In my opinion, one leg tuck is an astronomically easier task than a 1:30 plank for a passing score. A 3:30+ plank is definitely a challenge that folks are going to have to really train for.

@@Obsessedwithcoding I definitely think it’s very dependent on the person. For me, I don’t train enough for endurance, so I struggle with those types of challenges, but can perform more power hungry movements like a leg tuck easier than others. You can practice the plank and administer it anywhere; whereas, the leg tuck requires you to have a pull up bar. This probably factored into their decision to go to the plank, as it already heavily depends on an array of equipment to conduct.

I was in from '04-'10 as a 91W/68W & I championed for this type of PFT all along... I was alright at pushups but, sit-ups, & fast paced long distance running was never for this guy! I could lift heavier things then 90% of my crew at the time, I could plank longer, I could run a solid 2 mile & be useful if allowed 20 mins; my best 14:05! However, I'm pretty spent & not very combat effective (maybe a delivery message & drop dead from exhaustion). I feel that @ 37yo I could pass 4 of these events w/≥85% & the other 2 (running involved) w/ at least a ≥75%. With some training I could possibly get 85% + on all 6 events! I'm going to train till April 2023 to "re-enlist" myself back to good health!!! Thanks for sharing!

My brother's stepson completed basic training, however he came out of it weighing 15 lbs heavier than he did going in. As a former army reservist myself with 25 years, I find this troubling. It is supposed to be the other way around: come out more lean and fit, not heavier. He trained under the new ACFT standards. My impression is that trainees aren't running as much, which as you probably know, is the best way toward overall fitness. So yes, this is troubling news, first hand account.

I do not care what you do how fit you are as you get older your body is just not as good as it once was; whereas with gender yes there are differences, but the difference I see is that with gender even if women on average are weaker than men if a PARTICULAR female can meet the exact same standards she should be able to do whatever a man can if a man can meet those standards if either gender cannot meet a standard then they should not qualify; whereas with age I do not care who you are and what you do your body just gives out over the years. I used to max my pt test when I was AD.. now I’m in reserves and have taken a few acft’s and PT isn’t my full time job anymore lol. Those max standards are insane. I used to run 11:50 2 miles, which slowed down to sub 13 minutes (still maxing), when I put on weight and began maxing my push-ups. The shuttle sprint on ACFT is rough… but I just think that’s insane to max this PT test. I’m currently working on my deadlift as it’s something I’ve never really worked on in my life.

I don't like the Army's new PT program. The old three-event PT test with standard pushups, situps and two-mile run was fine by me. Nothing helped me more with pushups than working out with the bench press in the gym. Soldiers are now too obese to do situps, I gather, and that new two-mile run is really super slow by older standards! Aren't there less young soldiers in the Army that are smoking cigarettes nowadays?

@@ck3125 it is the fact that it is a single weight and not by your max allowed weight standard. Tall people lift a fraction of their allowed mass weight short people lift multiples. This is even worse for females. With body weight exercises you lift your own body so capping a person's mass is fine. Me a 5'3" deadlifting that Wright is easier at 170lbs than it is at 140lbs. But I get hassled for being 170lbs. I don't see how this concept is so hard for you to get. I presented the problem and suggested 2 solutions to make it fair. Either no weight standard or the deadlift is based off of a percentage of your max allowed weight.

I think the ACFT is fair despite all the complaints that it is not. The issues I see with it are how it is being implemented without proper PT program design and true fitness professionals taking charge across formations. The Army cannot seem to provide the resources and training programs broken into fitness level groups for certain events to then train everyone during PT hours or a set time for remedial PT. So then individuals are less likely or unable to make time outside of a 10-12 hour day five days a week to train without professional trainers. Way too much equipment and time required to implement such a test. And so far we just seem to be lowering the standards for it to avoid the real issues with it not being properly addressed. So I could care less if the Senate scraps it. But whatever they do I would contract PT Program Design out to contractors hired to work full time for every company commander to designate fitness groups and training programs for them. No squad or platoon level PT, but instead fitness level groups across each company. This way some soldiers train twice a day and we meet everyone where they are at to get people where we desire them to be. It is a big mess and no easy solutions due to time and resources needed for it to be effective. Sadly, it is looking like a major loss and we will see what policymakers decide and what the President signs off on in due time. APFT was not very good. But where I will say it was good, required zero equipment and far less complicated to train soldiers for. The ACFT is basically a very dumbed down version of a CrossFit Competition with no professional trainers in sight. The Master Fitness Trainers and so on is not being run right and a soldier is not going to be a Master Fitness Trainer unless that was the person’s MOS which I do not think we have an MOS for. Perhaps they need one or hire civilians so we can easily fire and replace them based on their results.

And this is why politicians shouldn't be involved with military training they can't even get their job right. I see the dead lift and the sled pull and kettle bell and Sprint and the run being useful but the over the head toss and that plank is ridiculous. What is becoming of the military is sad and in the future we will pay a price for developing whatever this is. We ran in boots and when in basic we ran everyday and did push ups and sit ups till we couldn't do anymore or threw up. I lost 20 lbs. When I was done with basic if kids today are coming out heavier that aren't working hard enough.

I honestly feel like a 5minute plank is harder or on par with one single leg tuck, try it right now, try holding a plank for 5minutes. Both the Leg Tuck and the plank are *core* exercises, the only difference is with one you're fully engaging your core for 5 minutes and with the other you're exerting your upper body just a little bit while you activate your core for **one single rep**.
