We saw what gelled alcohol with additives to make it flare up more orange can do but are these cooking chafer fuel cartridges from Sterno an even better way to heat your house during cold weather when there's a power outage? They're full of the notoriously clean-burning methanol gel, a fuel so clean some people use it to boost/cool car engines. They're definitely a good candidate. Let's run some smell, smoke, and temperature tests and find out!
And don't forget to heck out the first part of this video series!

After hours of looking, I found the cheapest place to get methanol-based ones is "webstaurantstore" on their own website or their ebay store page. They're like $0.75/ea after shipping!

As I have been learning about gel fuel heat sources, I found out that the paper label is ALWAYS supposed to be REMOVED before lighting. At least the brand I bought "jellyfish" says this and had a big red warning on amazon listing. The label can catch fire! Hope this helps! :)

Wow I checked this channel for new uploads at the perfect time! I'm making about 100 candles for this winter to save on electricity and gas, so this video is perfect for me!

I found I still had a couple of cases of these from my Y2K prep. Yes they are from 1999 and still work. So I wanted to see if they would work as an emergency heat source in the front seats of my van with curtains right behind them to keep the heat up front. I have a tall soup pot with a lid and I first tried it out with just 3 of them and it seemed to work but I didn't have a thermometer. Five will fit in a circle with 6-8 inches above them--the flame doesn't even reach the top and even with just the 3 you could warm your hands holding them over the top of the pot. Plus, they all can be instantly extinguished by simply putting the top on the pot.

Thinking of this for my truck camper overnight. Any dangers with fumes as I sleep?

@@bigperm005 1) battery powered carbon monoxide detector. 2) probably going to need to crack a window anyway due to humidity

for better efficiency put your 'heaters' on the floor. You can help heat the room with using normal incandescent light bulbs running off an inverter. Touch a 20 watt one and you can burn your fingers! Imagine running 10-100watt ones. Use pot stands with pots of water on them. Water will store up heat and release it slowly as well as adding humidity to the room to make you feel warmer.

Gonna pick up a couple and put them in the tow bag in my car. Do you think gel would work better than the wick ones?

I wonder if the cooking stove would heat the area better if you pot the chafers In the oven and closed the oven door. ?????

Better too, as the oven is closer to the floor and get benfit from rising heat and the radiant collection and output from the metals walls.of oven.

Thank you. If need to reduce the amount of cans burning, do you extinguish the flame by placing the cap back on can? How do you safely do it?
@EmergencySurvivalTips

I noticed that the methanol ones U can basically blow out since it's a wick then put the cap on but for the alcohol ones that are more open, you have to put the cap over them for a second to put them out then open it back up or the gas pressures from evaporating alcohol will blow the top off like a firecracker.

Use a flat steel snuffer with a handle to be sure you get the flame out. Then wait for it to cool before putting the lid on. I'm using jel fuel with the Vesta heater/stove.

Heat rises, and water may help. Would increasing humidity create a "warmer " effect?

Yes, but the density needs more thermal energy to warm up. Also it condenses on your windows and rolls down then rots the wood.

You should definitely use the clay pot method. I'd like to see the results from that experiment. I've thought about it for a while, but i never have time.

The heat is just going straight up into the ceiling not into the room. You gotta capture that heat with a clay pot or something

That clay pot nonsense from those idiot 5 minute craft life hack channels is BS and if you use candles like they say, you'll die. Yes the heat rises. Great. Wave around a flap of cardboard and mix the air up.
