How my jaw dropped while we practiced covers of Iron Maiden, old Metallica and Black Sabbath. I never realized how complicated the instrument could be in something that sounded so straight forward on the surface. For a good minute to 70-ish seconds at the beginning, it had the kind of feel for a song that you'd hear in the back of a really chill and laid-back city building simulator. Like, I could totally imagine that first minute or so playing in the background of _SimCity 3000_ or something to that effect. And the part from 1:42 onward felt less like a part of the original song, and more like a reprise with the key change and the accelerated overall tempo, but I still really liked it... ...it's the thirty-ish seconds _in between_ those two parts that I was left the most... not disappointed, just... _less enthused by._ When you started with the quicker strings of taps at, for example, 1:14... it feels like you were trying to hop genres entirely to more of a free-form jazz than any sort of structure, and it's reflected in how the tempo seems to change for a few seconds afterward before normalizing again. And then the chord progression from 1:31-:41 _(clip below*)_ is just... the only word I can really use is "discordant". I don't think it fits with the rest of the song's personality, if that makes any sense-like if a pianist were playing Mozart, and then suddenly his cat stepped on a few of the keys. It feels so out of place, I can't help but wonder if it was an honest mistake _(which I know you're too good a player for)_ or an intentionally strange decision. Besides those middle thirty seconds, I would gladly listen to this almost as much as I've listened to your "heavenly bow-on-bass" snippet from a good while back, which is still my favorite piece from you... and I really hope beyond hope that you one day flesh that into a full single in the same vein as this, maybe even making them into their own album of some kind to purchase and enjoy. But then again, you have more combined cultivated skill and talent in one pinky than I do in both of my arms. Keep being amazing, Charles. * Clip here: kzbin.infoUgkxkfIQEJA4xPpDogbPife0mQF3k65v5UyI?si=SX9eZjcclqoL-nzD
