Linda Ronstadt said once in an interview that singing with Dolly and Emmylou was almost like a religious experience because the harmonies came so naturally and almost intimately. All three girls knew intuitively when and how to set their voices. Another great analysis, Fil. Cheers.

From the documentary on Linda and they said from the 1st time they sang together in one of their homes, and that it was magical how they were able to blend right from the start. They all are the opposite of Divas, and not only are great vocalists, they are "humble and kind" to quote Tim McGraw. Documentary is worth a look. "The Sound of My Voice"

I was spending the summer of 1976 driving the coast highway on my motorcycle. August 3rd I found myself in Oakland in the front row staring up at the gorgeous Linda Ronstadt. She had a white dress and a very unassuming manner. My god she could sing. She closed the set with Desperado. So sad she can’t sing anymore. She has helped so many people I hope she’s surrounded by love.

Absolutely stunning. They sing a song called “High Sierra” that is beyond beautiful. Simply done with a couple of guitars and their voices are the instruments. Too beautiful for words. Their harmonies can bring tears while Linda’s deeper voice sings the major part of the melody. Thanks Fil for another great analysis. Linda is magical.

I saw Emmylou perform in a smallish theater about 10 years ago. Her voice live is mesmerizing to the point of giving you goosebumps. John Prine joined her for the second half of the show and it was really extraordinary to hear them perform together.

Emmylou has been one of the most generous celebrity musicians, fully willing to sing backup without needing to dominate. Linda pulls my heart strings regardless which genre she chose. Dolly was amazing at every age. I loved her when she was along with Porter Wagner in Southern Missouri, so accessible and sweet.

Thanks for doing this analysis on these great ladies. The 3 of them performed this song together on Dolly's show in 1976. They later collaborated together on a few albums. The first Trio album from 1987 is great & showcases the lovely voices of these talented ladies. Lots of great songs such as "To Know Him Is To Love Him", "Telling Me Lies", "Those Memories Of You", "Wildflowers" etc. They did a 2nd album Trio II in 1999. It also has many hit songs such as "After The Goldrush", "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind", "Feels Like Home" etc.

@@Psalm1267 Oddly, "Mr. Sandman" was not on either of the _Trio_ albums, but on Emmylou Harris's 1981 album _Evangeline._ "Mr. Sandman" and the title track, "Evangeline," were recorded by the three in 1978, but single versions of these songs could not be released because the labels that they were recording for could not come to an agreement. Emmylou Harris did release a single of an alternative version of "Mr. Sandman" where she sang all the parts herself.

ELH has one of the most distinctive voices I've ever heard. Her harmony on "Walk Through the Bottomland" with Lyle Lovett is a great example. The first time I heard the song, I knew with the first note that it was her. That distinct quality of her voice makes her a fantastic harmony vocalist.

Again, this analysis just fascinating . I have this video in my collection, and as mentioned I was delighted and mesmerized by the lack of 'star' power in any of these voices. This was three distinct voices singing in a choir, a gregorian chant with a subtle southern accent! A second point. I totally forget this was live until the applause at the end, because the audience discipline equally tight. Nobody in that crowd decided to contribute a yell of 'encouragement', a shout, or any form of vocalization. None of these audience members were so self indulgent as to distract the rest by becoming a guest contributor for posterity with a 'yeah' or 'whoa' screamed from the cheap seats. I really missed that now.

Thanks for a great analysis video. These are three legendary singers and we forget just how special their singing is. After watching several of your videos on these singers, I have gone back and listened again to Linda's songs throughout her career. One thing that I find fascinating is her wonderful control of ornaments and grace notes. Whenever she uses them, they are all very appropriate and natural and always enhance the melody of the song, even though the composer didn't write them. This contrasts dramatically with many modern singers, where you just think, stop messing about and just sing the song. And Linda's voice sounds amazing in all genres. I have just been listening to her Christmas songs where she sings in a much higher register with a purity of tone that is beyond compare. A truly stunning singer.

Cathy is a somewhat popular folk type vocalist and instrumentalist….. her father played in BB Kings band for years. Anyway, they wanted to sing Blue Bayou in harmony; so we did. I was brought up on a diet of Linda thanks to my father, I couldn’t get enough. When I was 13 I got chicken pox very badly, & had to miss Judith Durham & the Seekers, which really saddened me. My Dad asked if there was anything I wanted to ease that heartache; I cheekily replied ‘ a guitar’ we were poor, so I was amazed about 3 days later when a basic but perfect for learning, turned up. I wasted no time and could play G C Em D in about 3 days. My Singing teacher was appalled and gave me a piece of her mind at my next lesson! But I joined up with 2 sisters who could both sing natural. One of them was having guitar lessons and she was great, she used to get me going on the rhythm and do lead breaks. We won the local festivals for about three years in a row. A year or so later I was invited to run a folk club and sing in a friend’s parents pub. No pitch correction, it all just happened naturally. That’s just what happened to us Old Hippies ! I used to do songs with anyone that came along and playing & singing was just natural in those days. Sadly now I’m much older and confined to a wheelchair and my voice has suffered very badly due to medical issues (check your latest Celine Dion review). However I’m beginning to hear a little of my voice coming back and picking/strumming is still natural, if painful. For me this was far more pleasing then the Opera I was having my lessons for, although I did enjoy Mozart & love choral singing. Give me these three, Gillian Welch / Dave Rawlings anyday, and I prefer harmony to lead! I used to do actual live pitch corrections for people as I was in and out of studios doing demos. Americana rules !!! Oh yes, me, my wheel chair and an equally ancient musical Companion have tickets for BlackBerry Smoke later this year. The only band I’ve wanted to see in years. I’m pretty sure that Charlie Starr isn’t a fan of pitch correction ! 🎤🐇

Dolly has sang harmony with others since she could sing because she started singing with her mother and siblings. To her, singing with others is just of the joy of life. These ladies admire one another and it shows even here almost 50 years ago. Dolly has said that Linda was the absolute best singer she'd ever heard. I saw Emmylou in Chicago at a small venue, Lincoln Park West. I was next to the stage- I could have touched her (I would have never & would have died if I did) I am that enthralled with her.... She was perfection, her band filled wiith unbelievable talent... Dolly Parton too- small venue, in my hometown of Valparaiso Indiana, this was in her 'plump- pure country era- just before she went mainstream, superstar... she was effervescent& exuded joy. Vol. 2 is one of my favorite albums ever. John Denver, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash, the Dirt Band, John Hiatt, McGuinn/Hillman... and Bruce Hornsby's "Valley Road" as a crazy bluegrass jam. In 1990, I saw Emmy Lou Harris at the Front Row Theater in Cleveland. I snuck myself backstage after the show. I waited until everyone else had gotten their photos and autographs. It was just me, ELH, and her assistant. I couldn’t say anything. I stood in front of her and cried. Then I walked out. Fortunately, I was able to meet her 3 other times in the next 10 years, and we laughed about it. 🙂 I rode my Harley from Little Rock to Atlanta to see a “Trio” concert, with Linda Rondstat’s cousin filling in for Dolly. I was a Linda Ronstandt fan In H.S. having going back to her albums from the early 70s. Greatest Hits to individual albums. I've watched this performance many times and never tire of it. I always have fun trying to pick out one voice and then switch my hearing to pick out the other voice and finale the third voice when they're all singing at the same time. I find that Emmy Lou's is the hardest of the three to zero in on. It's a fun little challenge. Then I just let my ears hear all three together singing and let three angel voices sooth my mind.

This tender old song is my favorite on the album. It's fun to try to pick out who is singing which part. Fil, you have presented a methodically accurate analysis of this performance. It seems to me, the greatness of this piece is that the singers have mentally placed themselves in a prison, visiting an incarcerated loved one, thus singing, crying, from their hearts. That’s perfection.

It's a perfectly woven cloth, their harmony. This brings back some great memories-- my acapella trio used to perform a couple of their songs, and those songs were very popular with our audience.

Hi Fil. Thanks for another excellent analysis. I love the Trio albums and was surprised you didn’t pick a song from one of those to spotlight as most had more fleshed out instrumentals. . Linda must have perfect pitch. We all know she can belt but I love this more tender vocal. EmmyLou is the queen of harmony. I always like to zero in on her part. Her rhythm guitar is always spot on timing wise. I’m glad you spotlighted the subtleties of her seeming simple style. As for Dolly she always gave the Appalachian authenticy to their sound. Her voice usually dances on top of the others The blend of voices is always so pleasing and makes this trio so special

Thankyou Fil for analysing Emmylou, Linda and Dolly’s performance in their “ Trio” days. Wonderful singing and knowledgeable and thoughtful analysis. I have read that Emmylou is often requested as duet partner because she is so good and so generous towards other singers. She even put out a CD of duets and others have put out compilations of “ singing with Emmylou” . I would love you to do an analysis of her singing and any changes in style as she moved through various periods from singing with Gram Parsons, to the early seventies eg with Vern Gosdin, to her recent collaboration with Mark Knofler. It would be interesting to hear your analysis of how her voice has changed both in terms of time and with different singers. As well as her singing with Linda and Dolly, I enjoy her singing with many male singers , for example , Dave Matthews ( Gulf Coast Highway, My Antonia) Roy Orbison, among many others. Why is she such a prolific duet partner? Is it just longevity of career or is there a particular quality to her singing that other singers seek out?

The same could be said about Linda as a duet singer. She also has an album of her duets. I never saw Linda out sing her partners, always matching their level.
