Someone gave it a 1 Star (the lowest possible) on google reviews because they didn't open on time, how sad is that? The owner is helping the community for goodness sake. It's makes me want to get up there sometime, get a fish supper and leave a whacking great tip.

The cost of materials, staff, business rates, electricity etc add up to more than these people are charging. On every portion of fish and chips sold, I guarantee that these generous people are losing money which makes them local philanthropists. That is their choice but local people should be thankful to the business owners for their amazing kindness. I didn't even mention possible shop rental costs. If they raised their price by 50% to £4.50 that would still be cheap and would hurt them less, financially, enabling a more comfortable, long term business viability. Only a suggestion. They have their own reasons for the £3 price.

Someone posted that the owner of the place is a fish wholesaler/distributor. If that is true, it explains how he can afford to write off this shop as a charitable contribution to his community as the wholesale business earns more than enough to fund all the costs for the chippy.

You've got to take into fact the effect the low price has on the quantity demanded. I.e. the price elasticity of the demand. It's possible that the revenue they make outweighs their costs.

Either way its the locals that benefit, i dont live there 🤣

My local Chippy in Ayr also does Fish & Chips for £3 ... (Marco's Fish & Chip Shop). And it's a decent portion. Some shops in the UK are now charging £20 for F&C, daylight robbery !!!

I first heard of Mathew's Chippy watching, 'The Poorest Town In Britain: "We Live On Nothing And We're Just Surviving." ' by TalkTV (5:41 - 7:41). The owner Stan Mathews gave a (too) short interview. He's a hardworking, kind gentleman who cares about his community. Mr. Mathews and his modest shop deserves to become world-famous. I'm from Toronto, Canada and would visit Grimsby just to eat at Mathew's Chippy!

To get that sized portion of chips, fish, peas and a can of drink at any of my local fish and chips in Medway, Kent will cost close to £14. Same size portion of fish and chips is around £11, post of mush peas £1.20 and a can of drink £1.60. Another chippy close to me that is good quality does the same size fish and chips for £10. So £3.80 for all of what you had is damn good. It may not be the best quality in the world but as long as it is edible, that is all what matters, a hot decent sized meal and a drink for £3.80....superb.

Grimsby and Cleethorpes is the best area for fish and chips in the UK. There’s about five chippies in a mile radius that are as good as it gets. Pips and Ocean Fish Bar being the two best.

My old stomping ground that.. Must admit when I was there back in day that place was known as one to avoid.. The batter was usually so dark because the oil was older than what the Saudi’s are pumping up.. But it looks to have changed so I’m wondering if it’s changed owners or somebody else running things 🤷🏻‍♂️ either ways if the place is doing well and the locals are happy then all good 👍🏻

If you every come to Australia, come to Toowoomba in Queensland and Try "Super Rooster" the have 3 locations only in this town, been operating since 1983 and serve the "WORLD'S BEST" BBQ Chicken & Chips. People from overseas have posted on their facebook page saying they are the best Chips they have had anywhere. Not sure of their secret but I drive 100km just to have a Quarter Chicken & Chips with the wing its that good. Great video, well done.
