They will cost more than that way more. We have already put 2.5 bill and that number will go up to at least 8bil. The Tempest is not just a more advanced jet fighter it's a change of military doctrine the succession of drone tech and AI over man. But yeah the plan is to use these along side the f35 and strike drones, as command and control jets you should really not ever need more than 10 because there job is not to strike targets but support the drones that do. It will be used mostly with the new type 32 Frigate the worlds first drone based navy ship. UK AI and Radar tech is far advanced of even the USA, that's why this is possible. It's really the drones that will take over the Typhoons role, the Tempest will be there to offer control functionally should our satellite network be taken out.

HS2 costs 72bn. People seriously underestimate the money availble for these kinds of projects. We can afford it but it's about how can we justify the investment. The current UK stance is that we're outfitting the navy and RAF again and they'll want the latest tech if they are expected to become / maintain the leading european navy. Personally i'd rather see investment in civ R&D but UK is currently short on engineers and project managers in all civ industrys whereas the arms industry is ready to pick up the demand.

Involvement of the Netherlands? As a dutchman I must say I find that HIGHLY unlikely. We just upped our buy of F35's and all indications are that we will be flying that plane alone for the foreseeable future. There is zero discussion here of building a 6th gen design because unlike countries like the UK or Spain we don't have a 4/4.5 gen fleet left to replace after the introduction of the F35.
