Really enjoyed the tier list, thank you, liked and subscribed. Of the games you haven't played, the one that stands out to me most is Griftlands. I've played just about every roguelike deckbuilder and I'd consider it my second favourite after STS (though I've played more Monster Train than Griftlands.) Griftlands absolutely nails the presentation, great visuals and music, while having better writing and story than its contemporaries. It's legitimately funny and heartfelt at times, with incredibly good worldbuilding. And as a deckbuilder, it's well done, with a good amount of variety. It's not the most challenging game in the genre but that's okay, I think. Highly recommend it.

Revita blew me away when I played it. It doesn't innovate too heavily on any specific mechanics, but the execution was done so well that I easily played it all the way through. It feels surprisingly underrated, or just more unknown, than other games with how good quality of a game it is. Can't wait for 2.0 on console.

It's amazing just how many roguelikes there are out there, that I'm able to think of so many that whoever was putting the pictures on the tierlist didn't even think of. Muck, A whole slew of traditional roguelikes that weren't brought up (like Caves of Qud, Dungeonmans, Dungeons of Dredmor, or ADOM), Hyperrogue, a whole slew of vampire survivor clones that weren't brought up (like Soulstone Survivors, Crafty Survivors, or Nomad Survival), a whole slew of roguelike deckbuilders that weren't brought up (like Touhou: branch of legend, Across the Obelisk, Death Roads, Urban Cards, or Neoverse), Choice Chamber, Killing Room, Road Redemption, Astrea: Oracle, Vivid Knight, and I'm sure a bunch more.

@chillociraptor3700

Ehhh ror2 has weird features. The timer is odd and very new player non friendly. Also find it lame that sometimes if your build isn't good enough you can't avoid some attacks. Feels unfair as your build is luck based
@DanteMayCry-qv5kf
@DanteMayCry-qv5kf Жыл бұрын
@Chillociraptor that's how all roguelikes work. Enter the gungeon has that if your guns aren'tgood enough it is very difficult to kill the bosses. And with the attack dodge thing, it is because the game starts to be very chaotic at the end on purpose. It is a great game.

Yeah, he's a pretty big Anti when it comes to it. As someone that can beat a lot of the games without any of the meta progression, I don't get the hate. I'm glad it's there for people that want to beat the game and may not be the best at the game. Are there some on there that is more egregious then others? Yeah sure, but none I'd say that breaks the game. You're gonna unlock any "necessary" meta upgrades while learning the games mechs and enemy patterns anyway.

Circadian dice!! nice!! Thanks for including this! So underrated and under-advertised! Glad to see FTL up there too! Desktop dungeons enhanced btw, is like 10 times better than the rewind version. Unfortunately. Also please play rogue legacy 1 and risk of rain 1. Both S tier for me! Insanely good games. Heard really great stuff about Driftlands and Roguebook but didn't manage to check them out yet! Amazing list overall, I mainly disagree with Hades and Inscryption which I consider masterpieces, but not much else. Which is fine. Check dream quest when you can this is the game that basically paved the path for slay the spire! In a way its brilliant just as circadian dice is, but lacked the graphics to become known!

I totally agree with your point on Skul. I really wanted to like the game, everything about it was appealing, from the visuals, the music and the mysterious story... But playing it is just so dull to me and every run feels like a chore to go through. It feels really bad to say, but I think I can confidently say it's one of the roguelikes I've had the least fun playing.

I suggest you try Vault of the Void. It's a roguelike deckbuilder with a focus on the deckbuilding aspect, that lets you swap out cards between fights and has a deck of fixed size to avoid the 5 cards deck meta of some of the other games of the genre. It also has customizable difficulty parameters for its Ascension equivalent.

My dislike for risk of rain is more of a Tyler issue than a “the game” issue. I just don’t like time based games as I enjoy the puzzley nature of roguelikes where you can take time to make a decision. And anything that’s based on time kinda kills that for me.

As you requested in the video I am asking nicely in the comments about your further opinions on Neon Abyss
@OlexaYT
@OlexaYT Жыл бұрын
It’s just a little nightmare of a game. There’s 400 some items in it but there’s typically 3-4 items that do legitimately the exact same thing. So the amount of unique items is significantly less but they claim to have a ton because they just inflate the number with the same item. The jumping and combat is not smooth, it’s awkward. The runs are way too long, people complained and the devs launched and update that made the runs even longer. They released a paid dlc on the day the game came out with two new characters that were actually fun unlike the characters in the base game. The only redeeming quality of the game was its progression system which rocked. Unlocking paths of new content with no stat based meta progression and just new areas, items, characters, rooms, etc was super cool.

What a herculean task, fab;o) Thx for getting me into Revita, in my top 5 now with Isaac (other games had juat as much iterations, but didn't have to make a "new" game out of it), Atomicrops, Skul (just got a great cheap update, shout out to Beelz) and FitS. RAD is criminally underrated imo, Roguebook (great, but samey), Bio Prototype has more longevity than Brotato, Bombslinger, Has been Heroes and Heart&Slash are fun. Kingdom Eightees was short but great Nostalgia. Ziggurat, Dungeon of the Endless, Thea 1&2, Potion Craft, Deck of Ashes? Cheers!

Trying to remember game i play around 2017-2020 ish. Alien world roguelike where the main feature is if you die and repeat your run, you can modify your limb with robotic or alien body with various effects. Plays exactly like a top down modern shooter ( similar to Synthetik). Not Risk of Rain 2 although the artstyle really similar. Not Returnal as its fully TPS and not top down, but the main concept is quite similar because the player also crash land its ship???? With the whole respawn machine. It's meant to be a single player game, no DLC, no microtransactions, no multiplayer. The game is a pixel-art hybrid between turn-based & real-time combat (in a turn, nothing happens until you take your action, then all other actions happen at the same time - you don't have to wait for individual enemy turns, they go by pretty fast, actually), in a square grid map, so no diagonal movement allowed. It's one of these games that seem criminally simple on the surface, but has such intricate mechanics and decision-making involved if you want to 100% each zone, that it's beautiful. It's super hard too - for example, potions and scrolls all start unidentified, so you don't know what is healing and what is poison until you try it out blindly. There are little to no tooltips, and you must figure out enemy types, moves and patterns on your own. There are dozens of "classes", weapons and items to build around and permanent progression to be made on your homebase. All in all, it's a very nice and complete roguelike for anyone that is craving some but only has their phone around, and I must say it's quite addicting once you learn the ropes.

Hey, you might be just the kind of guy who would enjoy the Shiren the Wanderer games. A lot of the mechanics you listed are present there and make the games incredibly difficult. The games are incredibly polished too. The most recent game, “Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate” Throughout your main campaign, most items will be identified, and enemies aren’t as threatening as in later dungeons. That isn’t to say that they are easy. Each enemy has a unique ability, some more dangerous than others. Don’t let your guard down. Later in the same dungeon you’ll be introduced to a night mechanic that limits visibility and gives you special abilities to deal with enemies at night. Our protagonist, Shiren is pretty simple, starting off with no armor or weapons. Most progression comes from your weapons, Shields, and items. Most pieces of equipment have a unique effect when equipped. Shiren can upgrade his equipment after combat, up to a max level of eight. With each level, Shiren’s equipment can potentially increase -Rune slots- What are rune slots? They are spots that can potentially add passive bonuses to Shiren for -Free- Some upgrades add runes for free, but most of the time they will remain empty unless you Synthesize. Synthesis is a process where you combine two different weapons or shields (with exceptions) to get runes onto equipment through synthesis pots, or a special enemy called “Mixers” Like mentioned before, there is a night mechanic. Not all dungeons utilize it, but when they do, it’s important to be aware of it. The night flips combat on its head, weapons are useless against night monsters, dealing a fixed damage of one. Shields don’t do much better. Most monsters can one shot at night, even with a good shield. Torches are equipped by hand and can help mitigate a lot of the damage and increase visibility, but does not increase damage. Night combat is reliant on your abilities, which are single-use and only replenish each floor. Monsters can’t see at night either, so the best thing to do is to book it to the next floor or wait until day. Unfortunately, aside from the main campaign, there is no real progression in the game, the only real type of progression, comes from the night abilities you can learn over the course of multiple runs. Otherwise, your item book and monster book unlock descriptions based on collection and defeat respectively. The main campaign is fairly easy, but most of the difficulty comes from the optional dungeons. Most with a unique gimmick. Too many to easily list off. I urge you to give them a try on steam, switch, or PS4. There’s even a new entry that will be coming soon in February if you’re willing to start there. I’m sorry if this ends up being hard to read, it’s late as I’m writing this. Shiren is so niche and I’m a huge fan of the series. I’d love to get more eyes on the franchise.

I have the same problems with Crypt of the Necrodancer and One Step from Eden, even though I'm not a content creator. They're both fun to play, but I just cannot play them, because they literally do not give me time to think, and I can't deal with that when I'm playing a game with complex decisions. Games that are the same pace as those two but aren't roguelikes are generally fine for me. I can deal with rhythm games , intense action games, and intense online pvp games just fine, but for some reason, you put fast-paced action of that tempo into a roguelike with complex decisions, and I just cannot play it. I'd probably have the same problem with something like Bullets Per Minute, but I haven't played it, yet.

I am surprised at how low you rated Blazing Beaks, but, at the same time, not that surprised. If I were making one of these tierlist videos, my hottest take would probably be putting Blazing Beaks just above where you put Forward: Into The Fold. I love that game way more than I probably should? I don't know why, but playing that game just never gets boring, no matter how repetitive it gets (not that it gets very repetitive in the first place). I simply love the core gameplay loop way too much. As an example, I'll play Isaac for an hour or two before getting either bored of it or frustrated and wanting to do something else, but I'll play Blazing Beaks for 3 hours and not get bored at all (getting frustrated in it only makes me want to play more), only stopping due to fear of wasting all my time away.

I thought I was the only one who liked Slice & Dice, none of my friends have ever mentioned it. Was a little disappointed that you haven’t played NetHack (goes in Solid Game for me but the one variant I’ve played, GnollHack, would fall under I Love It- is that a terrible thing to say? I prefer how spellcasting works in GnollHack, it feels more interesting, and the customizable difficulty means I can actually access more of the game), but this makes up for it. I don’t know if I need to watch the rest of the video considering how few modern roguelikes / roguelites I’ve played due to my aversion to non-turn-based / real-time games, lol, but yeah

I almost completely agree on Wizard of Legend. I probably wouldn't rate it *that* low, probably above Lone Ruin and Curse of the Dead God, but not much higher. It is overrated to all hell, and I know exactly why. Actually, maybe it'd be one of the games i would put in the "not for me" tier, because I do understand why people like it. The spell system is fun. That's literally it. It's actually a pretty good combat system. I guess it can easily get samey, especially since you can create your own loadout before even starting a run, but it's still pretty good, despite that. The part of the game that I truly dislike is literally everything else. The dungeon designs are atrocius, the enemies are boring, the bosses are meh, and the lore is a snooze-fest (not that that part really matters much in a roguelike)

I am kinda late to this but you should definitely give soul knights a try! I only play on my phone (Dont have a pc) and its honestly one of the best games out there, near gaurdian tales and terraria in greatness imo, i never really tried any other roguelike other than brotato so idk how it fairs with the games that are listed on the tier list but it will probably stay as one of the best for me purely because of how much time i put into it without getting bored it still has some p2w mechanics tho like all mobile games and it is in the form of needing to buy some of the characters with rl money (you could still play with them using a voucher you find while paying) but other than that its pretty fair

TIME TO GO TO BAT FOR IN CELEBRATION OF VIOLENCE Seriously, I did play it a lot and enjoy it, but I concede that it's a really esoteric little pixel game that kind of wants to be Dark Souls but has no idea how to explain itself. It's better than the bottom of the barrel IMO, but definitely no S tier or probably even A tier. It is a very slow game that you need to sort of plan your moves in advance with because everything is so plodding. Also, where's Barony? Barony is great. Also also, despite my dissenting opinions, I love this video and 90% of the ones on the channel. Going to sub after writing this to prove it. You rule, buddy.

Soul knight is a silly little game. It manages to give the most op stuff that you can throw at enemies that don't even seem good at the start. Like, a literal piece of meat can become one of the best weapons in the game. A regular random low rarity ass axe is one of the best speedrunning weapons. Hell, a brush is one of the best weapons in the entire game. And the best part is while you are op, id you slip up you will be punished heavily. Put that next to a charming artstyle and banger music (and different modes like a tower defense rpg and a boss rush mode ro refresh gameplay) and a metric fuckton of customization and you have a really fun game.
