It took me a long time to realise that a lot of people (adults too, not just kids) aren't really going to see music performed live, but they just want a song and a dance with flashing lights. It might be Disney on Ice, or the ABBA holograms, or sometimes it might be an actual live band - but it doesn't really matter to a lot of people, it's just a spectacle they want. Which is fine, if that's what people want. (Of course, performers shouldn't lie about what they're presenting either!) Taylor swift without digital voice altering is naturally quite pitchy. Generally having wide range on a specific note. And that can be trained in a bit but generally you will still have a decent amount of fluctuations between different performances. Then the timing should never be spot on. Because if she was a fantastic performer she would have a dialogue with the spectators and exchanges both verbal and nonverbal and it’s these nonverbal ones. Like you see the crowd is into it and you run through the last verse and chorus an extra time. Or the chorus one extra time. Or hold a note longer in one performance than in a past one. Maybe the tempo goes up a bit. Or maybe it slows down. The point being is that you honestly can’t have it be identical time and time again. I don’t like going to a concert and then finding out that the live version isn’t any different than the recorded one.

I get that people accept that she’s miming bc it’s impossible to dance and sing to the level she appears to be doing. It’s just another way the music industry marginalises the regular local performers who are amazingly talented in my experience but ppl don’t value them because they aren’t as “good” as these professional packaged performers seem to be. Consequently ppl will pay hundreds to go to a big name performance but won’t even come to the pub to hear a local group. Humans are dumb.

To add to this, people go for the collective experience - all being together in the presence of their idol (a bit like a religion!). A bunch of my work colleagues went to see her at Wembley and were preparing for weeks beforehand, making friendship bracelets to swap with other fans. They didn't stop talking about the experience afterwards either. I agree the music is probably 4th or 5th thing down the list in order of importance for some fans!

There‘s definitely a mix between miming and live vocals in her live performances which is understandable given it’s a 3hr show. It would be interesting to hear more samples from different eras since 1989 is the most pop and „produced“ part of the setlist, compared to eg. folklore, evermore and ttpd

Sometimes fans go to a show simply as an homage to the artist. It's a chance to bow down, and to applaud. The performance is kind of irrelevant - what is important is to be in the same room.

Sadly, I think you are right, generally speaking, about people not caring about hearing the real deal and just want to be part of the experience. What I have also found is that the musicians I interact with on Facebook pages also, generally speaking, don't seem to care about what is happening in the music industry as a whole, repeating the same refrain that "it is what it is" implying there's nothing that can or should be done about it. None of which bodes well for Fil's side project. :(

I am a recent Swiftie. at 76 years of age no less. I also trust Fil to the max, so no pushback from me. However, and this is a big however, I don't see how Taylor's acoustic set/s which contain new mashups at every concert can be mimed. It would only be fair to analyze them and a few other sound files from elsewhere in the concert. I've learned a lot from Fil and agree with him that autotune alone has ruined music. Taylor's genius is in her writing, especially her lyrics, not her singing. On that point I would debate anyone. But it is clearly dishonest to sell tickets based on a live performance which is not live, even if only in part. It amazes me how she can get through this show physically for 3.5 hours night after night, month after month. So this revelation from Fil is not shocking. Just One of many reasons I have decided not to go to any concert like this is the fact that you cannot actually hear the performance over the singing. If that is the case, why have a live concert at all? Taylor is brilliant in many different ways. She needs to be honest about this tour which has created an impossible standard for future artists. So can we revisit this with some other sound files? I have no idea how to capture those, so someone else will have to set Fil up with them.

How sad that someone who exerts as much influence as she undoubtedly does is still lying to her audience... I am so glad I grew up in the 70s when "live" music was actually live and, sometimes, the live albums were better than the studio ones because the artists would always inject a little variety into their performances. Now, everything is cloned to the hilt and you can't possibly be caught singing a "bum note"!
@kallsop23 сағат бұрын
That's what made concerts so good back in the 70's and 80's is that human factor. The lead guitarist plays in a slightly different key, the singer plays with the words for a different effect or feel, or any of the members for that fact. We knew it wasn't going to sound like the album and that's why we were there.

An open society allows analysis and debate like this. Having attended one of the tour stops last night, I am comfortable saying the audience paid for the spectacle of the performance and production. I haven't watched the video yet, but like someone said before, I think I know what I ll see. Fil has commented already on her on previous performances of her, and if she dances a lot, well, that and singing at the same time is complicated. I also don't understand the enthusiasm about her, but I think she can sing, plus she apparently writes, in the opinion of other songwriters, good songs, ans she must have some talent, I guess. Plus she re recorded her first álbum cause of a problem with her record label. And apparently she is very generous in economic terms with the people that work with her. And she has been in this industry for more than 10 years. Yes, not enough to be a true artist, maybe, and if she told the truth about miming/using pitch correction/autotune, most of her fans would probably be ok with that. But there are cases waaaay worse than this.

To quote Fil from another video "As we know, in the music industry now, performing means "moving"". This won't sway the swifties from their near cultish fandom of Taylor. They will gladly shell out how ever much a ticket costs to see her. Sadly, this isn't just the case with Taylor. I think it’s a bit disingenuous for others in the comments to draw a conclusion from this video’s one example that she is miming the entire 3.5 hours she performs on tour. I do think there are songs in her setlist, like Style here, that she relies on a track to perform over to keep her voice healthy for the tour. She sings for the majority and it’s a good time overall. Her fans know she’s a good singer, but not a top tier vocalist. I got good seats for the tour at a decent price. If we’re discussing price issues that should be on the monopoly Ticketmaster has over the industry and allowing dynamic pricing. Yall complain so much about an artist who stays in her lane and puts on a type of show her fans want to see. If that ain’t your style of music/live show then cool. But many in the comments here seem to be foaming at the mouth to validate their dislike or hate of her and her fan base over this. Kinda crazy, but just support your fav artists and get off the hate train you’ll be a lot happier.

The best memories I have are those of the Performances of the last three tours of Tina Turner at 50, 60 and 70. Two hours of singing and dancing show. People like Taylor Swift and many other young self-styled "artists" should be ashamed to go on stage and also get paid.

The pertinent questions here include what do the fans who attend her live performances think about what she is doing and not doing on stage. Do THEY know she's miming? Do they even CARE if she is miming? What would they think about TS miming to a pre-recorded audio file that has been heavily pitch corrected or even autotuned? Do they mind being at a live performance that is depriving them of her beautiful natural voice? Are they okay with all of the hype - real and otherwise - that surrounds her ERAS tour? And, most importantly when it comes to understanding what is happening within the music industry as a whole, are they okay with being deceived. The answers to those questions are the ones that really matter when thinking about how we real music lovers should go about fighting back against the deception and destructive practices that have become the music industry standard operating procedures.
