Concerning him using Kizaru's technique, I don't think that he was, I feel like that was just shiny aura stuff. It reminded me a lot more of Bellamy's attacks, especially with Luffy coiling his legs and literally springing off of the rock towards Kaido after that.

People tend to misinterpret what Luffy can actually do in G5. He can freely manipulate his body and his surroundings, but he can't suddenly shoot laser beams or create lightning. There was one panel in the manga where he seems to grab a pair of sunglasses out of his hair, but I don't if we should interpret that as a gag or as another ability of G5.

So, the animator who did the scene was Ryo Onishi if don't know him he animated all of Goku vs Broly all the way up an till Goku judo throws him. His style is very animation friendly which means that its soft and less detailed so he's able to animate more but his animation conveys weight and character acting is his strong suit so I think it's that and a mix of you already know the giant scene is coming but show this scene to an anime only their reaction will be same as yours was to the manga.

I really like that this episode wasn't as visually busy. I felt the last one had bits that were too difficult to tell what was going on if you hadn't already seen the panels from the manga. Specifically the part were Luffy lifts up the ground to bounce back Kaido's fire.

But there were other moments during the fight with Kaido in 1071 that also felt similarly jarring and hard to follow. And lots of bits where it felt like they made Luffy perform too many ~wacky~ movements in a row without fluid animation between them. Like, I get it, Luffy is cartoonish and has way too much energy and silliness - but the animation just looked clunky and confusing to me.

I love how they portrayed and animated gear 5. Yes it's very wacky, goofy and Tom and Jerry like but it's also very menacing like The Mask (with Jim Carrey). It's like Luffy is an unhinged psycho with literal god powers, someone you wouldn't want to cross with in a dark alley. We as the audience know its Luffy and know how he is but to the world, the world government and his enemies gear 5 Luffy has the capability to destroy the world and that's so amazing.

I think Luffy has already started using other people's fruit powers, due to his very close relationship with ace he had due to his intense love grief respect and eventual catharsis with aces death he was able to preemptively gain access to joyboys complete unrestrained freedom ( is that what we've all agreed to refer to his power as? Freedom?) to do or make absolutely anything possible and manifested his redhawk and other fire based punch fighting abilities, it makes me wonder if others will break through due to loss or other great emotional upheaval, like if garp actually dies maybe we can see a galaxy impact, tho that's only a haki based ability so totally within his normal capabilities and also Koby is set up to be the true inheritor of Garps will but I just used that as a what if, maybe in the end luffy will use something or some part of everyone whose helped or inspired him along the way to defeat the ultimate last big bad of the series bringing some piece part or ability to life with imagination into reality for one last collosal kerwhallop to the face to finish off the ultimate evil of the series.

I think the reason why the Gomu Gomu no Giganto part looks a bit off is because they made Luffy's giant form fit the entire 1920x1080 screen, which meant they had to change the perspective slightly like you said, making his head and arms appear further from the screen. These last two episodes also make it come off somewhat like Luffy isn't in complete control of himself in this state. Kind of like when Chopper used to go berserk when he used monster point. From nearly taking a point-blank blast breath because he was laying on the ground laughing like a madman last episode to taking a lot of hits that he would have otherwise likely dodged in this one, it feels, to me at least, like he loses control of himself when he uses Gear 5.

Yeah it makes sense because it would later be revealed that most awakened Zoan users would lose themselves completely to their species (with of course the Demon Guards from Impel Down being the prime example of this). And there are only a few rare examples of those retaining themselves (Lucci and Kaku). Luffy in Gear 5 is pretty much a combo he's losing himself to the endless laughter and wackiness that is the Sun God Nika, but it's still clearly Luffy there as well.

I expected more from the Anime compared to the Manga about Gear 5 to be honest. 1071 was meh. 1072 was beautiful🤌 until Luffy's 60fps attempt animation before the attack on kaido. That's not what One Piece should look like imo (animation wise). Detail is more important and actually better/more enjoyable to watch rather than just fast flashy effects and lines. Also fast frames or really close up shots are literally just a "wtf moment". Like I'm trying to figure out which attacks are used in a fight... I don't care about a close up shot of kaido swinging his weapon😂 Don't get me wrong, Wano Arc definitely had some really good if not even the best animation we've had so far in OP but majority of it was just... not bad but questionable/weird. Hope Toei goes back to what they used to do... Now yo OP dick riders can enter the comment section👇🤓

The more they talk about it the more it sounds like Luffy can fight however he wants, or put another way, can control or change almost anything while he is fighting in that form. I think it's possible that Luffy could copy Kizaru. Especially if he makes things super bouncy and keep building momentum. Why couldn't he move at light speed in this universe?

My favorite thing about how the anime is portraying it is that they can make the power feel silly and kinda terrifying at the same time. In the Manga I wasn’t always sure how Oda wants me to feel about Gear 5. But especially the sound effects, music and voice performance help underline that Gear 5 is supposed to be obnoxious and intimidating at the same time.

I really love the goofiness of Gear 5 because it perfectly fits Luffy's goofy and silly character. He's always been a goofy goober from episode 1 and this form perfectly encapsulates Luffy's traits and shows them at their peak. For the people who want an edgy, serious Luffy form, Gear 4 Snake Man is right there. I loved ep 1071 and 1072, they were both exciting, hilarious and well-animated, but 1072 was definitely better. I haven't read the Gear 5 chapters in the manga so I didn't know that there was anime only content in ep 1072, but the anime only stuff is very good and imo shows how filler content should be done. The anime only content expanded upon what already was in the manga and added to the episode and was very entertaining. I've also seen some people complain about the animation in this ep which I don't get because the animation was very good, it wasn't God tier every second but does it really have to be?

The eyes popping effect is actually a bit weird much more due the frequency of it continues to happen....Probably it will become soon annoying. On the excess of aura effects used, a lot of people complained over the whole Wano arc and while I still prefer a more clean and aura-less effect, Toei seems to have been reduced the initial amount used...So it's an improvement, it's good enough to not complain too much about. For comparison the first clashes of Luffy-Kaido with Advanced Conqueror Haki are far more messy and unwatchable (for be one piece). In general there is a portion of viewers (probably the same grown with DBZ) that expect the power of an attack/character to be emphatized in that way, also in series where it should not.... it's a shame but probably it was a choice based on viewers's (percevied) preferences. The last part, the G5 fading and then re-kindling was truly truly cool and amazing... I loved that stylistic choice of how Luffy returned fully operative

Nah i been a fan of one piece for 15 years and while i think its cool in the manga, the anime version of this fight is just too wacky. Theres pretty much no tension and they both just feel invincible.

Nah I like how different it is, and the wackiness is perfect for Luffy's character. You can just feel the joy he is having in this fight, and that's the whole point. Joyboy is here! I think it was pretty spot on. One Peak!

Honestly the lack of organs, plural, leads me to believe Kaido has a squeedily spooch. This makes him an Irken, not a dragon. He is the tallest amongst the tallest

I'm not sure about that, seeing as Luffy got swallowed, so he was probably in the esophagus or the stomach. Luffy didn't puncture kaido while in there, so Kaido probably has organs. We just didn't see them

I don't think you understand Gear 5 and the "only limited by imagination" Luffy's Gear 5 is his awakening which means he can turn his surrounding to Rubber and manipulate that rubber however he wishes (not only his surroundings but also himself) with no limit. That means that whatever he can imagine himself doing is possible if Rubber/ Cartoon can become that. BUT, he can't mimic other devil fruit abilities that doesn't fall within what Rubber can become. I doubt that he can open his hand and shout "Room" and straight up use Law's abilities even if he imagined it. This is the same for the abilities of Buggy, Kidd, Big Mom... and most paramecias. I do however think that he can manipulate his body to look like a Dragon and somehow mimic Kaido's form if he imagined it. It is both infinite and constraint at the same time :)

Thank god someone mentioned this, anytime someone mentions that gear 5's power is imagination its cringe since its objectively not true, the enhanced feeling of freedom from gear 5 gives the user more means to want to be creative and its all within the confines of rubberizing the environment, other ppl and the users body itself. Luffy is a rubber morpher or transmuter. People really think luffy has toonforce lol

I thought 1071 was better than 1072. Felt that there wasn't a whole lot of stuff actually happening in this episode. Like Luffy would do some weird/stupid attack on Kiado that would do 0 damage and then Kiado would use some insanely powerful attack on Luffy which would also do 0 damage. On top of it all there would be moments of characters just staring...

I fully agree. 1071 didn't feel too great to me because of the constant shots of Luffy's back, close up mouth, the reused animations, weirdly placed and repetitive sound effects, and often hard to understand scenes. 1072 has none of that and executes it much better, and results in a much more enjoyable episode. I really had to warm up to 1071, and I didn't really fully enjoy it till I skipped repetitive/filler scenes on a rewatch... and unfortunately skipping over Hiyori's scene, because it was honestly poorly placed. The scene with Hiyori is too serious for the super goofy Gear 5 stuff that happened in that episode. I feel Hiyori's scene would have worked better if the gear 5 animation in 1071 was more similar to 1072.
