As someone who flies racing drones and having been using hall effect gimbals (Sticks) on drone radios (controllers effectively) for some years now I can say the controller industry has been sleeping on this for far too long. Hall effect sticks should have been the standard for years now. They are so much better, less prone to wear and drift. This really does need to become the standard. It's just too bad about the back ergonomics.

I imagine one worry is kids getting magnetic toys around them and possibly screwing up the permanent magnets inside. But I'm sure the PRIMARY worry is that if controllers last longer, people will buy fewer of them. The current controllers seem to be almost perfectly tuned to fail at a rate people consider annoying but reasonable to buy another.
@MxJavice
@MxJavice 2 жыл бұрын
@@Amiculi the magnets in my radios are extremely well shielded. Somehow I doubt that is an issue. Actually the radios are usually built for easily replacing and fixing them. Heck I swapped out the original sticks on my radio because I wanted less stick movement so I bought ones with less throw. And the new sticks were from the original manufacturer. Not an easy to come by feature these days. Being able to buy upgrade parts to install yourself... On your second statement I do pretty much agree as they know how to solve the issue. They just won't because profit.

The reason they are not the standard is because they last TOO long. Companies don't get this fucking rich if their products mever break and forcing you to buy a new one that will break just as fast. It's intentional.

The reason they won’t use them in gaming (mass production wise) is that magnets fracture easily and that changes their polarity. In my opinion gaming controllers need to be designed to take the worst of impacts.

The thing I love about the button switches is that it removes the failure point of the membrane acting as a spring. And with it being modular, a single button's membrane being dodgy doesn't mean you have to replace it all

23:30 thank you for showing this mod. Bought this few days ago and I found the button uncomfortable. Because it needs more effort to press the button and sometimes when the button bounce back it gives a feeling of it's stuck. Removing the tactile feeling actually make it more enjoyable and silent too as you said it making it linear. Thanks so much

I'm still regularly using my now ancient Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2, and thanks to the magnetic sensors and force feedback, it still responds like new. No drift after years and years of use, thousands upon thousands of hours game time, so if they used something similar to that on this controller? That's amazing. It will almost outlast the plastic housing of the controller around it, lol. Awesome to see, thanks for the info!

@@VKsChannel Yeah, I couldn't BELIEVE it when I found it years ago in a thrift store for 25 as-is. I took it home expecting to reuse the parts, plugged it in, and voila! It worked like new! Almost a decade now of my using it, and no noticeable wear other than shiny finger outlines of where I grip it. It's awesome looking back at when companies were building stuff to last forever, instead of planned obsolescence on everything, and it's refreshing seeing companies start to look into breaking away from this and go back to the "old" ways on that. The SteamDeck is another great example, making every part replaceable by and available to end-users, but this company is taking it even further by going back to the type of stuff we only find in rare old tech like that joystick, and using more expensive parts, so their product will last. Building up a name on that, rather than relying on cheap low-end profits. It's great for us as gamers, for sure! Edit: typo fixes

That Saitake controller is more suitable for PC Dinput(Direct input) style games where the actual X/Y layout is a square instead of a circle, and that range is read by those pre-xinput computer games. My old controllers have square holes where the thumbsticks move. This is how it has was in the old MSDOS joystick days too. Speaking of which, circle to square translation/mapping would be useful on those older PC games. edit: Just to add a bit more information for example, if you've ever played older pre-xinput era GTA games, e.g. GTA San Andreas on PC, you will notice that if you try to use a controller with circular holes/circular movement pattern you will notice that if you hop in a car and you try to move the thumbstick to each corner, you cannot turn the wheels on the car all the way, nor the camera all the way. Yes you can just keep the thumbstick left/right on a X-axis plane horizontally to steer the car fully, but in this game the thumbstick is also very important in controlling the forward/backward tilt of the car moving via moving the thumbstick up/down. Furthermore you any little moving out of the horizontal movement you lose full steering, you ahve to be very precise to get full steering. The sensitivy mode in this new controller is so useful for this, and it's a problem that has been plaguing me using controller with circular holes. My old Logitech cordless rumblepad 2 with square thumbstick holes/movement pattern is getting worn out over time even trying to after cleaning the potentiometers it's becoming jittery over the years.

@electricblue8196
@electricblue8196 2 жыл бұрын
@@campersruincod6134 I think it might be because of digital joysticks with micro switches and possibly the connection between digital and square. Could also be from analog to digital conversion of measuring a potentiometer all the way from 0-255 steps for an 8 bit computer? Or were 8 bit computers even less sensitive, seems though you'd be losing some range and make the sticks twitchy back then.

@@electricblue8196 nah, only thing I can think of was older hardware couldn’t process more advanced controls. Plus I don’t think they cared or though about it much, so just implemented to most basic level of deadzone that took the least amount of time to process.

The PS3's sticks are interesting, as they're not directly a hall effect sensor. Ben Heck recently did a teardown and de-potting of one on his Driftbusters video, and it turns out to be a magnet and a PCB with some traces on it. What's going on seems to be the chip driving the system is inducing a current, and thus a magnetic field as well, into the PCB, and this is manipulated by a magnet on the yoke of the stick's gimbal, this manipulated magnetic field is then picked up by the other half of the same PCB and fed into the same chip that drives it, except now the signal is amplified; this signal is either translated by additional IC on the chip that is then fed into the controller's processor, or the amplified signal is fed directly to the controller's processor, I don't think it's actually known either way, I don't think IC schematics exist without deeper research. Up until Heck's video, the sticks weren't even that well understood, from what I can find, even the PS3 Devwiki thought the sticks were a hall effect sensor, when they're in reality not. I'm not sure which design is better, they're both essentially drop-in replacements for potentiometer sticks in terms of the stick cluster itself, but both require a different PCB interface and circuit components to make them work. Sony's approach used less overall parts, as it's a sensor-less PCB, but used a more complex chip to drive and read the system; whereas GuliKit's approach uses more parts but is a lot simpler in practicality. It'll be interesting to see what other companies do, maybe this'll push ALPs into making their own. While the patent for this exists, or is at least pending, I wonder what the validity of that patent is considering this is such a simple design, I'd be curious to see how strong that patent is.

I was honestly planning to buy a new controller soon anyway for my pc, will give this a try. I don't really care about the programmable stuff, but better buttons and sticks is nice. @DKarkarov
@DKarkarov 2 жыл бұрын
So been using this controller for a few hours now and here is my gripes. It is ergonomically worse than a Xbox series S controller. Mostly this comes from the back panel being so shallow and there not being any weight. The trigger design like you mentioned is definitely better on other controllers, and it does result in your finger spacing being wider than others. I am sure I will get used to it but it is a little uncomfortable right now. That said, it isn't "that much" worse, it is very minor and can certainly be something you adjust to with use. My big complaint especially for PC use, is that the + and - button have been mapped as start and back. These are WAY too high on the controller for that mapping. These buttons desperately need to be switched with the home and square/circle button, or a way of manually remapping these buttons needs to be introduced. It is unintuitive and inconsistent with the placement on pretty much any other controller that exists. Also this is definitely a me thing, but this controller is not that out of the box moddable. Despite being able to disassemble it far easier than most modern controllers the differences in construction of buttons makes it so you can't replace the parts. I would love to buy new buttons to get their faces to match the xbox layout, but it can't be done because no one makes buttons like this. If there is a source for them, I don't know who they are. Also I don't really like the sticks, the rubbery feeling just isn't to my taste. That said you can get replacement sticks it is just a question of finding a set that will fit. It is definitely not compatible with x box style sticks. I am going to try a pair of full metal ps5 sticks and hope for the best. Switch pro sticks are not worth bothering as they will basically be the exact same sticks just in different colors. All that nonsense aside..... this controller was easy to update, connected via the included usb cable instantly with no effort on my part, works great with no stick drift, no dead zone, all buttons are super responsive, the grip is good though I worry this will change as the soft shell inevitably wears out, and it performs as well or better than any other controller I have used. I imagine for first person shooters it will be better than most if not all other controllers, still not as good as mouse and keyboard but sometimes you want to be able to lean back and not be hunched over. It even has unique presets set up for pc so it automatically switched to xbox mode with no stick dead zone without me having to enable these features. All in all, my only major complaint is the + and - button placement and otherwise so far it seems equal to a xbox series S controller or slightly better in most respects while also costing less money.

To me the best controller is the sega saturn FAT version and PS2... Sadly i don't have them anymore but arround 2013 i bought xbox 360 to play on PC and its TERRIBLE ... the DPAD is Horrible and i had to mod the controller a lot and still today is still not good ... the buttons seems to have a long travel time but have no drift on my analog so ... nice i guess... thought king kong v2 or whatever the name is could be the upgrade i need but sadly i don't feel it will worth it =/

The backshell seems easy to switch out so the bad trigger feel isn't a problem with a good custom shell. The turbo is kind of cheaty most of the time can also be done in software so that is fine as well. It's a great controller with little to no consequence besides nindendo's HD rumble which isn't used on PC often. As well as Sony's triggers which is only a pain in the butt by Sony's fault and in only a few games.

Regarding the issue where your middle finger starts bumping into the triggers whenever you press the bumpers, I noticed this controller has the same bumper and trigger design as the XBox One and Series X controllers where the bumpers were designed to be pressed using the recesses where the bumpers and the triggers meet. Microsoft and it looks like Gulikit designed their controllers so that half your index fingers rest on those two bumper recesses and half on the triggers. Try doing that because I find it works really well for me. My index fingers don't even have to move laterally when pressing the bumpers since they're already resting on those recesses and pressing the triggers requires minimal finger movement away from me. I used to dislike the Xbox-style bumpers too because I felt they required a bit too much reaching to press but once I figured out what those recesses were for, I've grown to really love the design.

Regarding circularity, one should note that in the case of the "square" readout controller, or even the "butterfly" DualSense there is a range outside the box and circle, in the top-bottom and left-right region, where the stick move, but since they already send the 100% value, even the gamepad tester doesn't register the movement. Sooo as you said the game might crop the square diagonals, but so does the plastic when 'perfect' circularity is achieved, so it is all just a consequence of calibration choice of the maker. In some games (Rocket League for example) it is good to have the shape a bit squared, cos you need those 100% values for some movements, and it is gosh dang hard to hit them with perfect circularity, as you must move the stick precisely vertical, any slight mistake in angle will ruin your 100% Y output on that axis. In fps shooters 'perfect circularity' is good maybe. (Have no idea, being a MNK player.) BUT just bought the GameSir T4 Kaleid, which you can set through its software from perfect circle active zone the 'butterfly' shape of a rounded square, and it is SOOO much easier to play that way! Until now I used a standard Xbox Series controller to play RL wich had a more circular readout for its analogues, and it was much harder to play than with the hybrid readout shape. So yeah, high sensitivity is good in Rocket League for example.

>turbo mode >macros Boo, while turbo and macros are useful for the masses in very niche areas, it means you absolutely can't use such a good controller in competitive areas as turbo and macros are often banned controller features due to how it brings an unfair and unskilled advantage to the user. Hopefully they make a "King Kong 2 Competition" variant without turbo and macro.

I'm not a hardcore player, i just need a controller that doesn't get stick drift right after it's warranty had ended. My story with controllers if someone don't have anything to do, better than reading this comment :) My Xbox one controller worked for 2 years (warranty for 2 years too and it's expired), and my friend Xbox Series controller worked for half a year, somehow his warranty was something around 15 days i dunno why, but there should be microsoft warranty which he didn't know about and opened it trying to fix stick drift, and when you opened your controller, your warranty is as good as dead. We both played Elden Ring and around the same time we get the same 'right stick goes up on it's own' drift, exactly the same! I bought the dualsense controller year ago too (exactly fucking year ago, and yes warranty has expired in this month, 18 days ago), since everyone kept saying how good it is with aiming, response from sticks etc. And at first days of using it when my hands got sweaty they start to get some kind of red dots like pimples or something, like allergy on the material of ds or something, while on my Xbox one nothing like that ever happened, so i tried to clean ds with medical alcohol but nothing changed, and yes, i clean my hands regularly, and yes they sweat the same way when i'm using x.one controller and no red dots/pimples, only when i'm using dualsense, and yes, i'm cleaning my controllers from sweat too. So i used my Xbox one controller untill it dies on E.R. without using ds, it was just lying in it's cardboard. I said to my friend like "then buy dualsense", overall it's good for games. Though my honest opinion is that i don't like it's sticks, they are precise but somehow they are kinda tight, if i want to make a very small micro adjusment it's just...uncomfortable, feels like i need to press it rly hard but at the same time it's micro adjusment, so i cant' press it too hard....well, fuck it. I aim better on X.one even though ds sticks are radial and supposed to be better. But then suddenly after around 6 month of playing, not that regularly even (around 2-5 hours a day at max, and sometimes i didn't play for a week or so), my left adaptive trigger died in the new spider man game on a pc (trigger itself is working, but no adaptive trigger function anymore), and after a few days my left stick just goes crazy. When i move forward my camera going to the left, and when i move backwards my camera go to the right. I had the exact same issue with my dualshock 4 controller except only going forward, and dsh4 was 1st rev and already 3 years old and didn't have any serious problems except square button sometimes stuck (after x360 controller dsh4 was fucking best controller, way better than ds). Never gonna buy anything from microsoft or sony again. Fucking paying for an air. I have around i dunno mb like 13 year old controller? I think it's called Logitech F310 (or it looks the exactly same way not sure), but it's very old, i bought it at around 20$ (current course), and you know what? It never fucking drift and all buttons working just fine, hello xbox A button, that reference is for you, that controller was in a pantry for god knows how many years, since i had the xbox 360 and 2 controllers which is broken now, but even they don't fucking drift lol, their sticks just stuck at one point but their potentiometer is working just fine. Btw not me who broke them, (don't give your controllers to others to play "for a few days"), but it is what it is. And i hope this controller will not drift on it's own after a year or two.

Great video, you were only one that actually took it completely apart and also showed joystick differences. I have already seen pictures of the paint wearing off the trigger buttons and shoulders and I'm concerned on how lasting the rubber on joysticks will last. I will disagree with these 'mechanical' buttons lasting 50 million clicks; the connection is still being established with conductive pads, which can wear out after many years. These 'mechanical' switch buttons give you the tactile feel, however, they will not last as long as real mechanical switches that use metal as connection points. Yes, they eliminated the rubber for the conductive pads, but I've had pads go bad before the rubber in Guitar Hero guitars, etc. The first thing that will go bad is probably the battery; lithium batteries only have 300-500 charge cycles. If you use it as much as a phone that’s only 2-3 years. I do love the accuracy of the new joysticks and can't wait for other companies to improve upon this or next version.
@VKsChannel
@VKsChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Paint is paint and you can always re-paint it again the conductive pads will last probably more than your entire life, just look at the NES controllers this console have 40 years of being released and thought the rubber membranes may have ripped open the contact pads are still great, all you might have to do is clean the contacts with some rubber to remove any oxidation and they will be working like brand new again, and the battery is easily removable and replaceable, you can buy new batteries so easily on aliexpress or eletronics stores
