Mmm, this reminds me of my dad. I was nervous when he met a Japanese researcher (he's an archivist) and immediately started talking about anime, but especially as this was back in the early 00s, she was just deeply amused and fascinated that a man in his late 50s would be interested in anime (especially because he watched shojo anime exclusively... he's in it for the romance... so he knew the same types of anime as her LOL). I guess it was "gap moe"? Most people find my dad's love of anime super cringy but the Japanese researchers he meets (he specializes in ww2 history so it happens a fair amount) are always really entertained because even these days, you don't see a lot of shojo anime fans who are italian men in their 70s...

@solitarelee6200 You're the kind of people I stop and read comments for. Here you are, casually mentioning a life anecdote that to me sounds just as deeply fascinating as that Japanese researcher woman, like- I just- This is so hype. Your dad is an archivist (which is already so cool, imo). He likes shoujo anime (Did he watch Utena?). He's legitimately in it for the romance. He specializes in ww2 history (which, yeah, totally explains why Japanese researchers would show up. Did he get to study anything about the African theater of the war? Love me some Desert Fox anecdotes). He's Italian, meaning he's a spiritual neighbor of mine (I'm French, hello hello). And _YOU_ were at least partially raised by that absolute unit of a cultured fellow. I'm sorry if I sound super serious, it's just- I need you to understand how supremely hype every part of this is. Sora is right. I'm a middle-aged Japanese woman, and even among the middle-aged and elderly there are many anime fans. So, if you asked why you came to Japan and say something condescending or disrespectful to otakus, such as ``I'm not some creepy anime otaku foreigner!'', you'll lose your chance to make Japanese friends.

I think people forget that anime is first and foremost a format to tell a story. Just like feature movies, short movies, TV dramas, Western animation, whatever you name it. Some formats will gravitate towards certain genres of stories because of flexibilities and limitations inherent to the format, but by and large there is something for everyone in anime; you just have to look beyond whatever's popular or controversial. Imagine judging all TV shows just because you saw media controversy. It's not like people don't have unhealthy obsessions with TV shows either.

It's because Hollywood has worked really hard over decades to stigmatize animation as something childish, low effort, and generally low-brow, even though Western animation from before Hollywood had dug its talons into pop culture was made with extremely high skill and in fact heavily inspired anime. Disney films when Walt Disney was alive, MGM and Hanna Barbera, etc. These animations seamlessly interacted with their own soundtrack, as if one person did all of the animation and the music, simultaneously. Orchestras recorded music specifically for every single film and short; there were no re-used tracks except the intro/outro. I believe the reason for this stigma is that actors are naturally in competition with animators and VAs since they are mostly entirely separate groups of people. The only crew that could be shared between a live action film and an animation are the writers, and even that would not be ideal because a good animation writer will use the potential freedom of an animated frame to their advantage in conveying emotion and tone. Most actors aren't good at VA work in Hollywood; if they do star as VAs, they typically are "themselves" because if their voice isn't recognizable, the "star power" is lost. It's mostly about marketing, not about the performance. So to compete harder, Hollywood tanks the reputation of animation to encourage adults to see films with their star actors, which are of course "high brow" and "very sophisticated." In truth, early American animation shorts, such as Bugs Bunny in the 1930s/40s, were actually intended for adults. Vaudeville and slapstick humor was en vogue at the time, so it is only through the lens of our modern culture that we consider it childish. In reality, they made a _ton_ of references to the pop culture at the time which you would have to be an adult in that era to get. We mostly only get the Vaudeville/slapstick parts because we are divorced from the pop culture of the times. One good example is Foghorn Leghorn, who is entirely a parody of a character from a contemporary radio drama. His voice doesn't sound like that just because it's inherently funny.

For anyone who still doesn't believe Sora, think of it this way: If someone came to YOUR country and said "I'm only here for the girls and architecture, I hate the culture and food here!", you'd be insulted too. I like when people come to my country and get invested in my culture. It makes me feel happy that other people wanted to partake in my culture. If I can't hang out with a foreigner, I don't like them. I'm sure Japanese people feel the same way. That's why they don't hate weebs.

I agree there's no reason for them to go out of their way to mention they hate the culture or food lol But if they only like the girls then maybe that's okay because it's a preference and they weren't attracted to the women in their own country that much. That's normal sometimes. I've been on the reverse end where gaijin-hunters approached me because I'm not 100% Asian and stand out a bit when I'm in Japan. And sometimes they make me feel uncomfortable too since they just want to be with me because I'm different and want to show me off as like some medal/decoration since it's cool to be with a foreigner in a relationship or even one night stand (to some weird Japanese chics I've met) And sometimes gaijin-hunters annoy me a lot, but meh I kinda understand them sometimes too, at least occasionally there are more serious ones that get married to guys from other countries or actually get invested in the relationship. It's a complicated feeling for me. I'm indifferent to a lot of things like culture once I get used to it, it's like I never hate anything but it's just what it is... But I would understand food if they actually tried all the food and maybe had allergies or some medical reasons too. It could be something deeper and they aren't good at expressing themselves. I try to look for the best in people

I used to be the same way, but it does dull the receptors in your brain that receive dopamine (which is like candy for the brain), one of two reward chemicals in the brain, the other being serotonin (which makes you feel relaxed, so more like tea), and I realized I was lying to myself by replacing real life relationships with fantasy. It becomes an idol in your life. The most powerful weapon the enemy has (other than fear) is lies, and the lie that keeps young men down is that distractions are "good enough", but there is already a way to deal with this. Bro, back when I used to live in Japan, each year we had +30 American law students flying in to do a summer law program at my university for a month. I would show them around and one of the most common questions I got asked by the foreign students was mainly about JAV or eroani crap. It was so annoying lol. I remember one year, a group said a lot of Japanese culture and customs were cringe and kept gloating how they heard it was "easy to score Japanese bitches". A lot of complaints were lodged from Japanese girls that year relating to harassment and stalking. As you say, I love the weebs who genuinely enjoy the history, culture, literature, etc. I love talking with foreigners about Meiji Restoration, significance of buddhism/shintoism, or how Tomino is a badass for his works on Gundam. Those other PoS who make fun of Japanese culture and "weebs", obsess over porn, and fetishize japanese girls are a whole different breed.

Especially girls love to talk about my bag and wonder what anime the characters are from because they're from rather oldschool anime that weren't that popular here. it's so much fun to openly be a weeb here and make friends with other otaku. There is one old Lady in my town that i constantly see at the grocery store who is dressed head to toe in kimetsu no yaiba merchandise, you always know she is close by how much noise her buttons on her clothes make xD i wish i could show her because her drip is immaculate. we actually became friends because she saw my ita bag and now we always talk when we see each other :D

Howdy, my name is Rawhide Kobayashi. I'm a 27 year old Japanese Japamerican (western culture fan for you foreigners). I brand and wrangle cattle on my ranch, and spend my days perfecting the craft and enjoying superior American passtimes. (Barbeque, Rodeo, Fireworks) I train with my branding iron every day, this superior weapon can permanently leave my ranch embled on a cattle's hide because it is white-hot, and is vastly superior to any other method of livestock marking. I earned my branding license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day. I speak English fluently, both Texas and Oklahoma dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their cowboy code, which I follow 100% When I get my American visa, I am moving to Dallas to work in an oil field to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a cattle wrangler for the Double Cross Ranch or an oil rig operator for Exxon-Mobil! I own several cowboy hats, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I rebel against my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond. Wish me luck in America!

Sora is right. My fellow foreign folk talk a lot about what sorta people the Japanese do and do not like in others. It is usually wrong. I lived in Tokyo for a little under five years as an international student. I am often the sorta person people would describe as not ideal for Japanese culture. I can be loud because my voice carries and I have a loud laugh that people can hear down the street. I have visible tattoos on places like my hands. I am overly extroverted and friendly with anyone I meet. Yet I had plenty of Japanese friends who said these were positive qualities. They said that my voice and laugh are very friendly and make me people happy, that my tattoos were cool designs (even had an old lady call them 格好いい once), and that it was good to be enthusiastic and open with new people since people were usually curious about me too. It was the same for other friends of mine who other gaijin would try to say were cringe or 'bad foreigners' and all that. They were often the ones with the most local friends. People always try to boil the Japanese down into one singular thing but they are just people like everywhere else. Be enthusiastic about the opportunities around you, don't make fun of the pop culture, treat people with a warm heart and be open to new experiences, and they will usually enjoy when you come around. As for being a weeb generally, no need to be anxious about it. Most every weeb I knew who came to Japan calmed down after awhile and reached a state where their interests were just common popular interests. The intensity we give to our interests, which sometimes makes us awkward, is often due to some missing element that is then found once immersion is reached. Kinda like how people outside Japan might watch a ton of videos about living in Japan but then they naturally stop watching that content as often once they move to Japan, or how people who really enjoy anime may start watching only the stuff they really enjoy once they are here rather than consuming every single anime that crosses their screen.

In my experience here, Japanese people like it when you like Japanese things. I do, and they seem to like that, but I'm not really a weeb. I don't watch a lot of anime, but I do enjoy it sometimes. Full Metal Alchemist was one of my favorites. And Death Note. Stuff like that. I have become a bit of a train otaku though. Like one Monday, a co-worker asked me what I did last weekend. So I told her that I took the shinkansen to Takasaki, then went to Echigo Yuzawa and Sakudaira, and then I went back to Omiya and Tokyo, where I stayed in Ikebukuro. I found an arcade, and played video games, and walked around all day. Then I went to Sendai on my way home, and tried tenzaru soba, and it was really good. She replied, "Wow, you really love Japan." Yes. I do - it's pretty interesting, and I do like the food, and the trains. And Japanese people seem to like that I study kanji every day. But people in Tohoku are not the most talkative. Today as my co-teacher told me we were doing recording, I wrote 録画, and 写真, and stuff like that. "Sugoi". 'Tsugoi'? I'm not studying for the JLPT or anything, so I'm learning the words we actually use, and I can do a lot of cities. Train otaku? Yes, I would say so. Weeb? I'm not sure. What do you think? Liked by Japanese people? I don't know, but I seem to get a positive response, and I am friendly and open minded. Learning Japanese language and culture, but through context mostly.

The porn thing does apply to general conversation with strangers in the west but get some close friends in a room and all bets are off. Same in Japan? Even then, sometimes you can read a group and see what is off limits or not. I work in construction so maybe my moral compass is a tad off lol.

As someone with ASD, keeping up with conversations has always been difficult. I see people quickly jumping from topic to topic and I can’t figure out when to say what. To give an example; there was a situation where people were talking about multiple topics and suddenly the topic of Jujutsu Kaisen came up and they talked about something in the manga. As I had not read it, before they move on to the text topic, I told that “I have watched the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie in theaters” as it got a global release. Then one person was like “We are talking about the manga”. Is the topic really different? If so little details are to be taken care of, then is it better to not speak anything at all?

So, am I considered a weeb if I watch little anime and am obsessed with traditional and historical (mostly edo era) japanese stuff instead, or does that have a different title? I've been thinking about that lately, because I watch anime like 2 times a week, so I'm not sure if I am a weeb.

It also works the opposite. When I was a kid, my dad worked for a Japanese bank in downtown Manhattan. When I visited for whatever reason, or when we had to have dinners with his colleagues, his coworkers and I used to talk about dragonball and gundam a lot. They were middle-aged men, I was a six year old girl. We had surprisingly a lot in common in that respect.

Most people in Japan I know have at least an anime they like, even if they aren’t a major anime fan in general. But I think one of the biggest things I’ve noticed is having a special interest you’re passionate about is also seen as a good thing in Japan. Like everyone has a hobby (趣味) and it’s seems being excited about that hobby is a good thing where in America being excited about a specific hobby often seems more cringey. 🤔 But yeah in general, people always hate creeps.

That's a good way to cover the topic in a quick and simple way for sure. Although it goes surprisingly deep if you dig into it. Talking about sexual stuff with japanese people IRL is possible, but it requires having COMMON SENSE about what's okay, when it is okay, and with whom it is okay. Just like any other place on earth. Something that the creepy kinda weeb will obviously not grasp. I'm not even that socially competent, but i've never made anyone uncomfortable in that way while having plenty of nsfw conversations. Most of it comes down to letting people talk about it first, know what level of discussion you're at and not crossing boundaries. Even through text it's not hard to tell if someone is uncomfortable or disinterested with a topic and vice versa. Yes, even if you're "neurodivergent", adults should know better regardless, so it always baffles me to see how little self awareness some people possess.

From my experience studying abroad, Japanese people don't really have an issue with weebs. As long as you are not forcing your opinions down other people's throats, people generally don't have a problem.

I'm not likely to ever be able to afford to travel, but if I did I'd probably conduct myself the same way I do at home: enjoy things (art, scenery, food, music, etc) and talk to nobody unless it's absolutely necessary. At home I've gotten the impression that creeps people out... Want a sure-fire way to get the side eye from strangers in the US? Go to an amusement park alone and just ride the rides without looking at or interacting with anyone except the staff.

Everybody likes a person who is enthusiastic, who no one likes is the type who has to rely on "not being like the others" since it makes their personality and behavior depended on looking down on another(Which means that if you are a stanger, you leave the impression of not being trustworthy since we all have things about us that we know could be perceived as weird by others). No one likes people who look down on others. At the same time, just work on having some basic social skills by showing respect and consideration for the feelings of the ones you talk to, and people will like being in your presence.

I love final fantasy, took karate for a long time. I took japanese for a few years. Out of all those things i resonate with final fantasy and karate more then the country its self. I admire and respect it and hope one day I can actually learn Japanese using what I have already learned years back.... anime has never been my thing since the early 90s. Porn aspect I care lil to none about lol.
