Poland is one of Ukraine's biggest allies in its war against Russia.
Why is Poland so involved in somebody else's war? Why do they care?
Poland has some really unfortunate geography that led it to getting invaded time and time again throughout the years. So much so, in fact, that Poland was wiped off the map several times.
From its mythical origins to the modern era, Poland's history is a valiant story of struggle and preservation.
Let's set sail for Poland! The tragic country.

1:26 Fun fact, Emperor of holy Roman empire, Otto 3, planned to give Mieszko 1 his crown and make Poland second empire which would be responsible for eastern europe, but Otto died soon after his visit in poland and his ancessor decided "well, if poland is so mighty and rich, why won't I steal its goods? I can rule whole world" so he atttacked Poland (or wanted to attack it) and this is how Polish-german relationship begins... xD

@@KnowledgeRaiders This fun fact is getting even more funny: there`s this theory that in case of emperor`s death Bolesław The Great was considered by Otto as his second heir after count Ekkehard. After Otto died and soon after Ekkehard was murdered Bolesław was supposed to rule in Aachen which would make him some kind of new version of Charlemagne and in fact he had support of part of German nobility. Unfortunately Henry II was elected as a german king, Otto`s idea died and that`s how almost quarter of century period of wars between Germany and Poland started

That three brothers story is always so weirdly funny to me. So they all went on a family hunting trip, wandered off between like, 600-1200 KM away from one another and just set down roots right there and then See my understanding was that the purpose of a hunting trip was to come back. They created Ukraine(At the begginign it was Ukraine-ruś after some time only Ukraine was left). Everybody make that mistake.

Two fun facts: After the battle of Grunwald the Pope cursed whole Poland, and to this day every Christian church and everything about it doesn't matter, which makes everyone unable to go to heaven in Poland. Also Poland's current anthem is trash, as we had a 3x better anthem many years ago that had a lot of lyrics based off how much Poland had to fight for independance. Its named ,,Rota", and it is Infuriating becouse it would be better as an Anthem, but it has a one line saying something like: ,,Germans wont spit in our faces, neither germanize our children". 1. There was no Warsaw for Mongolians to conquer in 1241 :) 2. Casimir the Great didn`t unite Poland, his father did - Władysław Łokietek ("The elbow-high") 3. Casimir didn`t donate Silesia to the HRE, he just formally accepted the fact that local dukes (his far cousins from Piast dynasty) accepted King of Czechia (who happened to be also Holy Roman Emperor) as their overlord (which happened in times of Władysław Łokietek). 4. It was Łokietek who allied Lithuanians - Casimir mostly continued his policy in this matter. 5. Successor of Casimir was Hungarian king Louis the Great, he ruled in Poland for 12 years. Who happened to be a nephew of Casimir - his mother was Casimir`s sister), and Jadwiga was daughter of Louis who succeded him on the Polish throne (while her sister - as Louis had no sons - inherited other land of Louis - Hungary and Croatia).

When russians finally menaged to push poles to capital (Warsaw), everyone in country headed there to defend it. Poles succeded and that is known as "Miracle on the Vistula" and Battle of Warsaw. I believe this battle is actually on list of "crucial battles in world history" (stopped bolsheviks plans to expend communism to western europe), u can see this list on google or wikipedia for example!

Winged Hussars weren't from hungary, they were recruited from among Polish nobility and they were heavy cavalery rather than light cavalery. Also they were created when gunpowder was already present and widely used, the Winged Hussars did not decline becouse they became obsolete, but rather becouse the heavily damaged economy simply wasn't capable of fielding them anymore since they were so darn expensive.

Rus' ended up as Ruthenia which later broke up into Russia, then Ukraine, and Belarus. I am very happy since you mentioned Lechia, very uninformed part of our history which involves people like Princess Wanda, Krakus, and Lestek I from the Chronicles of Greater Poland. One note: Poland after it's invasion of Moscow forced itself as Tsar, and hence Russia was our puppet for around 3 years. During those 3 years, Poland would be around 5,900,000-to-6,500,000 Million Kilometres big, this would make it 15-to-16 biggest Empire in history counting our puppet's land mass into ours as most historians do, especially with the Ottoman Empire which had a lot of puppets. Second note: I am not sure if you mentioned the Wołyń massacre yet as I am not fully done with the video, but if you ever make a video about Poland during WWII alone. You need to mention Wołyń massacre, it was the most brutal massacre against Poles in history, and it was done by Ukrainian nationalists lead by Stephan Bandera.. which many modern Ukrainians still worship as a hero. Ukrainians need to get some knowledge through their thick boned skull because they are dumb, and uneducated since their government is led by Nazis which support Stephan Bandera's national hero status.

Overall video was excellent, however I’d like to correct few things. Warsaw was a small village during Mongol invasions and Masovia was never sacked, because then it was a desolate backwater. Silesia was lost in XIV century when in 1296 Polish king Przemysł II was killed and Bohemians invaded claiming the vacant throne for themselves. Later on Casimir the Great accepted the loss to maintain good relations with Luxemburgs in Bohemia which were emperors at the time. Poland actually defeated all the invaders during the Deluge, but it was a Pyrrhic victory. The loss of Smoleńsk and eastern Ukraine was due to the former being returned to Russia as a form of reconciliation and the latter being carved up as a punishment for the Cossacks (Poland was exhausted after decades of war and couldn’t make a better deal). Polish army was still strong during the war of holy league and its problem wasn’t the lack of gunpowder. Polish infantry was equipped with guns. The problem was that the Sejm had to impose taxes and agree on them as well as gathering an army. After the death of king Jan III Sobieski in 1696 it became infeasible. The last error is that actually Duchy of Warsaw won a war against Austria and regained the third partition territory, not just that the Austrian did retreat. The rest of the video was super entertaining and I give it a like!

No, the winged hussars were not light cavalry, that's completely wrong. And you ahve completely skipped over the political causes of the partitions. Not even mentioning that this is a result of democracy

There's only so much information I could fit in a short video. The distinction between "Heavy" and "Light" cavalry is hazy in the grey areas. The Winged Hussar had its beginnings as light cavalry and then added more armor as time went on.

Poland's history is by no means exceptional. Look at any country in Cenral Europe and you will see that they have all disappeared at some point and often for far longer periods of time than Poland. Croatia? Check. Serbia? Check.Bulgaria? Check. Albania? Check. Hungary? Check. Czechia? Hehe check. Not to mention all the nations that did not have a statehood up until 20th century but as ethnic minority they have survived to this day. And many of those have been discriminated agins by the same poor Polish, most notably Ukrainians, Belarussians, Latvians and Estonians. So if the Polish are notable for anything it's because it's one of the very few nations that have been both a colonizer an a colony.

Description of winged hussars very vague and very inaccurate as they were a whole sorta social/political class highly made up of Polish Noblemen. I guess it is a short video however and really good nevertheless. Nice watch :)

Rus didn't end up as Russia, Kievan Rus was Rus, Rus was not Russia, it was a kingdom long before Russia and Muscovit'es where where Russia came from (small backwater town at time of RUS), Russia claimed name Russia to steal Rus history for itself.
@KnowledgeRaiders
@KnowledgeRaiders Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. Kievan Rus was a medieval state that existed in Eastern Europe from the late 9th to the mid-13th century. It was a powerful and culturally rich state that played a significant role in the development of Eastern Europe. The name Rus was derived from the Varangian tribes that settled in the region and formed the ruling class of Kievan Rus. Later on, the name Russia was adopted by the Grand Duchy of Moscow, which eventually became the Russian Empire. The claim that Russia stole the name Rus to appropriate its history is a contentious issue, but it's clear that the two are distinct entities with their own unique histories. Thanks for bringing this up!

CORRECTION someone else's war? NOT somebody else's war? Learn the difference in meaning better some'one' and some'body' The emphasis is on ""One"" Write an essay on the importance - significance and meaning of the word " One ' My youngest students age 8 successfully completed this essay - Something you would not be capable;e of doing - as they are academically more advanced than you. Begin your essay with the line One is the Cardinal number Undertake an extensive reading program to educate yourself and it will improve your knowledge of the English language and increase your vocabulary. Read books by accomplished authors. Also visit the nearest cemetery and count the number of 'bodies' there. Take note of what is written on the gravestone and pay attention to HOW it is written - Then compare what you see with your commercial instruments. Write a reply and explain the connection and what you learned. That is your homework project.

@0:28 Rus and Russia are two totally different things. The legend does not refer to the creation of Russia. To this day, despite centuries of intents Russification, Rus and Russian are totally different languages. Russians, without learning it, can't understand Rus language. Principality of Muscovy, deliberately created for itself a new name sounding very closely to Rus, so it could claim it historic heritage. The legend refers to Rus, the territories of today's Belarus and Ukraine, only. Rus language is so very closed to the Polish language that as a rule, it is not necessary to study Polish or Rus in order to understand each other. Russia was created in the middle of XVI century. .

Poland was never know as Lechia. The legent is very recent, and was used by polish nobility (around XVII century) to make themselfes more.. noble I guess? The whole idea of Lechia is fake. It was always Poland and the Polanie tribe uniting other slavic tribes.

i mean video was really cool ngl. The story fo three brothers if ofc fully mythical because Slavs where there since the Roman Empire and story is prolly as old as it gets i really wonder what were the origins of names like Lech and others because Slvas had now writing system like we know today they had runes but no writing i mean Really old languages like arabic or persian and others old mostly middleeastern languages are calling Poland - Lachistan or Lehistan it meant the land of Lords/land of gods. I'm not exaggerating and that is really interesting why it was and still is called like that. I used persian for that example but there are others simillar but meaning is same. And second thing in this video history sound like Poland was under threat of stopping to exist every 100 years which is not true but w/e who want to know will check it anyway i mean more positive history. You should've mention 1920 PL-soviet war in 3-4 sentences when we stopped spread of communism at it start of thinking of expanding

Glad you liked it!!!! Yes, we did leave out a lot of other incidents in history. It's difficult to explain every single incident of a country in one short video, there are entire university curriculums on Polish History. At the end of the day, we wanted to explain why Poland was taking its hyper-vigilant stance about Ukraine/Russia and had to pick and choose relevant events in history.
