great game, but it's also incredibly busted just about everywhere, so I predict one of two things. It's either top 10, or it's around the 200s. I'm glad I'm not the scientist here, because this is a tricky thing to figure out.

You give DuckTales a lot more credit than it deserves for going back to levels with new routes. You get sent back to Transylvania twice and neither time is voluntary. That's about it for that kind of thing in the whole game. Good game, but the level select mechanisms are inconsequential.

NES Strider was the first Strider I ever played, too, and I have the same nostalgic soft spot for it even though it's objectively pretty terrible. A weird tidbit: The reason it's so narratively different from the 'main' Strider series is that it's based off of a manga that was comissioned and codeveloped alongside it. The manga was never released in America. The game was never released in Japan. Isn't that weird?

I don't think I've ever seen the NES version of Smash TV before. I thought it looked pretty respectable. The music wasn't that bad, but the sound effects were a bit repetitive. They got some of the voice samples, and I've heard a lot worse. I think if you used the two controllermode, and used two advantages or joystick controllers, this port is kind of impressive.

strider, despite it's bugs, is still one of my favorite games of the NES, it was so cool and unique for the time with all the 'rpg' mechanics combined with metroidvania exploration, the unfortunately very limited storytelling, and also the pretty player-friendly casual difficulty level + easy continuing.. very well designed IMO, altho obviously let down by the shoddy programming, which in turn led to very weak enemy design. Other than that... orb 3d... easily one of the most baffling games I've ever seen. why did it even exist

I think Strider for the NES was put into development at the same time as the arcade game. I have never really played the NES Strider, so I couldn't tell you if it was the best one. But it does look cool, and it is a completely original game within the series. Capcom had nothing to do with the Genesis/ MD port. That was one of the Sega reprogrammed Capcom releases. It was impressive as a 1990 arcade port, and the first cartridges on home consoles with an 8MEG ROM size. I remember seeing it for like $99.99 Canadian in department stores. I ended up with a second hand copy for nothing years later. Their is also an arcade port of Strider that was bundled on a second disc with Strider 2 for the PS1, and that version is a better home port that includes a remixed soundtrack. It's not an emulation, either. Strider 2 on the PS1 is pretty cool. But I haven't played it in a long time. Strider 2 by US Gold sucks.
@RetroDrewАй бұрын
Unfortunately, Strider 2 PS1 is kind of underwhelming. I played it recently and was let down. However, that Strider 2014 reboot is fantastic and is probably the best entry in the series
@schtive81Ай бұрын
@@RetroDrew Strider 2 is a direct sequel of the original arcade game, and even did get an arcade release. Even the PS1 version is a rather short game overall, but still a larger game than the original arcade release. The letter grading system does give Strider 2 much more replay value overall. I have never played the arcade rev. But the PS1 version does give you infinite lives in its default settings. So it is easy to burn through all the stages. But the challenge comes from earning the 'S' or 'SS' ranks. I found that aspect to be an improvement over the arcade game in ways. It does come bundled with a really good arcade accurate port of the original Strider. I think complete ling the arcade Strider 1 before starting Strider 2 (on the PS1) does unlock some additional stages for Strider 2. I own a copy of Strider on Steam, but I have never gotten around to playing it. It's still in my back catalogue. This is really a reboot.
