I just noticed that in episode 13 season 4, when Kate and Mark are eating in a dinner with Rebecca, he is talking about quitting his job at the record store because the manager was giving him a hard time about his smoking breaks. Now , 20 years later, his boss is scolding him about the same thing. I love how the show portraits him as someone who is stuck and will never grow up or learn from his mistakes.

Some people need to confront their abuser as adults for closure and some don’t. The fact that through the show she went from only focusing on her weight issues to processing and starting to work through the trauma that caused it and kept the cycle going. I hope we end up with someone in the family talking her into starting therapy so she’s able to learn the healthy communication/copying mechanisms/self talk that is needed for her. Which would allow us to see the process and change with her too.

For the people who say that this doesn’t happen in real life or there are “better” ways to deal with something, I think you’re missing the point. The three siblings are very damaged and they’re dealing with their pain (and now with their healing process) in different ways and for different reasons. It’s logical that they do it with different methods too. Although I’m a big fan of therapy, and I eventually thought all the Pearson family needs therapy, I understand that Randall is in therapy but Kate is dealing with her pain in another way. And that’s ok because that’s real life. There are not better ways to heal because we’re all different and need different things. We don’t even approach trauma in the same way, so it’s possible that we don’t heal in the same way. If a person needs to face their demons by talking to people from their past, it’s ok, but at least I wouldn’t do it. I know people who have done it, and it’s being incredibly healing for them and I’m happy for them. In Kate’s case, I love that Toby didn’t even question her need to face her ex. And he waited for her in the car. That’s what we all need: that in the middle of our healing process, somebody supports us in whatever we need to do to heal.

Honestly, as a therapist I have made the recommendation that they write letters to their abuser. Because even if you don’t actually mail it, you are still letting go of some of your anger and hurt by telling them. It’s actually empowering to tell your abuser how they hurt you.

This is like a thing one fantasizes about but not a thing one does. Like, sure we've all fantasized about finding an annoying ex from 20 years ago and in our fantasy they still work at the same dead-end job they had when they were a teenager and they haven't evolved at all and we give them a real piece of our mind and drop the mic at the end... But that's not a thing that happens in real life is it?

I know just what you mean. I don’t think it happens often but a year ago my ex that emotionally destroyed me for 4 years - lying, cheating, codependency, using me as an emotional side chick when he started dating another girl, telling me he was still in love with me while he was with her, etc. - walked into my work after I hadn’t seen or heard from him in 2 years. He ran outside but I followed him to let him know that even though he left me in pieces I was now happily engaged, and that seeing him I knew that I was done with him forever. He told me he thought about me every single day and he would never be able to move on. I walked away knowing he meant it. When the universe gives you closure like that, it’s rare... but it does happen.

This scene was made thinking of what every person who came out from a bad relationship wants to do. I agree with K Malk that it would have been deeper if Marc was actually a good person but I think that is going to be more in Randall's story. If you look at from further back they are hitting many different "person from the past" archetypes: Sophie, who went on with her life and moved on; Nicky, who was destroyed and haunted by his past; Marc, who stayed the exact same and Laurel, who knows what's going to happen there. They had to bring Marc back like this because he was such trash and clearly incapable of growth, reminded me of "Riding in Cars with Boys" a bit. Side note: The actor who plays Marc is now on Netflix in a show where he plays a decent human and I didn't buy it for the first couple of episodes. Kept thinking: "You are not tricking anyone Marc!"

When I was 17 I went out with a dude who was 26, he was a grown man and like Kate I was mourning the death of my grandmother, my grandfather and a horrible family environment because of it. He worked at a music store, he used to sell t-shirts and thats how we met. Later my father find out he used to have sexual relationship with teenage girls, (the youngest of them was 13), he liked little girls and unexperienced girls, like me. He took advantaged of my unexperience and of my naivety. He put me against my family who was grieving, against my classmates and against a lot of things I stood for. A few years after we broke up he texted me and we talked for hours, and he told me that there was something going on between us even after all those years. I told him I would never be with him again, it took me years to get over the pain and the hurt he put me throught. After all these years he was the same loser as before, working at the same place, a grown man going after teenagers. However after that talk I felt so good, it was better than therapy, I didn't care if he cared about what I said to him, just telling him those things out loud and having him listened was enought for me. This scene it's not unrealistic, at least not for me.

I totally get what the writers were trying to go for, but this scene kinda bothered me. I mean, I get that their relationship really affected her, but it's been 20 years. For both of them. There is no reason to think he hasn't changed as well. It's crazy to just burst into someone's life and tell them all these things. This scene showed us that his life is still similar to when he was younger, unlike Kate, who is happily married and surrounded by her loved ones. But it doesn't show us anything more than that. No, I don't feel sympathy for Marc, but it seem unfair of her to just drop all of this on him and walk away.

I don't. He's a creep and no telling how many other women's lives he had messed up since Kate. He flat told her he went after her because her realized she was vulnerable. I actually thought Kate was too nice. She should have told him she aborted his child. Let him feel some of that guilt she had carried for over 20 years.
@fishstick61283 жыл бұрын
But he mentally and emotionally abused her and took advantage of her and even after 20 years he reminisces about how great their relationship was because she was "broken". And he, a grown man, got her, a teenager, pregnant so its clear he was also sexually using her when he wasn't even physically attracted to her. It might had been 6 months for him but its carried through to her adulthood. I think its fair that he should understand what he did to a child so young and naive

I’ve never liked the character of Kate because she’s always been a victim. She’s always been whiny, but in this episode by confronting him she was able to take her power back and that is what she needed to do. Also, it would’ve been different if Mark came at it from a different perspective like he acknowledged what he did but he totally just glossed over it like he didn’t do anything wrong.

If someone is over someone else, they don't need to go all that distance, seek them out and tell them that. If you're over someone and the trauma they brough to you, you just don't have this need, you're just over it, you're not giving it any more of your energy and time than you already did. If she needed to go tell him that, it means she was still not over that till this very scene which is of course sad.

I've never watched the show but picking up from what's presented... I hope she isn't meant to be a role model. I've suffered the aftereffects of a broken relationship as well - years - just like her character. But I became stronger, i didn't harbor it or need someone else's validation to move on. This is kinda pathetic. Clearly she isnt over him and that's her problem, not his.

What Kate does in this scene is what anyone who cares enough about themselves and about changing their life for the better should do. You do not allow toxic elements to remain in your life because as long as those elements do remain you cannot and will not be able to progress and move forward. Her ex-boyfriend Marc is a toxic element that she desperately needed to let go of and be rid of. After twenty long years he is still in the same position... the same rut that he was twenty long years before. It is painfully obvious he has no desire whatsoever to improve himself and make his life better and I pity the next woman who is foolish enough to get involved with him because he will drag her down just like he did to Kate.

I really don't get the point of Kate telling Toby about her past. Or why she felt the need to confront Marc. It's the past!!!! You learn from a bad relationship then you move forward. What's the point of dredging it all up? Was she looking for remorse on his part, an apology? You cut toxic people out of your life and never look back. Why rummage through the garbage once it's in the dumpster? And what's the point of Randall's new storyline since his mother is dead? More hurt? , another parent who was alive and never wanted to know him? Wish Randall could have taken 5 more minutes with Kevin to make amends. And Madison, she does not have to travel with him. It's all so simple.

Wtf ? Past isn’t so easy to move on. I, personally, am dealing with my father’s toxic behavior. It’s been 2 years since I’ve never seen him and I feel like he have so much power over me even if he’s not here. Whenever I’m ready, I will sure confront him about all the horrible things he did. I think she was so brave!

@@enzolcv486 Well everybody is different. I cut toxic people who have treated be badly out of my life and I have never looked back. I don't get doing what Kate and you need to do but everybody has to do what is right for them. My opinion was just that.

@@enzolcv486 So, when you're ready, you're going to go up to him like Kate did and give him a real piece of your mind and drop your mic? And then what, he'll apologise? It doesn't work that way in real life. I feel like this is a poor portrayal. There's way more that goes into to mending relationships. Something about this was really off. It seemed rushed.

@@topsecret5110 do you really think I got inspired from Kate’s reaction? And was like oh okayy, will do the same.. No. I just always knew that whenever I’m ready, I need him to hear all the things I have to say to him. How is this unrealistic?!? It just needs time to process all the things you’ve gone through and whenever you’re ready you let him carry the weight he make you carry. This has nothing to do with apologies, trying to show how someone has been abusive your entire live can wake him up and shook him because sometimes people think they had a correct behavior but they’re not, maybe it will change nothing but if we feel like doing it to move on, what’s the problem.

I know Kate wanted to expel her personal demons by confronting Marc, but this scene rubbed me the wrong way. Rather than feeling happy for Kate having an empowering moment telling off her abusive ex, I actually felt sympathy for Marc seeing how much he hasn't changed from years ago. The scene came across as Kate looking down on him, basically mooning how better off she is now compared to him. Its made more evident on the ride back when she tells Toby how Marc "looked so small," wore a "stupid t-shirt" and had "empty dreams" like wtf. Kate looked so snobby in that moment. Like girl I know you have issues, but you have an amazing support system of family and friends who will be there for you. Don't know if I can say the same about Marc. I know what the writers were intending to do, but what they ended up also doing was making me hope that there's a tiny bit of redemption for a pos like Marc. Now I'm hoping they visit his side of the story more in depth, but sadly, I don't think they will

This whole scene was so cringey and unrealistic. All I can think is that guy in reality would laugh right in her face, make some really hurtful fat jokes and call her pathetic for coming to him with that nonsense 20 years later and be completely dismissive of her hurt feelings. I'm sorry but the little 6 month relationship she had with this dude is like a drop of water in a lake. Move on. Most women came across at least one "loser" in their lives that was also damaged. Confronting them is not going to give you this satisfaction, it is more than likely going to make you more upset because it meant more to you than it ever meant to them. The sound of his laughter as you walk away trying to keep your chin up would be deafening.

Well would you rather we wait a whole year, or longer, until the next season? They are incorporating COVID to wear masks in scenes so they are safe. We can’t be so selfless to say “god I wish they wouldn’t put reality into this fictional show for my sake” and have them risk their health or someone else’s. I’m thankful we still get new episodes with the safety measures they are taking.
