just got my first 40% ortho and have been loving it. would love to see some more small keyboard reviews. I know ortho isn't everyone's favorite flavor, but I have been having a blast learning the layout and tweaking my layers to exactly what i want. The lack of 40% content on youtube is actually very surprising to me.

40% GANG. I've been using 40s since around March of 2020. Since then I've used around 13 smaller (40% and lower) boards. I'm super glad you're getting into it, and totally agree the lack of content is pretty unfortunate. That said, I think my favorite critique of 40% keyboards is "how am I supposed to use that" but it took me maybe 2-3 weeks to get up to full speed! And even better? Once you figure out layers you like, it's quite fast (I type around 180WPM average). Plus, you find things like homerow numbers or arrows under WASD to be super quick compared to the alternative. Sorry for all the yap, but it's cool to see someone else just getting into 40s. I wish your wallet luck!

I remember when your channel used to be rather small and look at you now! I once commented on here by the time the Space65 V2 was considered the hotness, and it's crazy how much of the keyboard market has changed since then. I'm kind of hunting different keyboard layouts, and the concept of 40% layouts still scares me because I don't know all about the layout system with VIA/QMK (even if I own a couple that could use those programs), but thanks to your video, I might seriously consider it one day.

One that you should check out if you’re looking for 40% keyboards is the Inland MK47 (Micro Center exclusive, but their website ships). Ortholinear layout, QMK/VIA support, hotswappable (comes with Huano Red switches), FORTY DOLLARS.

If nothing else, the fact that it runs QMK means that you can easily set it up as the world’s greatest macropad. Maybe even use it as a really tall numpad if you turn it sideways.

I saw one in a Microcenter and was shocked to see something like that on a store shelf. They've usually got a keyboard section with boards, switches, and keycaps which already surprised me, but a 40% was not something I thought I'd see. Hell, I don't think I saw a Keychron Q9 either.

When I got my RK61 and unboxed it, I thought, " wow, this thing is small, smaller than I expected", I loved how small it was. First time I saw one of these 40%'s, I thought " oh sh*t, my bank account is about to shrink again" ... I'm resisting for the moment though (but I've got the devil whispering in my ear 😆) I think what I love about this is its simplicity, the minimalistic look. It's very appealing.

YES! SMALL ENOUGH - FINALLY. AND WITH LAYERS. 😍 I can see it's just fine with your small hands so it'll work for mine. Majority everything is sized for huge hands & mine are only almost 3" across the palms so most stuff doesn't work & gave me chronic RSI. Cost is a bit of a stretch but just got state "excess" $$ and it looks like this is worth it. Looks like a great "between" keyboard for those of us moving from full size with all the keys, to mini keyboards with layers to put keys where we want without losing 10-key functionality. And it's set up for mods - fun! Thanks for popping on to do this video! Please start a list of keyboard kits like this.

you know I was really hesitant to try a 40% board, but with a good setup on 3 layers it has been surprisingly fun to customize and learn. I also have a TKL and a 75%, but have found that 40% seems more daunting than in actually is, even for gaming. Sure, i had to rebind some keys to make up for the lack of a number row, but overall I would say it might be worth a shot if you get a cheap enough kit. at the very least it makes for a cheap key tester since you only need like 46-48 switches to swap the whole board.

i can see how i can use it, its kinda bothersome to use especially with missing ? keys, the solution is to make the arrow key inside layer (like holding your right alt or right spacebar) and place it on IJKL, HJKL if you vim user, and it would be great to use, and the placement of delete keys and the quote mark is gonna be hard to place, overall its a great keyboard if you can stand using layer and configuring yourself the keys you're gonna use
@WARnTEA

40% users usually make the right shift a question mark. This is great for people that don’t use right shift or are okay with only using left shift. Also, I enjoy using one of the spacebars for shift. It feels so nice typing when both of your thumbs are actively participating. Then you can replace the left shift with ctrl or a fn/layer key to access numbers and other punctuation. Another interesting usecase for splitspacebar is having the left one as backspace and right as space. Kinda makes a lot of sense when you think of backspace as moving the cursor left and space as moving the cursor right. Another common thing is just not using dedicated arrows. Numbers and nav keys feel incredibly comfortable when accessed using a layer key that puts the numbers/nav keys near the homerow. Also, another popular technique is turning the enter key into a tap/hold key, so that it works as a shift key when held and as a n enter key when tapped. This works surprisingly well, and eliminates the need for the right shift, allowing for it to be used as the question mark. Its a little awkward to use that key as the question mark at first but its close enough to the home row that you get used to it.

IMO 40% is unusable if you are gaming or working, so who is buying this - is a mystery to me. But damn I really appreciate Akko. Their Monsgeek M lineup is a killer for the value of it; keycaps are very cool, too; and even their switches are wonderful for the price. My build for office use was ~$170 (I bought everything during discount season) and that's with now so cheap Durock Shrimp switches and stabs and ~$50 SA keycaps. Kit was like 80 dollars or something.

I used a Minivan to hit Immortal 3 in Valorant. In particular the split spacebar was very useful. No number row didn’t really matter. There are obviously some tweaks you can make to improve the layout. Winkey and Escape key has to be relocated. That can be as simple as mapping your layer key to change backspace into delete. For winkey I just removed it completely, I never use winkey. However if you need it you can have a layer toggle to switch between a work and a gaming layout. I also took full advantage of my mouse. Middle click used to pull out knife. Scroll down for jump, and Scroll up to drop my weapon (if your scroll wheel accidentally scrolls sometimes these binds could cause issues in games). Used the 2 side buttons for abilities. The biggest issue with these small layouts is work and dealing with infrequently used symbols. Its so hard to remember where you put your symbols on the alternate layer because you don’t use them that often.

I'm one of those guys that turns my keyboard to a crazy angle to game because its less stress on my wrist to get to the WASD keys. i've been loving my 40% ortho board for gaming because i can keep the board straighter since the W is directly above the S key. I'm also the type to have weapon switch on scroll wheel so the number row is significantly less important to me than some.
@WARnTEA
@WARnTEA 9 ай бұрын
@@vinnieb977I feel like a popular company could get ortho adopted by the masses if they sold it as an advantage for gaming. I feel like this is a huge issue that ortho has, you can’t really convince people to adopt ortho just for health reasons. Its a bit like taking medicine. The medicine is good for you but people hate taking it if it tastes bad. They need something extra like peanut butter or sugar added to it to get people to actually adopt it. There are a couple different benefits that ortho brings to gaming, someone just needs to properly design and communicate to customers about these features. Also I feel like gamers are way more likely to put effort into relearning how to type because they are used to changing their keybinds semi frequently, compared to a normal person that hasn’t changed the way they type since they learned in a typing class 10+years ago.
