Know them by their fruits. While FDR talked about freedom, he did everything he could to take God-given free-will away from individuals and give power to the central government. The battle in Europe was between two very similar notions (national-socialism vs communist-socialism), both demanding absolute control of individual action and thought. In Europe this was and still is known as Right vs Left. FDR agreed central gov't should control individual action and thought, as long as he and his party controlled that action and thought. None of them had any concept of individual-freedom, which is America's Right-wing. Very different than Europe's Right-wing. Opposite, in-fact.

Actually, there is the Biblical form of separation, the first is based on the story of King Uzziah, in which he tried to offer sacrifice in the temple after the high priest told him he couldn't and was struck dead with leprosy, that's the institutional form of separation. The other is the story of Elijah where he told the Baal priests to take all the time they need praying to their pagan god upon making sure that he, Elijah, got to have his turn, That's communal form of separation.
