My biggest failure to date had to do with stain. I bought some aerosol polyshades and the can seemingly depressurized while still nearly full. Somewhere along the way, I picked up a spray can that you pour liquid into and pressurize with a compressor. So rather than waste a can of stain that I needed to finish a project, I decided to cut the bottom off and transfer it to my sprayed. Long story short, it was still very pressurized and it too ALOT of superfine steel wool to clean, not the garage, but the kitchen. Luckily my better half saw the humor in this and didn't get upset. I hope you upload this video someday ! Don't worry, you're not alone : I (once) came up with a workbench design that I thought was really nice, so I builded it, tested it, and sure enough, it seamed to stand up nicely. I threw all my tools on it, and lefted my workshop. As soon as I shut the door, I heard a not-so-nice sound, and my workbench fell apart with all my tools on it ... I had a great time cleaning my mess up.

About a year ago you did a step stool, a handle on the step stool would really go big with the elderly. I am going to try that on the next step stool.

Half the projects i start to make fail, so when i do get something right im always over the moon about it lol. My mini stool project is still im bits as i made the sides non-symetrical when cutting them out with the jigsaw :( ive got a lot of sanding and filling to get them both the same size and shape. Love the video Steve and you could. Probably never make them quick enough to keep me happy as i always end up just watching yours, izzy swans, paul sellers and matthias wandels to name a fews videos over and over again, even those ive seen dozens of times before. Nice Project today!!! My "Fail" was working with my Kreg,- drilled a hole and out came blue saw dust.... Yep - I forgot to readjust the drill bit stop collar.... So now I have a nice little pilot hole on the bottom of the jig...... O' the joys of woodworking!!! Keep up the good work, I enjoy your weekly projects!!!

The stool looks very similar to an Amish style I have seen on the Net. They made it in oak and varathaned it. Very practical and useful! And would make a good plant stand as well!

Nice project Steve! My Tie Rack Hanger video was a do over. My first design broke apart half way through the filming, so I totally redesigned the whole hanger and it came out 10X better anyway.

Hi Steve. I like your videos and I justed wanted to give you and any other woodworker here a tip on free wood that's filling landfills here in the states, and possibly other countries as well. It's from crating for lawnmowers. The crates are often deck planking or heavier; often 3 to 7 ft long. This is the time of year the stores are stocking up, so the discarded crating is ,too. The stuff is easy to pull apart, not like pallets. It pains me to see so much nice wood getting tossed out so I like to spread the word. Have a great day !

I saw a stool like this years ago in I think fine woodworking magazine. The base was a bit different and the handle was longer. All solid wood, and they gave a few ideas on customizing the handle. Great project! I'm going to make it now that you make it look so easy.

Steve asks about woodworking failures in the video. There are too many to count, but when I lived in Houston, I built a 2ft tall skateboard mini-ramp in my living room. I told myself that 1/4" plywood with joists at 8" centers would be sufficiently strong. The soft spot that formed at the bottom of the transition told me that I was drastically wrong.

Really love this channel, I'm learning tons. However, one thing that I'm not very fond of is how often he uses pocket screws after getting that jig of his. I'm sure if I ever got one, I'd find it a thousand kinds of useful, as well, but I'd still like to learn more about how to similarly join wood without screws.

Just made a 1/2" wall dovetailed box. I was test-fitting the joint, when half of one of the dovetails broke. Super Glue, the wood-worker's best friend....

How do you print your templates in sketch up so they come out to the right scale you need them? When i print plans as a reference is not a big deal, but if i want it to use as template, them measurements are not correct (they are scaled to fit on the paper) Thank you for your help and you inspiration every day.

Thanks so much for your videos, Steve. Love your work and your style. Quick question, if anyone still reads these old video comments: what's the advantage of the band saw over a jigsaw? You use both in this video - the band saw to cut out the template and then the jigsaw for the smaller holes. Am I right that the band saw is basically just a fixed-in-place jigsaw? Ie, a band saw is to a jigsaw as a drill press is to a drill? Or are there other differences past that? Could I do everything with a jigsaw that you do with the band saw, just maybe not as easily on large(r) cuts? Thanks again!

+TheBloke The only difference is that a bandsaw blade is a loop, so it needs an entry point. It isn't possible to cut out a hole. With a jigsaw, you can drop the blade into a starter hole.

I made a adapter out of 1x4s to be able to connect my miter saw. I had it all finished and I dropped it on the floor and it shattered in half! I mixed up some 2 part epoxy and clamped it until it dried and it was all fixed!

Failed projects you say? I say more fuel for the fire ;) I have plenty of failed projects but I believe in "learn by doing" and if it goes tits up then I just use it for fire-wood and have another go. This is also why I mainly, and almost exclusively, use pine for my woodworking projects! Amongst the failures there are also the big winners and I do have a lot fewer failures lately... Perhaps that's why last winter was so damn cold?

My woodworking fail: it was the end of my senior year in high school and I wanted to make a wine stand for my aunt who really, r e a l l y loves wine. It was a board with a 45° angled hole at the top and another 45° angle taper at the bottom. It ended up never working no matter how hard I tried. I wanna revisit this, though. I think I need a thicker board. Angles and physics was never my thing.
