“You HAVE to be willing to STOP on the chord tone” when going up/down the major scale, otherwise if you keep going it’s a run on sentence…. That simple thing hit home all of a sudden. Thank you GT, appreciate you and all you’re doing.

Hey Guthrie, just wanted to say thank you and share with you how much these short lesson nuggets mean to me. I am a 66 year old player since age 13; semi-pro, regular gig-er, consider myself an ok player…yet have felt stagnant over the past few years. For a while, watching your short lesson gems, I was thinking, “I’m never gonna’ get all this!” The past few days, however, I started noticing bits and pieces showing up in my playing, feeling really inspired by the tidbits I’ve learned and applied. I realized, I don’t have to absorb all of this at once, BUT, your tips are seeping into my vocabulary and I’ve a new excitement about pushing forward and bettering my music. Man, Guthrie, thank you very sincerely!😊 Blessings, Jimmy

Mike from Birmingham. Started playing at 12 now 51. Gigged my whole life doing mostly a "rock" thing. Thanks once again for a great lesson. I discovered your first video lessons during the pandemic and OD'd on them. I refuse to get bored or stale with guitar and your videos keep motivated and have expanded my knowledge and skill. Truly a life saver during work from home "social distancing" life. One day I'm coming up there for a few private lessons. I'll bring a good bottle of red!!

Dude, it finally clicked, this week I was playing a M1 m2 ska song bit…. Trying to find a solo… found all the shapes and starred playing the changes with the shapes under the scale noodling, I can see the targets…. Lots of mistakes but I’m not just wandering around the scale aimlessly hoping to land on something that sounds like it was done with purpose. Mind blown! Easy to over load the brain though, two chords is manageable, not sure how you track complicated changes, experience? Anyway, thank you for the keys to the kingdom, time to explore!

Guthrie! This was the one! I've been following you for a while, and have been doing some TruFire stuff. I learned the caged positions a few years ago and that helped me be able to chord up the neck but still struggled with melodies to connect chords or compliment them. I tried arpeggios and scales but it all felt so random. There was just a disconnect. I couldn't figure out what to do with them musically. Thought I would be a lifelong chorder. I can learn songs with melodic lines but never felt any freedom to improvise. Ive been playing since I was a teen. I'm 61 now and I can't begin to tell you how much fun I have had since this jewel of a video turned on that light bulb. I think it finally clicked! Thank you!!!!

Guthrie I found you several years ago when I was recovering from surgery. I watched listened and learned a lot from you. It took a while for the caged system to sink in to when I could visualize it on the fretboard. One of the biggest breakthroughs for me was triads. Once I saw them the chords around them magically appeared to me . Before that it was endless noodling trying to learn scales but never retaining the information. Found myself all over the place wrong notes, not staying in the key, just notes that didn’t really work over the chords. Thank so much and keep preaching the gospel of caged.

Guthrie, this is great quick lesson. There are a lot of folks teaching what to play on a chord(while your on a chord). However, search far and wide and there is not a lot of training how to phrase to connect one chord to the next closest different chord up or down the neck and I think this could be one of the most valuable lessons you could teachto help people play lead guitar. I have heard many say you play beautiful melodic phrases. I encourage you to put out some thorough lessons(maybe with Brett Papa) on how you think about and practice to CONNECT a chord to a different chord smoothly and what are your preferences on what chord tones you target on the chord your going to forward and backward. Not just the major key one - four - five but pick some other popular progressions like a 3-6 progression so we see what you think to target in the minor progression and how you connect those ideas. Maybe some minor songs that modulate to its relative major like Wayfaring Stranger. I believe a lesson like this would help a lot of people take off to play lead guitar. I believe YOU would inspire and help a lot of people with just as much impact as Pat Flynn’s homespun video had done for you years back.

Hey Guthrie, your mini lessons are awesome. Reminds me of a college class on chord melody I took back in the mid 70’s. That’s what they called it before the internet. Once I learned that it opened up the whole fretboard. Talk about a lightbulb moment. Before I worked that out, I would spend hours transcribing songs by ear. Once I got that chord melody/caged system under my belt everything made sense and could figure tunes out. Or visualize a song better. This is gold people. GT; Thanks for what you do.

This is so great. I have been working on CAGED and arpeggios for a couple of months, and am getting more familiar with it. I have been trying to work in the shapes of a 1,4,5 progression with it, but just doing the arpeggio shapes, or even the different scales is not as musical as this is, and I need to hear musical to keep me motivated practicing.
