I've seen saffron sold in spice bottles at around $12 CAN, which is understandable given the crocus' limited growth time in early spring. It's truly a rare seasoning!

There's legit saffron in the stores too. But you're talking $10-25 for just a few threads in a glass jar, usually 1-3 grams. Costco sells 14 grams for $80, which comes out to $5,714 a kilogram.

A really cool trick I learned from my Persian friends is, after you make the rice (without saffron) you take 1/4 of the rice and add saffron to it. Then you mix it in with the remainder of the plain rice. It makes the presentation beautiful. The plain rice is flecked with beautiful golden rice. It tastes, smells and looks delicious. Always cook up Saffron with water. Fats play against bringing out the richest colors.

Gotta factor in junk like manual labor, packaging, shipping/export costs etc. The closer you are to a product the cheaper it'll usually be anyway because you can cut down on that stuff or are in a climate where you can just grow it urself.

jr4chargers it's a very distinctive taste, in milk I boil it briefly but put a few strands in whilst it is cold, then stir it gently the colour and flavour spreads definitely a 👍 up. Try it then if you need to put sugar in use brown sugar unrefined and avoid white as it is heavily processed.

It was only ever Saffron in relation to Iran. No facts of information about saffron itself. Just: "Iran Saffron best saffron!" "Iran has biggest shares of Saffron!" "Iran is perfect for growing saffron!" Oh wait I take it back, towards the end he buzzfeed clickbaits everything that Saffron can do that it doesn't really.

There's a flaw in what that person said. Iran produces maximum amount of saffron but the best quality of saffron is from Kashmir in India.

Saffron produced in Kashmir, India is best ranked. Not saying bad to Iran's saffron. But quality matters over quantity.

I imagine the farmers make enough for the year for that one week of work, but that years worth of income is probably less than a dollar a day or something. We in the West take a lot of this type of luxury for granted

The farmers don't just work for 1 week. These farms usually grow other crops besides saffron. The farmers don't own the farms, they don't have any shares, they get a monthly salary.
