The Makelele position. Sitting in front of the backs, your job is basically to try to stop your backs getting a kick, that won't work so you have to be very smart. You gauge and dismiss threats, those you find you stay close to without them noticing. You’re also the fastest guy on the pitch over 5 metres, you pounce! Ideally you can put your foot on the ball if necessary and do one touch stuff with the midfield. Running with the ball should be quite hard if you’re bossing the back. Claude could do that too. The Makelele position/role John McGovern used to do something similar for the mighty Nottingham Forrest, google it? Claude is the Man though.

Certainly Arsenal initially used him as a defensive pivot but after he showed his tendency to partake in offense, Arsenal used first Ray Parlour (and van Bronckhorst) to share the defensive duty in the midfield until they bought in Gilberto Silva to be their pure CDM as by 2002 Vieira already evolved to be a pure number 8. During that era Vieira was famous for his attack while Keane famous for his defense. But Vieira better than Kante? In offense sure. In defense? Not by a long shot.

Alfred Koomson you know what it is very difficult to say. Kante is a player that covers a lot of ground. Makelele certainly didn’t cover as much ground as Kante but he certain broke up play very well.

People want to say original Kante, Kante cannot hold the toilet paper Makelele used wipe his ass. Makelele can play as a lone CDM and box to box because he had good ball playing skills, great defensive positioning, fantastic reading of the game, and didn't need to use his legs to cover ground because he was always well positioned to disrupt play. The only thing Kante can do like Makelele is intercept the ball and a bit more endurance. Other than that, Kante cannot carry the ball, dribble, pass, nor start attacks like Makelele. Kante needs to play in a pivot and ball playing CM to partner him. The only player that comes close to Makelele is Fernandinho.

To get the best out of him, you need a ball playing CDM next to him so he can have the license to roam around the pitch and intercept the ball. Makelele can do basically everything Kante does, but he can operate between the back four and front line as a lone CDM because he was also a technically good footballer as well. Makelele can build up from the back under pressure, control the tempo of the game, dribble out of tight situations, and tackle like a CB. Kante can't do anything Makelele did except intercept and recover the ball. Makelele>Kante
