Only in England was it refered to as the Makelele role In Spain and Italy they played with these holding midfielders long before Makelele came to Chelsea. In England they were use to playing a standard 4-4-2 formation with two Centre midfielders who usually took turns in going forward and sitting.

Pero en otros sentidos (distribución de juego, conducción de balón, pase largo, etc.) los ha habido muchísimo mejores: Busquets, Redondo, Matthäus, Vieira, Luis Suárez (el del Inter)... Makelele era un especialista en la recuperación del balón, de los mejores que ha habido, una auténtica bestia parda, pero creo que considerarlo el mejor 5 de la Historia resulta un poco excesivo.
