I live in SC and had friends who worked for the Republican Party in our county. I was at a hosted party while he was running for office again. In order to head off questions about not dating or having a wife, he said, 'maybe I'm like Strom Thurmond,' who got married in his waning years. He ignored me when I directly asked him a question twice, while standing with a circle of men. Then he wouldn't talk until I left. Nobody bothers to compete for office unless they are crazy or enter the race late but still get labeled a commie or something, by his constituency. I absolutely detest him and his hateful attitude.

Lindsey Graham was a lifelong Democrat up until one day he got a surprise offer from local Republicans. He came to me and asked if he should accept. It turns out the local Keowee Key Republicans told him they would back him financially if he would switch to the Republican party. Why did he come to me? I was a journalist for the Seneca daily paper, and I had known him for many years. I asked him if he would feel comfortable switching. He said it was the only way he could get a foothold in politics because Democrats didn't have any money to back him. The rest was history.
