Reminding us again about tension sources. I tense up in L thigh and hip, sometimes jaw clenching, keeping time with the rhythm. One factor may be we are trying to play faster than what we can control. Slow down and play at a comfortable tempo. Learn it slowly, slower than I would prefer as disciplined approach. Speed up as indicated. Thanks C and all commenters of good will.

I will unload like a Russian novelist later. Right now, I'm itchin' to get to the piano and work on the old and new music, where I am trying to observe your considerations in my own body, old= remedial-lots of extra work, new=starting right on every new piece, avoiding later need for substantial reworking. Glenn Gould notwithstanding, your modeling and ways of teaching are right for 99.99% of all piano pilgrims progressing; Glenn's schtick worked for him due to his extremely unique circumstances. At some point we should be talking about it; either with you as moderator or among ourselves. I would like to see more interaction between your followers/commentators. We can learn from each other's experience in so many dimensions. What a wonderful serendipity to be in the international gang of your followers. That is contemporary demographics, only possible by digital technology. Wonderful! I like to kibbitz with Germany, Indonesia, and elsewhere. Many comments are from very good minds and hearts. We are one big happy dysfunctional family united in our devotion to something of common interest. Let's have fun. Of course, we always are inspired by your newer releases; we understand that you have stuff going on. Hopefully developments that bring more tangible income as an intended side effect of the gifts you are giving away. In the meantime, we will be long time before we exhaust the teachings just to date. Short burst tips are different format but also helpful, always stressing some aspect of the overall technique and it's intents and goals. So, thank you from all of us, once again, and from me on the Left Coast of Oregon. Didn't Craig do a video about in person/online teachers? If it was him, it is eluding me. Now, to.... Dave M

Great video! I really like the point about anxiety as not enough people talk about the mental side of playing. I might also add that not memorising the piece well enough can be a big factor too as it's hard to move around the piano well if your constantly unsure about where you're headed next!

You get it. Not enough focus on this seminal aspect of playing. I guess for understandable reasons but still very much neglected except by a comprehensive thinking great teacher.

Very pleased to have found this mother lode to mine. "Something tells me I'm into somethin' good." Herman? not Melville.

I love your videos, they are a great help in my self taught piano practise. Could you please make a video with some tips to improve my sight reading skills? I feel like i dont make any progress. Greatings from Germany

Do you realize how many of the great artists are somewhat self taught? Sometimes they learned from watching or listening to other players they find compelling. It is serendipity to discover a piano rabbi like Craig with whom to study, and a format which has international reach.

Lots of tension producers; Craig is focusing on it.

I clench my jaw all the time to the point my teeth and mouth hurt after playing. This is more Adrenalin and concentration than anxiety and I just don’t know how to stop it. Also have bad back posture but difficult to correct after years of neglect. I think my keyboard is too high and stool too high to compensate yet if you lower keyboard and stool to next level down knees struggle to get under. Think I will have to by the correct Yamaha body stand

I will add my experience in relation to Craig's lesson. Lots of potential sources of tension and pain.

Midnight Rock-n-Roll Next Door, must be referencing Classical Music Rock and Roll. Those dusty marble busts of Chuck Berry and all.

Playing 2 low= Glen Gould But he was a genious/ savant
@PIANO_LAB Жыл бұрын
But he suffered a spinal injury probably largely to do with the fact that he played so low. It is also speculated that he had dystonia. Most certainly also because of his bad technique. It's amazing to me is that he played so well and for so long before his body finally gave in.
