There are used high-resolution cameras, drones for aerial photogrammetry, and sometimes specialized rigs for capturing images from multiple angles. The software (Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D, RealityCapture, and Meshroom are some of the softwares that can be used) detects distinctive features or key points in each image (e.g., corners, edges, textures). These key points are matched across different images. The same physical point in the real world will appear in different positions in overlapping photos. By analyzing the positions of matched key points across multiple images, the software calculates the 3D coordinates of these points, generating a sparse 3D point cloud. The sparse point cloud is refined into a dense point cloud, filling in more details. This dense point cloud is used to reconstruct the surface geometry of the object or terrain, often generating a mesh of interconnected polygons.
