@@cesaravegah3787 Yes , we are prohibited by federal legislation introduced by Labor back in the 1980s, from having any nuclear power or nuclear industry, that makes it impossible to have nuclear powered subs with conventional weapons. Whilst being one of the worlds biggest uranium suppliers. The really interesting thing about that is that the conservatives had government for ten years after that and never once did they repeal ANY Labor legislation. Soo we are in a situation where our sub requirements are those of a nuclear powered sub for its range and endurance , but we are FORCED to use conventional engines. The U.S offered us Virginia class leased and then built here, but the conservative government would NOT even try to repeal the legislation that would allow that. Very odd indeed.

But I believe competition is good especially at the concept stage. May the best design concept of the two be continued. We have reduced procurement from 140 odd to 48. This is for several reasons. Firstly the F-35 is laghably detectable by the typhoon IE we can launch at it before it ac launch at us, and it has the payload of an athsmatic gnat. If the Typhoon had been navalised (which is not that big a job) we would not bother with F-35 at all.

They will cost more than that way more. We have already put 2.5 bill and that number will go up to at least 8bil. The Tempest is not just a more advanced jet fighter it's a change of military doctrine the succession of drone tech and AI over man. But yeah the plan is to use these along side the f35 and strike drones, as command and control jets you should really not ever need more than 10 because there job is not to strike targets but support the drones that do. It will be used mostly with the new type 32 Frigate the worlds first drone based navy ship. UK AI and Radar tech is far advanced of even the USA, that's why this is possible. It's really the drones that will take over the Typhoons role, the Tempest will be there to offer control functionally should our satellite network be taken out.

HS2 costs 72bn. People seriously underestimate the money availble for these kinds of projects. We can afford it but it's about how can we justify the investment. The current UK stance is that we're outfitting the navy and RAF again and they'll want the latest tech if they are expected to become / maintain the leading european navy. Personally i'd rather see investment in civ R&D but UK is currently short on engineers and project managers in all civ industrys whereas the arms industry is ready to pick up the demand.

Drones can be hacked. The Iranians (probably with help from Russians) hacked one of the US stealth unmanned drones and landed it at one of their airfields.
