An American Airlines passenger jet carrying 64 people collided midair with a military helicopter while approaching Reagan National Airport in Washington.
Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas stated all 67 people aboard both aircraft are feared dead with authorities confirming that none of the helicopter’s three crew members were senior Army officials.

This could have been far worse, if it happened over buildings rather than over water there would have been a hell of a lot of people on the ground killed too. Unbelievable this could have happened given the proximity to an airport where all aircraft are under strict control of the airport ATC.

They should revisit the idea of the Thames Estauary Airport, located away from London to the east. 4 runways running 24 hours a day would support London's aviation needs for at least 100 years. Third runway at Heathrow is a sticky plaster solution and they'll have the same capacity problems in 30 years. Not to mention the danger of increasing air traffic in a built up area - just look at the DC crash this week.

Doing their job. They asked the helicopter repeatedly if it had the aircraft insight. Twice it confirmed it did, unfortunately it seems it was a another aircrafts lights it had insight. My first opinion is it seems to be pilot error on the helicopter pilot.

The jet was on short final at 400 feet, the military training flight had been made aware by ATC of the jet, then it ran into the jet. Helicopters have priority across the river from their base opposite the air port. There may have been confusion on the radio call with the jet taking off being misidentified as being the AA jet about to land. It’ll be human error and not the civilian airline ,who was where he was supposed to be and at 400 feet had nowhere to go even if was aware of the helicopter. The chopper was on the collision course, the jet had its landing lights and nav lights on and it’s transponder. Must assume at the moment that helicopter pilots just didn’t see the plane.

I just listened to them. The chopper pilot requested visual separation after confirming he had jet in sight, not a good idea at night with lots of light pollution. Before this, ATC changed the a jet from Runway 33 to 31. I think it's possible the chopper pilot was looking at the wrong plane. Just a bit of a guess based on my limited knowledge and having flown military choppers into cities and civil airports. My condolences to those affected by this sad tragedy

This was an atc cause, records show millatary craft was on different frequency which is typical of military craft , and did respond they. Should never have been in the same air space yet the air craft changed runway , no hold and hover order was given , visual it was night and clearly they didn’t see , each other . The Helicopter should not have been there- that is the only logical explanation. So was it hijacked by one of the crew members who was suicidal or prone to extremism? The plane was coming into land on a designated plan. Air traffic control are also at fault- this should never have been allowed to happen- they must have known the Helicopter was in air space used by commercial airliners to land.
